UFL Week 9 By The Numbers: Cornell Powell, Justin Hall shine
Week 9 of the 2025 UFL season featured some dominant performances and down-to-the-wire finishes.
The St. Louis Battlehawks , Birmingham Stallions , Arlington Renegades and Houston Roughnecks were victorious, while the San Antonio Brahmas , Michigan Panthers , Memphis Showboats and DC Defenders fell flat.

Here are the numbers to know after Week 9.
5: Birmingham beat Michigan, 26-22, sweeping the season series and improving the Stallions' record to 5-0 vs the Panthers in the UFL since the start of last season (and 7-0 dating back to their meetings in the USFL). After scoring the go-ahead TD with just over 2 minutes left in the fourth quarter, Birmingham's defense held strong, halting Michigan's comeback attempt with four stops from inside their own 10-yard line. The Panthers will have one more chance to break their skid against the Stallions when they meet in a rematch of last year's Conference Championship Game in Birmingham in two weeks.
7: DC wide receiver Cornell Powell is up to a league-best seven receiving touchdowns on the season after his second straight multi-TD game. Powell went for eight catches for 104 yards and two TDs against Houston on Sunday, including a TD grab with three seconds left in the fourth quarter that gave DC a shot at tying the game with a 3-point conversion. The former Clemson wideout has been on a tear in the second half of the year with five TDs over his last three games.
10: Houston's Justin Hall became the first player in UFL history with back-to-back games with 10 catches. The 26-year-old Hall had 10 receptions, 126 yards, and a TD in the 24-21 win over DC. The league-leader in catches this season had 11 catches a week ago and is now up to 58 on the season – 18 clear of the next closest player in the league.
39: The 7-2 St. Louis Battlehawks have now rolled off five straight wins as they dispatched San Antonio 39-13 in their final home game of the regular season. The 39 points set a single-game high in the UFL this season. QB Max Duggan played the first half, leading the team to 21 points (including one defensive TD) before backup Brandon Silvers came on and played well in the second half as the Battlehawks tacked on another 18 points after halftime.
70: St. Louis CB Micah Abraham had a debut to remember. Playing in his first game since being signed two weeks ago, Abraham forced a fumble, scooped it up and returned it 70 yards for a TD in the second quarter on Friday night. Making the moment even more special: Micah's father, Donnie, is the Battlehawks Defensive Coordinator.
107: Arlington's Tyler Vaughns posted his second 100-yard receiving game of the season with his eight-catch, 107-yard, one-TD game in the win over Memphis. Vaughns put the Renegades ahead for good with his 41-yard TD in the third quarter as Arlington rolled to a 30-12 win.
307: Birmingham QB J'Mar Smith threw for 307 yards and two TDs in the Stallions' comeback win over Michigan. After leading the defending champs to a win off the bench two weeks ago, Smith now has his first win as a starter. Smith connected with Deon Cain for his second TD of the day with 2:22 left in the fourth quarter to put Birmingham in front.

The UFL's four playoff spots have been wrapped up, while the league has determined the locations for each conference championship game. That means the Birmingham Stallions, DC Defenders, Michigan Panthers and St. Louis Battlehawks may all consider resting some of their starters to stay healthy for the championship games. Meanwhile, fans of the other four teams – the Arlington Renegades, Houston Roughnecks, Memphis Showboats and San Antonio Brahmas – will get one last chance to cheer their squads on during the 2025 campaign. After that, each team will enter offseason mode, where uncertainty will surround rosters as players make the jump to the NFL. The final week of the 2025 UFL season will feature four matchups. There will be one game played on Friday and one Saturday before a doubleheader closes the regular season on Sunday. As such, it's fair to expect both teams will hold a little something back, especially with the game already set to be held in St. Louis. The Defenders are expected to sit first-team quarterback Jordan Ta'amu and give Mike DiLiello a chance to prove himself. The Austin Peay product completed 17 of 29 passes for 206 yards and a touchdown while playing the second half of DC's Week 9 loss to Houston. Presently, the Battlehawks are expected to start Max Duggan, who took over for the injured Manny Wilkins as St. Louis' starter midway through the 2025 UFL season. Brandon Silvers could get time at quarterback as well after splitting reps with Duggan last week. Can they stay hot to end the season against the Panthers? Houston will rely on quarterback Jalan McClendon to make that happen. He completed 21 of 30 passes last week for 232 yards and two touchdowns, while Lorenzo Lingard averaged 10 yards per carry on the ground. If those two can play well, the Panthers may have trouble slowing down the Roughnecks' offense. Of course, it's also worth noting the Panthers will play in the USFL conference championship next week. The game is already set to be played in Birmingham, so it isn't clear whether coach Mike Nolan will use this week to rest his starters. That could complicate Michigan's potential path to victory. DARYL JOHNSTON: UFL coaching departures not about lack of confidence in league Sunday UFL game times, TV channels, live streams Arlington Renegades (4-5) at San Antonio Brahmas (1-9) Start time : Noon ET : Noon ET TV channel : ABC : ABC Live stream: Fubo, ESPN+ The Renegades and Brahmas are both out of playoff contention, so this game will be all about pride. Arlington showed some last week by pummeling Memphis 30-12 despite already being out of the postseason race and could succeed against a similarly struggling opponent. San Antonio ranks last in the UFL in both points scored and allowed per game this season, so barring a big game from running back Jashaun Corbin, the Brahmas may be hard-pressed to end their five-game losing streak. Birmingham Stallions (6-3) at Memphis Showboats (2-7) Start time : 3 p.m. ET : 3 p.m. ET TV channel : Fox : Fox Live stream: Fubo The Stallions are set to host the USFL championship game next weekend. Like their other playoff-bound counterparts, they may opt to rest their starters with not much on the line. Meanwhile, Memphis is looking ahead to next season and has been splitting time between E.J. Perry and Dresser Winn at quarterback. If the Brahmas win, the Showboats will need to win to avoid tying for the UFL's worst record in 2025. If not, Memphis will simply be looking to close a disappointing season on a high note.

Aston Villa's player of the season: Youri Tielemans – fitter than ever, better than ever
It came as little surprise that Youri Tielemans swept up at Aston Villa's end-of-season awards. His form has been unerring, a still point in a campaign of contrasting emotions. Fifty-two starts in 55 matches — 4,511 minutes — for a 28-year-old central midfielder demonstrated a unique robustness, made more impressive given criticism of his athleticism, physicality and mobility at previous club Leicester City. During his debut campaign at Villa he was frequently sluggish when opportunities to play arose, making just 17 Premier League starts. Advertisement This season, however, he came narrowly close to being Villa's sole Premier League ever-present, until injury earlier this month curtailed things. Regardless, he became the first Villa player to start more than 50 games in a single season since Alan Wright and Mark Bosnich in 1995-1996. Memories can often be short in football and it was only in August when many were pondering where Tielemans actually fitted into Unai Emery's starting XI. Boubacar Kamara was close to returning after an ACL injury and was expected to be partnered by new £50million club-record signing Amadou Onana. A similar scenario a transpired a year earlier, when Douglas Luiz had forged a midfield partnership with Kamara that had left Tielemans making do with either a substitute role or competing for one of the two No 10 spots further up the pitch. Speak to close observers and the Belgium international is a player and character who requires rhythm; he needs regular games and a lot of them to feel fully attuned. Even if he did develop his work between the lines as a No 10 last season, he did not necessarily have the confidence or speed of thought to influence matches. This time has been different. He seized the small window of opportunity as Kamara was weeks away from recovering fitness and ensured he became undroppable and indispensable in Emery's mind. He started the season how he finished it: the gravitational centre of Villa's build-up play. He has grown in presence and authority in the changing room. On the pitch, he directs play and takes up positions to help progress Villa up the field. No player has made more forward passes than Tielemans. Indeed, no player has made more passes, tackles, or accrued more minutes. He became the first player in the Premier League this season to create more than 50 chances and make over 200 passes into the final third. Only Morgan Rogers, possibly the only team-mate to rival Tielemans for player of the season, is ahead in assists. Advertisement More impressively, he has rarely lost a midfield battle, despite being up against ostensibly bigger and more athletic opponents. He is fitter than ever, more intense in his pressing and counter-pressing and such has been the improvement Emery frequently instructs him to lock on and pressurise the opponent's deepest midfielder, knowing Tielemans now has the physique and fitness to make longer sprints and cover larger areas. Tielemans is, in many ways, a throwback. Football has become an increasingly athletic sport, where recruitment can be based as much on physical ability as technical. Those who are technically gifted and would have thrived in previous eras can be left behind if they are not seen to have the ability to eat up ground. An inherently end-to-end game, exceptionally so with Villa a transition-based attacking team, does not exactly suit a player like Tielemans once was. Even though Villa signed him aged 26, scouts and recruitment specialists, who spoke to The Athletic on the condition of anonymity to protect relationships, insist there was a perception his best years were behind him. While still young, he had already been a professional for a decade and it was felt, or was beginning feel, like there were too many matches in his legs and it was taking a toll on his performances. It is why the clubs he was previously linked to — Arsenal and Manchester United — were not in the running when his contract at Leicester expired. Villa pounced, emboldened by Emery's affection and the club's recruitment team looking beyond perception and running critical numbers on his data. The feedback suggested he was part of a failing team that was proving detrimental to his own development, rather than any physical decline. He joined as a free agent in June 2023 with a hefty signing-on fee. If he was to leave, Villa would certainly make a sizeable profit that the PSR accounting books would be deeply thankful for. Advertisement Through patience and perseverance, Tielemans has transformed into what was expected of him as a precocious teenager at Anderlecht. He's one of the best central midfielders around, possessing a rare capacity to control the game through the tempo he sets on the ball and ensuring his endurance is up to such levels that no one can hold it against him. He thinks quicker than most, he sees developing pictures ahead of him quicker and is malleable enough to make the same impact either as a deep-lying playmaker, box-to-box midfielder or a No 10. Even when Villa won just six times in 21 fixtures between September and February, owing to a general flatlining of performance, Tielemans was a cut above. Central midfield is one of the most demanding positions, and especially so under Emery. They must have the courage to take the ball in tight areas while playing at maximum intensity. There has to be equal composure and ferocity. Tielemans has mastered the balance, being brave in wanting the ball whatever the situation or stadium while never willingly giving ground to an opponent. Former MSU QB Rocky Lombardi to start for UFL's Michigan Panthers this weekend A former Michigan State quarterback is set to make a start in the UFL this week. Former Spartans quarterback Rocky Lombardi will reportedly start for the Michigan Panthers in their regular season-finale on Saturday afternoon from Ford Field in Detroit. James Larsen reported the notable news related to Lombardi on Thursday. Lombardi has primarily served as the Panther's third string quarterback this season, according to Larsen. Lombardi has not recorded any stats in any of the Panthers' games so far this year. Lombardi played three seasons at Michigan State from 2018 to 2020, where he appeared in 22 games at quarterback. He notably led Michigan State to upset wins over Purdue in 2018, and Michigan and Northwestern in 2020. His performance against the Wolverines in 2020 is still considered an all-timer for Michigan State. Following the 2020 season, Lombardi transferred to Northern Illinois where he started most of the three seasons he played with he Huskies, which included winning the MAC championship in 2021. Kickoff between the Panthers and Houston Roughnecks is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday. The game will be televised on ESPN.
