CET Day-1: Over 6.70 lakh candidates appear in exam amid tight security
Extensive arrangements were made across 22 districts of Haryana and in Chandigarh for the conduct of the CET examination, said officials.
The Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC) was conducting the CET exam for the 'Group-C' posts recruitment on Saturday. The exam will also be held on Sunday.
An official spokesperson informed that admit cards were issued to more than 13.48 lakh candidates for the CET scheduled on July 26 and 27.
The examination was to be conducted in four shifts over two days. On Saturday, the exam was held in two shifts — in the first shift at 1,338 centres for 3,37,790 candidates, and in the second shift at 1,336 centres for 3,37,261 candidates. Thus, the CET examination was conducted peacefully at 2,674 centres on the first day, the spokesperson said.
Deputy Commissioners, Superintendents of Police, and other senior administrative officers personally inspected exam centres, bus stands, and other important locations. Special bus services were arranged by the transport department to facilitate candidates in reaching their examination centres, which ensured smooth arrangements and satisfaction among candidates. CCTV surveillance, flying squads, duty magistrates, and nodal officers were deployed at all examination centres to ensure that the entire process was completely transparent, fair, and peaceful, shared the spokesperson.
Transport Minister Anil Vij said, 'It was the commitment of our government that every candidate must reach the examination center, and this responsibility was fulfilled diligently by the transport department. Today was particularly a difficult day. Around 11 lakh candidates had to appear for the exam, and about 13 lakh people were traveling by buses, also due to the Teej festival and the weekend, there was additional rush in the buses. However, the entire staff of the Transport Department had been working on the arrangements since last night'.
Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC) chairman Himmat Singh who conducted tour of various examination centres in Nuh and other places, said, 'CET exam is being conducted with complete transparency and fairness to provide better employment opportunities to deserving candidates. CET exam is being conducted in Nuh for the first time, and the district administration has made all necessary arrangements to ensure its smooth conduct. Facilities such as transport, accommodation, and meals have been arranged for candidates. Shuttle bus services have also been provided in all districts to transport candidates from bus stands to exam centers.'

Senior BJP leader Rahul Sinha called the grant a misuse of public funds. 'This is a burden on taxpayers as the money is coming from the government exchequer. Why doesn't Mamata Banerjee give the grant from the Trinamool fund or from her own pocket?' he said, accusing the Chief Minister of attempting to woo Hindu voters ahead of elections by funding Durga Puja and planning the construction of a Jagannath temple in addition to the grant hike, Banerjee instructed the state administration to enhance infrastructure and public services during the Puja period. 'Public announcement systems should be placed inside and outside pandals. The Transport Department must increase the frequency of buses and I will ask Metro authorities to run services continuously. Soon, Haryana's Saini govt to recruit for 24,800 junior-level posts
After recruiting nearly 24,000 youths for government jobs during the oath ceremony in October 2024, the Nayab Singh Saini-led government is now set to offer an additional 24,800 junior-level posts in the coming months. To shortlist candidates for Group-C positions, one round of the Common Eligibility Test (CET) has already been conducted, while preparations are underway for the next exam. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini's media secretary Praveen Attrey told The Indian Express on Thursday that 'as many as 24,800 posts for Group C and Group D would be filled after another round of Common Eligibility Test (CET)'. The CET, organised by the Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC), serves as a preliminary written examination to screen candidates for government roles. The Group C posts include various roles such as junior engineers, clerks, excise and taxation inspectors, auditors, assistant managers, patwaris, and male and female police constables, while Group D roles in Haryana include various entry-level positions in government departments, including peon, animal attendant, helper, gardener, cook and water carrier. The CET for Group-C posts, held on July 26 and 27, saw participation from nearly 12.22 lakh eligible candidates. Conducted over the weekend at 1,350 centres across the state, the exam registered an exceptional 92% turnout. HSSC chairman Himmat Singh described this level of attendance as 'a possible national record', noting that it was 'far beyond the usual 55–60% seen in competitive exams'. In the next phase, the main examination for Group-C recruitment will be conducted, with participation open to a candidate pool 10 times the number of available positions. The CET for Group-D posts is expected to be held in September, with officials anticipating participation from nearly 17 lakh candidates. The scale of this exercise will require extensive logistical coordination. So far, appointments to Group-D posts have been made solely based on performance in the Common Eligibility Test (CET). The schedule for the second exam of Group-C posts is not yet clear, but it will likely be held this year only, the officials said. Excited over the successful execution of the recent CET, Himmat Singh said: 'We have received calls from some commissions that also execute competitive exams for government jobs. They are keen to know how we executed such an exam involving lakhs of candidates successfully.' He added: 'Officials from some of the commissions have even planned to visit Haryana to see the system and pattern adopted for successful execution of the exam.' To support candidates logistically, Haryana transport authorities had operated more than 30,000 bus rounds, providing free transportation. In partnership with social organisations, the government also arranged overnight lodging for candidates travelling from distant areas. 'Through AI-based monitoring and CCTV, incidents like cheating and paper leaks were completely prevented. We kept a close watch on all centres, and now the CCTV footage will be reviewed to prepare the final report. This technological approach not only enhances transparency but also instils trust in fairness among candidates,' Singh remarked. Maharashtra govt withdraws EWS quota in private medical colleges
Agency: PTI Mumbai, July 31 (PTI) In a significant policy reversal, the Maharashtra government has withdrawn its earlier decision to implement the 10 per cent Economically Weaker Section (EWS) reservation in private medical colleges. The rollback was notified by the state Medical Education Department on Wednesday, with the government clarifying that the quota will be applicable only if the Central government and respective councils increase existing seats. 'For MBBS/BAMS/BDS/BHMS and BUMS courses, this reservation will be applicable only if the Central Government, respective councils increase existing seats. For courses other than MBBS/BDS/BAMS/BHMS and BUMS courses, the 10 per cent EWS reservation will be applicable on available seats," the Medical Education Department stated. Last week, when the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell declared commencement of admissions for medical undergraduate (UG) courses, the information brochure indicated implementation of the 10 per cent EWS reservation in private medical colleges. The move led to apprehension among students and parents as the quota decision meant drastically reducing the number of open category seats without increasing the intake of seats. This is the second major rollback by the state government in the field of education in less than a month.
