Singapore President highlights India's Aspirational Districts programme at Philanthropy Asia Summit
SINGAPORE: Singapore President
Tharman Shanmugaratnam
has singled out India's "
Aspirational Districts Programme
" as an example of giving power to people in developing regions. Shanmugaratnam was addressing the
Philanthropy Asia Summit
(PAS) 2025 on Monday.
Themed 'Priming Asia for Good', the summit brings together thought leaders to spotlight solutions, innovations, and actions from across Asia to address global challenges in the interconnected areas of climate, education, and health.
The summit is being held from May 5 to 7.
Shanmugaratnam elaborated on the programme, saying "But innovation also involves organisation. For instance, if you look at India, one of the unsung successes is what they call the Aspirational Districts Programme.
A well-chosen name for the most underdeveloped districts in India."
He noted that it was Prime Minister Narendra Modi who launched the initiative in 2018 with the aim to quickly and effectively transform 112 most under-developed districts across the country.
"I believe
Gates Foundation
joined Piramal Foundation and Tata Trusts in helping to fund it," he added.
He observed in detail that the programme gives ownership to the community - developing community health workers, para-nurses, and data systems, supported from the centre - targeted especially at maternal health and health of the child in the earliest years.

Shanmugaratnam said he has visited some of those districts, and seen how they are working because they give ownership and agency on the ground to the people in the village themselves.
Shriti Pandey from Delhi, who was at the summit and has closely studied the programme for a year, agreed that the programme has empowered women in the villages.
Pandey said she has seen women in these districts who were definitely empowered and were involved in projects such as running the clinics and Anganwardis.
"A few baseline parameters are definitely getting better under the scheme, especially around health," said Pandey.
Pandey has spent time a year in one of the districts in Madhya Pradesh and worked with a few in Bihar.
"A lot of foundations and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) are adopting the scheme as a structure to fund projects," she told PTI on the sidelines of the summit. But there are a lot of infrastructural activities that still need to be done in terms of waste management, schools and education, said Pandey, who did a rural fellowship for a year and was a part of the programme in 2016-2017.
Part of the fellowship condition was to live in one of the villages in Madhya Pradesh for an entire year, while working for Aga Khan Trust, said Pandey, Founder and CEO of the Strawcture Eco for empowering sustainable construction.
Taking note of such programmes, and as part of ongoing efforts to support and scale solutions in climate, health and their intersection, Singapore's Temasek Trust and its ecosystem entities - the Philanthropy Asia Alliance (PAA), Centre for Impact Investing and Practices (CIIP) and Catalytic Capital for Climate and Health (C3H) - along with like-minded partners announced new global initiatives at the conference opening on Monday.
PAA launched two new Communities - the Health for Human Potential (HHP) Community, which aims to mobilise over US$100 million by 2030 to improve
maternal and child health
and address infectious diseases, and the Just Energy Transition (JET) Community, which supports Asia's shift toward clean, inclusive, and people-centered energy solutions.
CIIP and the World Economic Forum's Giving to Amplify Earth Action (GAEA) initiative, supported by PAA, highlights the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance in Asia, warning it could cost the region up to USD 700 billion by 2050 and surpass cancer as the leading cause of death.
The report calls for urgent, coordinated action and outlines four high-impact intervention areas to guide funders and partners in tackling this critical health challenge.
Co-Axis, a digital impact marketplace connecting funders with high-impact solutions aligned to the UN SDGs, has secured S$1.25 million in catalytic capital from the Richardson Family and Catalytic Capital for Climate and Health (C3H) to scale solutions in climate, health and their intersection, said the organizers in an official release.

Who is Scott Bessent? The banker who beat up richest man Elon Musk - here is what went down

The White House witnessed two rare phenomenon this year- an openly gay Republican taking charge of the US treasury department and that same person beating up the richest man Elon Musk . Moreover, the brawl between Scott Bessent and Musk eventually contributed to the latter's messy break-up with Donald Trump. The confrontation unfolded in the West Wing following a contentious Oval Office meeting, where both men lobbied Trump over who should lead the IRS. After the meeting, Bessent called Musk a 'total fraud,' accusing him of failing to deliver on promised spending cuts. In response, Musk allegedly delivered a forceful shoulder strike to Bessent's ribcage 'like a rugby player,' triggering a brief brawl that bystanders had to break up, as narrated by MAGA activist Steve Bannon. Trump, upon learning of the incident, reportedly said it was 'too much.' The scuffle ended with Musk being escorted out of the West Wing. Who is Scott Bessent? Scott Bessent is the first openly gay Treasury Secretary and the first openly LGBTQ Senate-confirmed Cabinet member in a Republican administration. A Yale graduate, he built a distinguished career in finance with roles at Brown Brothers Harriman, the Olayan Group, and Kynikos Associates before entering public service. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo He has been a long-time advocate, supporter and mentor of financial literacy and education programs. When Trump first considered him for the role, it sparked criticism from Elon Musk, the billionaire tapped to co-lead the newly established Department of Government Efficiency. 'Bessent is a business-as-usual choice,' Musk had said, adding, 'Business-as-usual is driving America bankrupt, so we need change one way or another.'

If AI codes all software and even takes away factory jobs, Zoho's Sridhar Vembu says humans will still have no shortage of work

As artificial intelligence continues to advance rapidly, concerns about job loss and human relevance in an automated future have grown louder. Addressing these fears head-on, Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu recently shared his views on how society might evolve if AI takes over most or even all kinds of work. AI May Take Over Code, But Not Purpose In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Vembu presented a hypothetical future where all software development is fully automated and software engineers, like himself, are out of work. However, he stressed that we are 'nowhere close to that goal' right now. Even if AI systems reach a point where they can independently manage all coding tasks, he argued, it doesn't mean human beings will become obsolete. Vembu argued that the core issue wouldn't be the disappearance of work but how the economic benefits of automation are shared. He said the problem would shift from technological capability to political economy—how income and access to goods are redistributed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why Cat Lovers Adore This Unique Lamp Graddi Read More Undo Two Possible Paths to a Fairer System According to Vembu, there are two key ways this dilemma could be resolved: Zero-Cost Goods: One scenario involves goods made by robots and AI becoming so cheap that their prices drop to zero, much like the air we breathe. In this world, essential services and products would be accessible to everyone without cost being a barrier. Higher Value for Human-Centric Jobs: The second possibility is that the remaining human roles — such as caring for children, nursing the sick, or restoring ecosystems — may gain higher economic value. These roles, Vembu said, could command greater purchasing power, especially if goods become ultra-affordable. He emphasized that these solutions require intervention, especially through anti-monopoly regulations. Without government efforts to break up tech monopolies, the cost savings from automation may not reach the general public. — svembu (@svembu) Public Reactions Reflect Hope, Concern, and Debate Vembu's comments sparked a wave of responses online. Some users agreed that AI might eventually replace most economic functions, while others warned of risks — including job loss, loss of skills, and monopolistic control of resources. One user pointed out that building and maintaining the robots themselves would still require engineers, energy, and infrastructure. Another suggested the need for an 'AI ombudsman' to oversee the direction AI development takes. Some questioned who would control these technologies, fearing they could become exclusive tools of the elite. The Future of Coding and Legacy Systems In a separate discussion, Vembu earlier questioned the continued relevance of older programming languages like C, JavaScript, and SQL. He argued that these tools, though widely used, might not suit the demands of the next century. Modern web development, he noted, is bogged down by the complexity of using multiple programming languages just to build simple interfaces. He suggested that AI could drive the transition away from these legacy systems by forcing the tech world to reimagine the fundamental principles of computing. Far from making engineers redundant, this shift may redefine their work, pushing them toward innovation rather than maintenance.
