Anil Vij Urges Youth to Limit Screen Time, Announces Rs 12.5 Lakh Grant for Meritorious Students
AMBALA: Haryana's cabinet minister for power, transport and labour, Anil Vij, expressed serious concern over the growing obsession of the younger generation with mobile phones, televisions, and computers. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Speaking at the 'Bhavishya Jyoti Samaroh' organized by a national daily to honor meritorious students from Ambala district, Vij urged youth to limit screen time in order to preserve mental and physical well-being. Addressing a gathering as the chief guest, Vij said, 'Today, people spend most of their time watching the world through TV screens, reacting to what they see. The younger generation is getting lost in mobile phones and digital screens. If we truly want to reform our youth, we must begin by encouraging them to use mobile phones and TVs sparingly.' At the event, minister Vij honored 125 top-performing students from various schools in the district. He also announced a personal donation of Rs 12.5 lakh from his voluntary fund, pledging Rs 10,000 to each of the recognized students as a gesture of support for their academic excellence. Highlighting both the pros and cons of technology, Vij said, 'Technology has made our society more aware and connected, but it has also distanced us from each other. In earlier times, people would gather in their neighborhoods and engage in conversations. That spirit of community is fading.' He emphasized the need for society-builders and mentors who can help shape the character of the youth. 'We need individuals who can guide the next generation toward a life of purpose and value,' he added. Stressing the adverse impact of excessive mobile phone use, Vij noted its harmful effects on mental health. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'The brain is constantly running, and continuous screen exposure is weakening our cognitive strength. We must adapt to technology, but also maintain a healthy distance from it,' he said. Quoting the ancient Sanskrit saying 'Tamso Ma Jyotirgamaya' (Lead me from darkness to light), Vij underlined the importance of moving from ignorance to knowledge. He reminisced about his own student days, when learning was confined to schoolbooks and long hours in the state library. 'In our times, we didn't have mobile phones or internet. We relied on books and deep reading to gain knowledge, but today, access to knowledge is unlimited. Still, the desire to learn must come from within.' Calling the felicitation of students a noble initiative, Vij appreciated the role of media houses in recognizing young talent and contributing to social change. 'Every individual has some unique talent or capability. Success is a combination of ability and opportunity. Without opportunities, even the most capable person's talent may remain undiscovered.' He lauded newspapers as the mirror of society and praised the organizing media outlet for its contribution to education and community welfare. 'The word 'NEWS' itself represents North, East, West, and South – a reflection of what's happening all around us. It is the responsibility of newspapers to present the truth and shape public thought. Amar Ujala is doing commendable work in this direction,' he remarked. The ceremony was attended by hundreds of students, their parents, and local dignitaries.

Ambala prepares to unveil memorial honouring 1857's freedom fighters
After nearly two decades of delays and political hurdles, the memorial dedicated to the 1857 First War of Independence is nearing completion along National Highway 44 in Ambala Cantonment. Sprawled across 22 acres and built at a cost of ₹600 crore, the grand structure has been named 'Azadi Ki Pehli Ladai Ka Shaheedi Samarak.' Ambala's role in 1857 uprising Backed by the research of the late Professor KC Yadav, a prominent historian who unearthed key British documents, the Haryana government asserts that the 1857 revolt actually began in Ambala Cantonment—not Meerut as widely believed. According to Yadav's work, regiments stationed in Ambala initiated the rebellion on the morning of May 10, hours before the uprising in Meerut. His findings are documented in his book The Revolt of 1857 in Haryana. Vision becomes reality after years of delay The idea for the memorial was first conceived in the early 2000s by senior BJP leader and local MLA Anil Vij, who persisted with the proposal through successive governments. Despite initial support from the then Congress government under Bhupinder Singh Hooda, the foundation stone ceremony was postponed twice. It was only after the BJP came to power in Haryana that progress was made. The foundation was finally laid by chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar in May 2015, and construction began in December 2018. Some of the highlights of the memorial are the lotus-shaped tower, open-air theatre, a few of the total 22 galleries, audio-visual galleries and other highlights of the memorial. The Samarak also houses a library, helipad for VVIP visitors, exhibition hall, children's park, a huge cafeteria and food court, and underground parking facility for 400 vehicles. 'The memorial will be a true homage to those who fought against the British rule and were punished, killed or even hanged to trees till dead,' Anil Vij, a seventh-term MLA, said. Inauguration likely by PM Modi Memorial director Kuldeep Saini said that a section is also dedicated to a collection of clay (mitti) from 20 places in India, where the revolution also broke out. 'The memorial is expected to be completed by August. We will also hire nearly 35 guides for the visitors and foreign delegates. A total of 100 short films of different durations are also being prepared. We will seek time from the prime minister's office for the inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi,' he added.

‘Pakistan cannot afford war with India…will be brought to its senses': Haryana minister Anil Vij says PM Modi does what he says
Pakistan 'will soon be brought to its senses', Haryana Minister for Energy, Transport and Labour Anil Vij said Friday amid heightened tensions at the border following India's Operation Sindoor and counter-strikes by the neighbouring country's forces. Speaking about the directions for blackout in Ambala, Vij said, 'Full preparedness is essential, and nothing can be done without public cooperation, which is why blackout orders have been issued.' Interacting with reporters, the seven-time MLA from Ambala Cantonment said, 'India will treat Pakistan in a way it would have never imagined. They [Pakistan] opened terror factories and sent terrorists to kill our unarmed civilians. Pakistan cannot afford to have a war with India'. 'Operation Sindoor is another instance which shows that Prime Minister Narendra Modi does what he says. PM Modi has a record of fulfilling his promises, be it the construction of the Ram Temple, abolishing triple talaq, or the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. All mistakes made by previous leaders of the country are now being corrected,' Vij said. Speaking about the ongoing water dispute linked to the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), Vij said, 'The Punjab government's actions are not in national interest. The country is heading towards war, armies are positioned face-to-face, attacks are happening daily, and instead of unity, they [Punjab government] are picking fights with neighbouring states. This is the time for us to stay united.' HPSC postpones May 11 exams The Haryana Public Service Commission (HPSC) has postponed examinations scheduled for May 11. 'These examinations were to be conducted for the posts of Assistant Professor in the College Cadre for the subjects of Chemistry (Advertisement No. 43/2024) and Physics (Advertisement No. 61/2024). Originally set for May 11, the exams were to be held in the morning and evening sessions but have now been postponed until further notice,' a statement from an HPSC spokesperson said. 'The revised date for the examinations will be communicated by the Commission at a later time. Candidates are advised to regularly check the official website of the Commission for the latest updates,' it added. Rs 5 lakh granted to each district Dr Sumita Misra, Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department and Revenue and Disaster Management Department, said Friday that the state government has sanctioned Rs 1.10 crore, allotting Rs 5 lakh each to the deputy commissioners of 22 districts in Haryana 'to address any emergent situations'. 'All Deputy Commissioners (DC) have been directed to exercise strict financial discipline and ensure that the allocated funds are utilized exclusively for the intended purpose. No expenditure beyond the sanctioned limit shall be incurred without prior approval of the government. As per the guidelines, only the amount actually required should be drawn from the treasury,' read the order issued by the Department of Revenue and Disaster Management. 'All DCs are instructed to submit monthly expenditure statements in Form 26 and 29 to the accounts branch of the department by the 10th of every month,' it added. Warning against hoarding Dr Misra also directed all DCs to issue stern warnings against hoarding essential goods in order to avoid panic-buying across the state. Directions were also issued to ensure that district-level control rooms remain fully operational around the clock, and to ensure that air warning systems, emergency and medical facilities are fully functional.
