'He had everything' - Joe Cole questions Chelsea letting England U21 star leave

Metro2 days ago
Joe Cole has questioned Chelsea's decision to allow Tino Livramento to leave – and claims the full-back would get into Enzo Maresca's current starting XI.
A breakdown in contract talks saw Livramento depart Chelsea's academy for Southampton in 2021, with the Saints seeing off strong competition from Brighton, AC Milan and RB Leipzig to sign the defender.
Livramento quickly established himself as a first-team regular at St Mary's and his outstanding performances caught the attention of Newcastle, who captured the 22-year-old for a fee of £32million – plus £8m in add-ons – two years ago.
In that time, Livramento has gone from strength under the tutelage of Eddie Howe and the youngster played a key role last season as the Magpies finally ended their 70-year wait for a major trophy by lifting the Carabao Cup.
To cap off a memorable few months, Livramento added another piece of silverware to his collection on Saturday as the England Under-21 side successfully defended their European Championship title with a 3-2 victory over Germany in Bratislava.

The right-back – who has been capped once at senior level – was subsequently named in UEFA's Team of the Tournament, along with five of his fellow countrymen in James Beadle, Charlie Cresswell, Elliot Anderson, James McAtee and Harvey Elliott.
'I watched him throughout the tournament and I coached him a few times at Chelsea. He was coming through when I was there,' ex-Chelsea and England winger Cole said of Livramento on The Dressing Room Podcast.
'He's a lovely lad, great ability. I remember doing a session with him on crossing and I was just trying to break down the three different crosses you would do.
'He had everything: big, powerful, great skill, great attitude.
'I was like, 'Once you get to the byline you've only got three options: you've got the dink to far post, you whip it across or you cut it back', and he did it on both sides, left and right.'
Cole is unsure whether the new recruits Chelsea have brought in recent years have been an upgrade on 'top players' like Livramento and Lewis Hall, who left Stamford Bridge for Newcastle last year.
He added: 'When we talk about the new model at Chelsea and we praise them… you've still lost Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall, another top player.
'I don't know how much money but they've gone out. Are the ones coming in [better]?
'Tino Livramento would get in Chelsea's team now I think.'
According to Cole, Livramento would have had a strong case for the Player of the Tournament award had it not been for Elliott's heroics across England's triumphant campaign.
'He [Livramento] was absolutely brilliant,' he continued.
'If it wasn't for Harvey Elliott getting Player of the Tournament, he could have been in the running for it.'
Cole's namesake, Ashley Cole, who was on Lee Carsley's coaching staff at the U21 European Championship, has been similarly impressed and tipped Livramento for a 'beautiful future' last month.
'He was in the U21s, in the reserve group at Chelsea. You always see the passion and level he could get to,' the legendary ex-Chelsea, Arsenal and England left-back said.
'I think him getting the opportunity at Newcastle and continuing to play first-team football gave him the belief, the confidence in his own ability.
'And of course, a manager that's trusted him to play at such a young age. I think he had quite a big challenge going to Newcastle, but he's developing into a top player.
'I think he's got a beautiful future, a bright future. Long may it continue that he keeps playing for Newcastle, keeps gaining experience and keeps his levels up.'

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Maresca said: 'It's a very sad day. I struggle to find words because it's very difficult, the feeling that you have is of helplessness in this kind of situation. 'The only thing I can say is all my love to his family, the people in this moment. It's a big tragedy for them. Advertisement 'In terms of Pedro it is very sad, probably more than sad. 'It's completely Pedro's decision. I had a chat with Pedro and we support him. Any decision he will take is the correct one. 'It doesn't matter if he'll be on the pitch or not. We'll see how he is feeling but, in any case, we're going to support him.' 'We prepare for the game against Palmeiras, not against Estevao. In this moment he is a Palmeiras player. 'We don't care if in the future he will be with us when this competition is finished. Maresca said: 'Joao's situation is a bit strange or different because he was on holiday. Even if he was working it is not the same when you work for yourself, compared with when you work with the team. 'But we are very happy with Joao. In the last two days he worked with us. We'll see if we need him and if we have a chance to give him some minutes we're going to give him some minutes.' Advertisement

Henderson wipes away tear as ex-Liverpool skipper pays Jota tribute at Anfield

Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has returned to Liverpool to pay an emotional tribute to his ex-teammate Diogo Jota after his tragic death in a car crash in Spain Jordan Henderson wiped away tears as he returned to Anfield with a tribute for former Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota. The Portuguese forward died in a devastating car crash in Spain on Thursday night alongside his brother Andre Silva. The footballing world has been struck by grief since the news was confirmed, with kind messages being sent from all corners of the globe. Ex-Liverpool skipper Henderson - currently playing for Dutch side Ajax - decided to return to Merseyside to pay his respects. ‌ The midfielder laid a scarf and flowers within a growing memorial to Jota outside of Anfield. He was also spotted wiping away a tear as he attempted to come to terms with the heartbreaking loss of his former teammate. ‌ Henderson's gesture comes just a day after he had written a touching tribute on social media. He said: "I really can't believe what has happened today and all I can think about is Diogo and Andre's family. It's unimaginable the pain you all must be suffering. All of our prayers, love and support are with you now and forever. "Jots it was a pleasure to share a pitch with you but more importantly a friendship. All the laughs we had off the pitch and trying to find ways to wind milly up and get him fined, which we never could. "Taking pictures of me asleep on the bus travelling then sending them to me later. You always wanted to have a laugh and were a pleasure to be around. I know how much Rute and your family meant to you and I know you will always be looking down on them. "Thank you for everything you brought into this world, we will all miss you. Rest in peace along with your brother Andre. Love ya mate. YNWA." Henderson has joined many of his ex-teammates in paying tribute to Jota and his brother. Current captain Virgil van Dijk also penned some words, while making a vow to Jota's family. ‌ He said: "Man, I can't believe it, I don't wanna believe it. Absolutely devastated and in total disbelief. What a human being, what a player, but most importantly what an unbelievable family man. ‌ "You meant so much to all of us and you always will! For your family to lose two sons, a husband and a father is just unimaginable. So cruel and unfair. "My heart is breaking for all of your beautiful family, for Rute and for your kids. I promise you that in these difficult times and beyond we will always be there for your family. ‌ "A champion forever, number 20 forever. It's been a privilege to have stood by your side on the pitch, and to have been your friend off it. We will miss you beyond words and never forget you. Your legacy will live on, we will make sure of it! Rest in perfect peace Diogo & André." Liverpool have already delayed their return for pre-season following the news of Jota's passing. They were originally set to return this Friday for initial testing but that has now been pushed back to Monday at the earliest.

Chelsea's transfer policy raises eyebrows again with 48th arrival in three years

Chelsea have been relentless in the transfer market and already seen the signings of Liam Delap and Joao Pedro this summer with Jamie Gittens also set to join from Borussia Dortmund Andrey Santos made his Chelsea debut at the Club World Cup, making a 22-minute substitute's appearance against Esperance Tunis in the group stages of the tournament. His debut came two and a half years after signing for the club from Vasco da Gama in a £13million deal. Since then, he has been on loan at Vasco da Gama and on loan at Nottingham Forest and on loan at Strasbourg. But his testimony was, apparently, one of the reasons Joao Pedro decided a move from Brighton, where he was one of the team's key players, to Chelsea was a good idea. ‌ 'I was talking with Andrey. I asked about the club," said the new £55m arrival at Stamford Bridge. "He said good things about the team so it is good to join.' ‌ Remember, since arriving in January of 2023, Santos has played once for the club. Just when you think Chelsea's transfer policy could not get any more startling, along comes another eyebrow-raising signing. For a start, it is the numbers that stagger. I make it 48 signings - including loan recruits - in three years. Denis Zakaria, Gabriel Slonin, Joao Felix, David Fofana, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Andrey Santos, Cesare Casadei, Carney Chukwuemeka, Malo Gusto, Noni Madueke, Benoit Badisashile, Kalidou Koulibaly, Raheem Sterling, Marc Cucurella, Mykhaylo Mudryk, Wesley Fofana, Enzo Fernandez, Diego Moreira, Angelo, Deivid Washington, Djorde Petrovic, Robert Sanchez, Lesley Ugochukwu, Nicolas Jackson, Axel Disasi, Cole Palmer, Christopher Nkunku, Romeo Lavia, Moises Caicedo, Tosin Adarabioyo, Jadon Sancho, Marc Guiu, Caleb Wiley, Renato Veiga, Mathis Amougou, Aaron Anselmo, Mike Penders, Omari Kellyman, Filip Jorgensen, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Joao Felix (again), Pedro Neto, Kendry Paez, Mamadou Sarr, Dario Essugo, Estevao, Liam Delap, Joao Pedro. If I've missed anyone out, forgive me. And if you are familiar with the fortunes of each and every one of these players, you are the ultimate footballing anorak or devoted Chelsea fan. The policy is hard to understand on a few levels. There have, of course, been plenty of outgoings as a balance to the buys and shrewd financial manoeuvring has obviously kept Chelsea within the legal parameters of the Profit and Sustainability Rules. ‌ Selling the women's team to a subsidiary of the club's parent company for £200m clearly helps. But supporters of other clubs struggling to stay within the bounds of financial regulations must still be a touch mystified. And then there is the astonishing churn. It is hard to believe the manager, Enzo Maresca, can keep track, bearing in mind he needs to be across the development of all of the outstanding players at the club's academy. The pathway for those players is a tough one. If they are good enough, they will still make it but it is a daunting task. ‌ It has always been fundamentally linked to a club's success, obviously, but the transfer market has never been so crucial - and complex. And Chelsea are certainly not the only ones to be very active in the relatively early stages of this window. For money spent, Liverpool have matched them, for example, and, in 2025, Manchester City have signed eight players for a total of almost £300m. But Liverpool only signed one player in last year's summer transfer window. ‌ Maresca would, no doubt, suggest recent activity is all part of his reshaping of the squad and the upcoming season - rather than the current Club World Cup campaign - will be a reflection of how effective that has been. Perhaps Chelsea will be a major force in the Premier League and the Champions League. Maybe then, recruitment will not be so intense. But does a club's transfer policy - and Chelsea are stockpiling an inordinate amount of young players - really matter, as long as there is achievement on the pitch? The answer is yes. To the outsider, Chelsea always had an identity. It stood for a bit of swagger, we always knew the core of a team that played with style. It was a cool club. It still is. But its trade is now not only football but buying and selling. Players became icons. Now they just seem to be commodities.
