2026 Bentley Bentayga Speed Marks a Return to Form

2026 Bentley Bentayga Speed Marks a Return to Form

Yahoo6 hours ago

In the U.S., there's no replacement for displacement. In Bentley's home of Crewe, England, there's no substitute for Speed—capital S in reference to the Speed trim, the flagship of any given Bentley model range. The Speed formula has been to start with a vehicle of already abundant power, handling, and hedonism, and enlarge the bounds of all three.
Until recently, Speeds were endowed with the best of the brand's W-12 engine. Then Bentley retired that engine with full honors. Its heir is a V-8. In the 2025 Continental GT Speed and the 2025 Flying Spur Speed, it's part of a 771-hp plug-in hybrid powertrain known as the Ultra Performance Hybrid.
Over in the SUV wing, Bentley retired the Bentayga Speed at the end of 2023. Filling in was the Bentayga S, a trim that wedded a tweaked Sport mode and an active anti-roll-bar system to the standard Bentayga's powertrain. The result: a modicum of improved handling in a vehicle that seemed more about a higher price point than increased athleticism.
The Bentayga Speed returns for 2026, ushering the S into retirement. And unlike the brand's hybrid coupe and sedan offerings, the Bentayga Speed remains a pure internal-combustion experience.
Up front is the same twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 shared with other Bentleys. Engineers increased airflow compared with the rest of the Bentaygas, achieving 641 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. That's 99 horses and 59 pound-feet over the retired Bentayga S and current lower Bentayga trims. It's 15 more horses and 37 less pound-feet compared with the previous Bentayga Speed, a familiar spec-sheet bracketing after an engine downsizing.
Benefits show up first in acceleration to 60 mph, which Bentley quotes at 3.4 seconds, 0.1 second quicker than the last Bentayga S we tested and 0.4 second quicker than Bentley's claim for the W-12 Speed. We reckon the new model can do the deed in closer to three seconds. Terminal velocity hits 187 mph, but that's with the standard brakes. Pay extra for massive carbon-ceramic units—17.3-inch rotors in the front, the largest ever on a Bentley, and 14.6-inch rotors in the back—and the top speed nudges up to a claimed 193 mph.
Four-wheel steering now comes standard, as does the Dynamic Ride active anti-roll-bar system. The Speed's Sport driving mode now stiffens the adaptive dampers by an additional 15 percent; the B (for Bentley) mode and the Comfort mode are unchanged.
The range of dynamic expression expands with two Bentayga firsts: an ESC Dynamic setting (a.k.a. drift mode) and launch control, both of which are paired with the optional carbon brakes. The laddish duo feels like novelty for novelty's sake.
Flipping to Sport mode automatically enables drifting even with the ESC still on; turn off the ESC, and you're allowed more slip angle.
For launch control, again you must flick the drive-mode dial to Sport, then press the ESC Off button, mash the brake, and floor the throttle. Software pins the revs just above 2000 rpm, where the Bentayga's full complement of torque becomes available. Let go of the brake, though, and launches don't deliver the expected hyperspace lunge. The ZF eight-speed automatic transmission executes its first shift just after 3000 rpm, well below the V-8's redline. The initial kick makes an impression, but the system isn't noticeably more exhilarating than just stomping on the throttle.
A new, optional 23-inch wheel debuts the largest rolling stock the Bentayga has ever known, an inch beyond standard. These wear 285/35R-23-sized tires, as opposed to the standard 22-inch, 285/40R-22 rubber.
Greater fury begs for greater sound. As on the Continental coupe and sedan, Akrapovič comes through with an optional new titanium exhaust wearing quad tips. Put the Bentayga in Sport, and a fresh boisterousness filters into the cabin, turning to anger when the throttle is worked hard in any drive mode.
The styling makeover is incremental, with identifying tidbits like Speed badging inside and out, dark-tinted exterior jewelry, and clear taillight lenses (which Bentley calls gray). For the first time the Bentayga has the option of a black roof. It's framed by black roof rails.
Drive this like the Bentley of SUVs, and it's grand. The cabin furnishings create a pleasure palace at any, well, speed. The steering is nicely weighted and pleasantly precise when tackling some flowing section of road. Beyond that, the efforts to sharpen the Bentayga's edge are akin to frayed stitching in Xanadu's appointments.
Bentley has done a fine job of damping the chatter from the 23-inch wheels, but a touch of kickback still thrums up through the seat bolster's hides. No matter the drive mode, the turbos needed a snap count of 1-2-3 to fully kick in—even in Sport, which holds a lower gear ostensibly to quicken turbo response. And the 15 percent stiffer Sport mode is probably 15 percent too stiff, with the suspension sacrificing the Bentayga's customary suppleness. Better to leave the drive mode in B, use the wheel-mounted paddle shifters for instant response, and enjoy this for the potent potentate's family carriage it is.
Because what a carriage inside. Handsome design meets stunning fit and finish. That fragrance of leather and wood? As we said of the Bentayga S and could say of every Bentley, "Smells like money." And victory. There's first-class detailing, like the organ stops for the vents being repeated for the cargo-cover restraint points. Carpet plush enough to encourage a "No shoes inside the Bentley" policy. The only thing we'd ask is for Bentley to put the front-seat controls on the door instead of in the crevice between the bolster and door. The cockpit's recliners and their pillowy headrests are dangerously comfortable, but reading braille at 70 mph to adjust a heap of comfort functions is not.
If you need a Bentayga Speed because you only buy at the top, your baroque horse has arrived. But you won't go wrong with a standard Bentayga either, and if a peer in his Speed wants to play "Last one to the club is a rotten earl," let him win. You're still in a Bentayga, and there's no replacement for refinement.

The 2026 Bentley Bentayga Speed Is a Leather-Lined Gravel Machine Gun: Review

The Bentley Bentayga arrived ten years ago, if you can believe it. While the Bentayga arguably pioneered the ultra-luxe 'Ute segment, many have followed, pushing the form ever faster and more expensive. Now Rolls, Lambo, and *gasp* Ferrari have six-figure SUVs of their own, while the 'value' options from the likes of Porsche and Land Rover continue to push the performance and luxury envelopes. What is the pioneering Bentley to do in an arms race of diamond-paneled leather and twin-turbo V-8s? Quick Specs 2026 Bentley Bentayga Speed Engine Twin-Turbocharged 4.0-Liter V-8 Output 641 Horsepower / 627 Pound-Feet 0-62 MPH 3.4 Seconds Base Price € 225,882 (EU), US Pricing TBD Go faster, apparently. For 2026, Bentley applied its 'Speed' formula to the Bentayga SUV. That means a spicier engine, a set of trim-specific, dope-ass 23s, and even an (optional) Acrapovič titanium exhaust. Does building an even-faster Bentleytruck make for a better Bentleytruck? We tested Bentley's theorem on the rural highways north of Yellowstone and on a fast-gravel and light-duty off-road course encircling a Montana ranch. Photo by: Kyle Kinard / Motor1 Engine, Drivetrain, Horsepower: More Is Better The Speed trim brings the heat. An uprated version of the company's twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 delivers 641 horsepower and 627 pound-feet. That's good for 3.4 seconds to 60 miles per hour (according to Bentley) and the kind of assured locomotive acceleration that isn't exactly neck-snapping but will rocket you past the next county line on the back of a swelling wave of torque. Here's my favorite high-performance non-sequitur: The Bentayga speed goes 193 mph flat out. There's a great engine under this plastic... thingy. We promise. Photo by: Kyle Kinard / Motor1 Pros: Wall Of Torque, Stunning Interior Quality, Snarling Exhaust From the driver's seat, these remarkable performance figures feel just about right. With launch mode engaged (another Bentayga first), there's far less suspension squat than you'd expect, even in the fractional seconds when the car leaves the line and its 285/35/ZR23 Pirelli PZeros claw for grip. You don't hear a peep from the tires, the Bentayga just GOES. The Bentley's V-8 pairs to a ZF 8-speed auto with a Torsen center differential and an e-locking rear diff to mete out power across the Bentayga's permanent all-wheel drive. The truck rides on self-leveling air suspension with electric roll bars and double wishbones at each corner. Photo by: Kyle Kinard / Motor1 Cons: 23-Inch Wheels Risk Flats, Bad Value, Staid Looks Technology, Interior, Infotainment: It's Gorgeous What else could I state besides the obvious? It's a Bentley in this cabin, through and through. That means best-in-class materials paired to a stately and well-thought-out interior. However you spec the Bentayga Speed, you'll be impressed. And I imagine half the joy for owners is figuring out whether to go with Aubergine leather on leather on leather, or with a delightful avocado-green to contrast the car's conservative exterior. (The answer is always green). The Bentayga's infotainment suite works flawlessly, as you'd expect from a car in this price range. I found the UI across the 10.9-inch central touchscreen to function just fine. Nothing stuck out. Nothing frustrated me. Wireless and wired Apple CarPlay performed flawlessly. This little screen for rear passengers is neat. That is all. Photo by: Kyle Kinard / Motor1 This is just a sublime, easygoing place to spend time. If the exterior looks a bit more conservative, the Bentayga's interior really lets you know where that MSRP went. Of note, the NAIM speaker upgrade was bangin'. Because there's so little cell service in Montana canyons, the Bentley team preloaded a wired phone with epic soundtracks from modern westerns like 'Yellowstone' and cinema classics in the making like 'Interstellar.' With 1,780 watts, 17 channels, and 20 speakers total, the NAIM system and Hans Zimmer's strings made for an absolutely epic road trip. Photo by: Kyle Kinard / Motor1 Design: Grand But Not Grandiose The Bentayga isn't exactly marmite. Quite the opposite. I find the SUV stately enough but staid, capturing less of Bentley's typical grandeur than its stretched-out, broad-shouldered Continental and Flying Spur siblings. Something didn't quite translate when they raised Bentley's corporate design up on stilts with the early Bentaygas, and that trend continues here, even on the fastest and fastest-looking Bentley ute yet. This is a handsome and athletic-ish looking SUV, ultimately inoffensive, but not breathtaking. Whether you're after that low-key attitude when Lamborghini offers a competitor which looks like a Gundam humping a Huracan—Well that's a matter of personal taste. Photo by: Kyle Kinard / Motor1 That said, the Bentayga Speed's optional 23-inch wheels look the absolute business. We heard rumors about several flat tires delaying an earlier wave of drivers on public roads, but I witnessed just one (double) flat on the drive, and it occurred at speed on a closed-off-road course following an impact with a large rock. Draw your own conclusions, but I think an impact like that would rip the tire off any of Bentayga's competition, too. Beyond those wheels, which are exclusive to the Speed trim, there are a few bespoke exterior styling accents, but few worth mentioning. This mostly looks like a Bentayga rolling on dubs (plus another three inches). Please get your Bentayga Speed dirtier than this. Photo by: Kyle Kinard / Motor1 Driving Impressions: EEEHAWWWW As the Bentayga Speed sailed along a rolling dirt road in Montana country, I reflected on the early mornings waaaaay way back when I'd rally a '93 4Runner to work at the farm in Johnson, Washington. The biggest difference between memory and reality wasn't the price gap between an old Toyota and a new Bentley. It was the sound: You'll never drive a quieter vehicle at highway speeds down a gravel road. The Bentayga was peerless. Not a single rock audibly dinged off a wheel well or glanced off the side of the SUV's body with a ping. I've driven thousands of miles down dirt and gravel roads (including in press loaners) and never in something this quiet, composed, or ultimately civilized. Photo by: Kyle Kinard / Motor1 In that respect, this is some ultimate version of the SUV. In addition to the quiet, there's also growl. An optional titanium Acrapovič exhaust offers a sublime V-8 soundtrack for when you're gettin' it on a rural backroad. While other über-SUVmakers are content to move to V-6 powerplants, truly nothing sounds like an uncorked V-8, and Bentley lets this one sing. Amen. The color "green": good outside, and inside a Bentley. Photo by: Kyle Kinard / Motor1 Fuel Economy: About As Expected Bentley didn't provide efficiency figures as the Speed is 'Pending Type Approval' on the WLTP cycle in Europe, but the trip computer displayed 15.4 mpg during my day of driving generally like a civilized Soccer Dad through the little towns that punctuate the roads leading into Yellowstone, then driving like a lead-foot degenerate in the wide spaces between. We call that 'mixed' driving. Photo by: Kyle Kinard / Motor1 Pricing & Verdict: For Our Money, Less Is More The Speed rings in at €225,882 for the base MSRP. US pricing is TBD, as Bentley is in a holding pattern with imports at the moment . Expect more information in July 2025, when the tariff situation becomes clearer. On our 'Snow Quartz Pearlescent' test car, the paint rang in at €13,555, while the black painted wheels cost €10,370. The Acrapovič titanium exhaust will set you back €7,740 while the Naim audio system rings in at €7,355. These are not cheap options, but the options are innumerable, so if there's something you want on this Bentley, be assured. It's available. For a price. Just pay up for these damned speakers. NAIM rocks. Photo by: Kyle Kinard / Motor1 Overall, you can't fault the Bentley Speed with any real veracity. By upping its dynamic game and even creating a trim-specific traction-control setting so the Speed can step sideways on gravel roads, Bentley has built an SUV with a staggering breadth of ability and no shortage of amenities. For my money, I'd skip the Speed trim and spec the green leather and the good sound system. The slower Bentaygas are fast enough, equally luxurious, and generally a bit cheaper. If you need or want the extra performance only the Speed trim offers, then here's your answer. Just promise you'll drive it hard on dirt. 2026 Bentley Bentayga Speed First Drive: No W-12? No Problem.

The 12-cylinder era might be burning out, but the thrill ride is far from over. Leave it to Bentley to keep the adrenaline pumping. Ever since the marque waved goodbye to its thunderous W-12, it's been on a mission to reclaim that lost horsepower glory—and then some. A few Bentleys have turned to plug-in hybrid V-8s, blending volts and velocity for a new-age punch. But the 2026 Bentley Bentayga Speed takes a different route, and it's one lined with nothing but pure, unfiltered gasoline. This beast of an SUV cranks out even more horsepower than the dearly departed W-12, all without a hint of electrification. The 2026 Bentley Bentayga Speed swaps its W-12 for a 641-hp V-8, delivering more power and a muscle-car-like roar. It features enhanced steering, suspension, and interior luxury. Priced around $260,000-$300,000, it debuts in late 2025 with limited initial availability. This summary was generated by AI using content from this MotorTrend article Read Next The 2026 Bentley Bentayga Speed doesn't just wring every last pony out of its V-8; it turns up the volume, too. Bentley strapped on a new exhaust system that doesn't whisper refinement and instead roars with muscle car attitude. Fire it up, and you're treated to a soundtrack that growls, snarls, and crackles like it just rolled off a dragstrip. It's a symphony of combustion that dials up the drama and injects even more excitement into every accelerator stomp. To put the revamped V-8 to the test, we hit the scenic roads of Montana, where the landscapes are as wide open as the throttle. The mission was to see if this new setup has what it takes to fill the retired W-12's mighty shoes. Of course, we couldn't resist pushing the limits a little. So yes, we tried to get the Bentayga sideways, because come on, who doesn't love sliding a nearly three-ton luxury SUV just for the thrill of it? 641 HP on Tap Bentley didn't revive the Bentayga Speed just for show. The company did so because customers demanded more muscle. The result is an upgraded 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8, which now pumps out a ferocious 641 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. That's 15 horses more than before and just 37 lb-ft shy of the mighty W-12 it replaced. In real-world driving, you won't notice the torque drop, but you definitely feel the punch every time you mash the gas. Fire up the engine, and you might fool the neighborhood into thinking a Corvette just rolled onto the block. The Bentayga's roar is deep, thunderous, and guaranteed to plaster a smile across your face. Bentley certainly wasn't exaggerating when it said the Sport exhaust system would crank things up. Our test model, finished in stealthy Gravity Grey, indeed came fitted with the Akrapovič exhaust setup, complete with quad tailpipes that enhance the sound even further. Honestly, we didn't expect it to sound this good. Not because we doubted Bentley's capabilities but because pairing a Bentayga's posh presence with a muscle car snarl feels totally unexpected, yet it's completely awesome. Put the Bentayga Speed in drive, tap Sport mode, and buckle up. Hold the brake pedal while pressing the throttle, then release it. There's a slight pause before the chaos begins. The V-8 erupts, the exhaust howls through the cabin, and the revs shoot skyward. You're pinned back into the seats, grinning like a maniac, as the eight-speed transmission snaps through gears with precision. It's raucous, it's wild, and it's laugh-out-loud exhilarating—the kind of experience that makes you want to turn around and do it all over again. Feeling Good, Too Sure, some brief turbo lag puts a slight damper on the party, and we wish it weren't there at all. But once the new Bentayga Speed shakes it off, it launches with serious intent, hitting 60 mph in just about three seconds, Bentley says. Not bad for a luxury SUV tipping the scales at nearly 2.5 tons. Yet it never feels that heavy. A big part of this magic comes from the steering. Light and effortless around town, it tightens up noticeably in Sport mode, giving you just enough feedback to forget you're piloting a high-riding SUV. Bentley deserves serious credit here because the steering is precise, responsive, and confidence-inspiring, whether you're gliding down a highway or carving through switchbacks. Bentley says the suspension stiffens by 15 percent in Sport mode, and after some seat time, we're inclined to accept that. Just like the transmission and steering, the dampers get noticeably firmer, dialing in a more planted and responsive feel when you push the pace. But when you flick the dial to Comfort mode, the Bentayga transforms; suddenly it's all about plush cruising, soaking up bumps like a proper grand tourer. Want something in between? Bentley mode strikes the perfect balance, delivering a luxuriously soft ride that effortlessly glides over cracked pavement and even loose gravel. Yes, we ventured off the beaten path—unpaved roads and all—and watched the suspension work its magic. The dampers and air suspension worked in harmony, ironing out rough terrain so effectively that you kind of think the road has been suddenly paved. Drifting a Bentley might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you see one roll up, but the Speed version has a few tricks up its sleeve, namely torque vectoring and a dynamic stability control system that let you kick out the rear, just enough to feel like a rally hero. Now, we tried to drift it—conditions weren't exactly ideal, and we only had two corners to play with—but the Bentayga still managed to swing its tail with a touch of oversteer. With limited runoff and loose terrain, it was a brief but fun moment of controlled chaos. We'll need more seat time (and space) to perfect the art, but once it hits the streets later this year, you can bet we'll be giving it another shot on our home turf. The 2026 Bentley Bentayga Speed doesn't just feel special from behind the wheel, as it treats everyone lucky enough to ride inside. As with any Bentley, the interior is a master class in luxury, where every surface feels thoughtfully crafted and unmistakably high-end. The leather seats strike the balance between supple comfort and sporty support, with side bolsters that hold you snug when the road starts to wind. Look up, and the Alcantara headliner adds a whisper of sophistication. And as always with Bentley, personalization reigns supreme. Whether it's contrast stitching that injects a splash of personality into the cabin or the stealthy elegance of dark chrome trim, there are endless ways to make the space uniquely yours. New diamond-quilted stitching on the seats and door panels brings a sporty and sumptuous vibe. And just in case you forget what you're driving, Speed emblems are scattered proudly throughout the cabin, from the passenger-side dash to the seat backs. Bentley offers the Bentayga Speed exclusively in short-wheelbase configuration, a nod to its sportier intentions. But that choice comes with a slight trade-off. Rear legroom isn't exactly generous, especially if you're expecting limolike stretches of space. It's comfortable enough for shorter trips, but let's be real: This isn't the Bentayga you buy to be chauffeured in. It's the one you buy to drive . Still, Bentley didn't forget about the back seat. Tucked into the rear of the center console is a slick, smartphone-style control unit that lets rear passengers tweak everything from the radio and climate settings to the window blinds. On Sale and Cost Bentley remains tight-lipped about pricing. For now, the marque has committed to holding existing prices steady through July, but don't expect a fresh wave of inventory anytime soon. The company is only offering customers existing stock while it awaits clarity on looming tariff changes, particularly the 10 percent tariff on British-built vehicles. Once the regulatory dust settles, Bentley will unveil official pricing for the 2026 Bentayga Speed. That said, we figure the price tag will stay just shy of the $300,000 mark. As for availability, Bentley anticipates the first 2026 Bentayga Speeds will begin arriving in the fourth quarter of this year, just in time to add some serious horsepower to your holiday season.
