V.K. Santhosh Kumar elected CPI Kottayam district secretary
Hailing from a communist family in Poonjar, Mr. Kumar began his organisational work in 1978 as the All India Students Federation (AISF) unit secretary. He also served as assistant secretary of the Meenachil taluk committee of the party. He had been secretary of the CPI Poonjar constituency committee for 14 years, followed by a decade as the party's district assistant secretary. Currently, he is a member of the party's State council.
Mr. Kumar is a member of the All India Youth Federation (AIYF) national council and holds leadership roles in several trade unions, including as president of the Meenachil Taluk Toddy Tapping Workers' Union, as president of the Meenachil Liquor Industry Workers' Union and as district president of the Supplyco Employees' Union. He also serves as a State office-bearer of the Liquor Industry Workers Federation and is a member of the State Minimum Wage Board advisory committee.
Criticism
Earlier, the delegates attending the district conference had raised criticisms directed at Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Ministers of the State government. Critics pointed out that the government had lost its Leftist character, with all four CPI-led departments underperforming. Further condemnation was directed at the Finance department for withholding funds, thereby stifling the CPI-led departments. The CPI State leadership, meanwhile, was described as weak and unable to take a firm stand on key issues.
Representatives of the AIYF attending the conference also voiced strong criticism of the leadership, condemning the absence of youth representation even in the conference presidium and criticising the leadership's disregard for young members. They accused the party district secretary of not attending AIYF meetings and alleged attempts to suppress the youth outfit under the party's control.

UDF suffers a blow in Vaikom as Kerala Congress councillor joins CPI(M)
With just a few months to go for the local body elections in Kerala, the United Democratic Front (UDF) has suffered a major setback in Kottayam with a Kerala Congress councillor in the Vaikom municipality switching allegiance to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)]. This move has left both the UDF and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) with an equal number of members in the municipal council. Sindhu Sajeevan, who represents Ward 13 and serves as chairperson of the municipality's development standing committee, joined the CPI(M) at a reception held at the Vaikom Boat Jetty on Wednesday evening. CPI(M) Kottayam district secretary T.R. Raghunathan handed over the party flag to Ms. Sajeevan, welcoming her into the party. Spat over graft charges Ms. Sajeevan decided to leave the Kerala Congress and the UDF following a public spat with municipal vice-chairman P.T. Subash over alleged corruption charges raised against her. While the allegations had initially been brought up by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Ms. Sajeevan maintained that she had received no support from the ruling council. Upon exiting the UDF, she alleged corruption running into crores of rupees in municipal projects, including grass cutting along the backwaters, mini MCDF, bed distribution, and construction of public toilets. UDF dismisses claims The UDF leadership, however, dismissed these claims. Municipal chairperson Preetha Rajesh stated that the civic body had spent only ₹25 lakh in total on the four projects cited by Ms. Sajeevan. In the 26-member municipal council, the UDF and the LDF now have 10 members each, while the BJP has four. The remaining two seats are held by a Congress Independent and a CPI(M) Independent respectively.

CPI(M) cracks down on members who publicly criticised Health Minister
Over a month after two Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] members in Pathanamthitta publicly criticised Health Minister Veena George in the wake of the collapse of a building at the Government Medical College Hospital in Kottayam, the party has initiated disciplinary action against them. Party sources said here on Thursday that the Eraviperoor area committee has recommended to the district committee that former Child Welfare Committee (CWC) chairman N. Rajeev be demoted to the Vallamkulam local committee for his remarks about the Minister. P.J. Johnson, a member of the Elanthoor local committee, has been suspended for three months. The action against Mr. Johnson has been initiated soon after his social media post criticising Ms. George. In the case of Mr. Rajeev, the district committee is expected to make a decision soon, a party source said. Mr. Rajeev had earlier been removed from the District CWC chairman post in connection with an alleged attempt to sabotage a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) case involving a lawyer. Following this, he reportedly fell out of favour with the Minister, a party leader from Pathanamthitta. Mr. Johnson voiced his objections on social media regarding Ms. George's handling of the building collapse, writing: 'Let alone a Minister, Veena George does not even deserve to be an MLA. Nothing more to say… don't compel me to say more…' Factionalism The CPI(M) in Pathanamthitta has been fraught with factionalist tendencies with a section of the cadre voicing their resentment over various issues, including the alleged 'undue prominence' being accorded to Ms. George in the party. Following the recent reconstitution of the party State committee, veteran leader A. Padmakumar had publicly criticised the party leadership for excluding him from the committee while including Ms. George as an invitee. After intervention from senior leaders, Mr. Padmakumar softened his stance, acknowledging that taking his protest public had been a mistake. 'Not quit, but on leave' Meanwhile, CPI(M) Pathanamthitta district secretary Raju Abraham has dismissed reports claiming that the party's Ranni area committee secretary T.N. Sivankutty had resigned, clarifying that he is on leave for health reasons. 'Mr. Sivankutty had submitted a letter to the party's district committee requesting leave due to health issues. Based on this, the Ranni area committee meeting held on Wednesday assigned the temporary charge of secretary to K.P. Subhash Kumar. He will hold this responsibility until Mr. Sivankutty returns,' Mr. Abraham said.

Punjab cabinet approves de-notification of controversial land pooling policy
CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Cabinet on Wednesday approved the de-notification of the controversial land pooling policy, which the AAP-led state government had recently withdrawn amidst protests from farmers, opposition parties and growing internal dissent. The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Following the government's withdrawal of the policy, farmers' unions and opposition parties had been pressing the state to issue a formal notification for its rollback. Under mounting pressure from these groups, the government on Monday (August 11) announced that it was withdrawing the policy, which it had earlier described as 'farmer-friendly.' Opposition parties and farmers' unions, who had described the policy as a land 'grabbing' scheme, called its rollback a victory for the people of Punjab, claiming they had 'forced' the Mann government to reverse its decision. Last week, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had stayed the policy, criticising the government for introducing it without conducting any environmental or social impact assessment. As per the policy, the state government had planned to acquire 65,533 acres of land across 21 cities and towns in Punjab to develop industrial and residential zones, a move said to be the largest acquisition of land by the state government since 1966. Under the policy, an owner would be given a 1,000 square yard residential plot and a 200 square yard commercial plot in fully developed land in lieu of one acre of land.
