The mystery surrounding the missing Indore couple in Meghalaya has finally been solved.
In a major breakthrough, police on Monday confirmed the arrest of Sonam Raghuvanshi — wife of the deceased Raja Raghuvanshi — along with three men accused of being contract killers hired to murder her husband during their honeymoon.
Over the last couple of weeks, the case had captured national headlines, with police launching an extensive search operation to find the missing woman. After Raja was found brutally murdered in a gorge in the Sohra region, her family suspected that the couple might have been robbed or kidnapped. But now, the case has unravelled as a cold and calculated murder plot.

But how did the police crack the case? Here's what we know
When a rejected local guide became a key witness
On the day Sonam and Raja went missing, the couple was trekking through a forested trail, reportedly on their way to Meghalaya's famed double-decker living root bridges in Sohra.
On their way, Albert Pde, a local guide in the Nongriat village, had offered his services to newlyweds. The couple declined, choosing another guide.
However, what was odd was that Pde saw them again the next day—this time, accompanied by three unknown men, climbing the 3,000 steps back to Mawlakhiat.

'I saw the couple with three men on the way up. The men were walking ahead, and the woman was behind them. They were speaking in Hindi,' Albert later told the police. His statement would become central to the investigation, helping police track the suspects.
Earlier, an audio clip believed to be the couple's last contact with their family before vanishing also surfaced. In the recording, accessed by India Today, Sonam was heard interacting with her mother-in-law.
Sonam describes the tough terrain they were navigating. 'We're in a dense forest, nothing is available here. The climb is steep. I had told him (Raja) not to go, but he never listens. I'm exhausted. The food here isn't good either. It's hard to breathe while walking,' she says in the clip.

That phone call turned out to be the last time anyone heard from them.
Eleven days after they disappeared, a police drone located Raja's decomposed body at the bottom of a gorge near Wei Sawdong Falls. Police then launched a major search operation , with more than 50 to 60 people looking for Sonam, who was still missing.
'Sonam came crying, asked for phone'
The search for Sonam came to an unexpected end — not in the forests of Meghalaya, but over 1,000 kilometres away in Uttar Pradesh.
She was found near a roadside dhaba in Nandganj, around 40 km from Varanasi. According to the dhaba owner, Sahil Yadav, Sonam looked distraught and asked to use his mobile phone to call home.
'It is a matter of around 1 am last night, when she came to the shop and was crying. She said that she had to call home. I gave her my mobile phone and she dialled. I asked her to sit there,' Sahil told the media, pointing to a chair nearby.

He added that he immediately called the police. 'She was all alone when she came. I have the number of her family on my phone.'
Sonam was taken to Sadar Hospital for a check-up and later shifted to a One Stop Centre for women in distress.
The first photo of Sonam since her disappearance surfaced on Monday, showing her wearing a black T-shirt and track pants. According to Uttar Pradesh Police, she looked 'distraught with fever.'
UP Director General of Police Rajiv Krishna said Sonam would be handed over to the Indore Police once they arrive in Ghazipur. He clarified that UP Police would not question her.

Meghalaya Police claims 'contract killing'
Meanwhile, the story took a dramatic turn with Meghalaya Police accusing Sonam of planning her husband's murder.
'The arrested men have revealed that the wife had hired them to kill Raghuvanshi,' said Meghalaya's Director General of Police, I Nongrang.
Sources told CNN-News18 that Raj Kushwaha, who is said to have been in a relationship with Sonam Raghuvanshi, is believed to be the 'mastermind' behind Raja Raghuvanshi's murder.
Sources added that the possible reason for the killing was Sonam's relationship with Raj Kushwaha, whom she had known before she got married.
They also said Sonam may have booked the honeymoon trip as part of the plan to have her husband killed.
Inspector General Dalton P Marak added that Sonam surrendered under pressure and would be brought back to Meghalaya. They said that while three have been arrested, one of the accused is still absconding.
Earlier, Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma praised the police for making swift progress.

Sonam's family claims innocence, demands CBI inquiry
Back in Indore, Sonam's family is standing by her and demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the case.
Her father, Devi Singh, rejected all allegations and accused the police of spinning a false narrative.
'My daughter reached the roadside eatery, and she was crying and called from there. It was from the dhaba that the police picked her up. I haven't spoken to my daughter yet,' he told PTI.
'The police are lying,' he claimed. 'Why would my daughter do something like this? If she intended to do something like this, why would she go out travelling?"

He alleged that Sonam was abducted and remains under threat. 'The Meghalaya Police have cooked up this story midway. My daughter is innocent,' he said, urging Union Home Minister Amit Shah to intervene.
Neighbours in Indore were equally stunned as news of Sonam's arrest spread.
'I can't believe it, she was a well-behaved and educated girl,' one neighbour told ANI. 'The girl may be involved, but we can't claim anything. She was a nice, simple girl. We don't think she would have done it.'

Supreme Court to hear plea on threats of violence linked to the screening of Thug Life in Karnataka on June 13
The Supreme Court on Monday (June 9, 2025) agreed to hear on June 13 a plea to ensure the safe and unimpeded screening of Kamal Haasan's Tamil movie 'Thug Life' in Karnataka, and direct the State government to take action against elements who have issued threats and incited violence against theatres and the makers of the film. A Vacation Bench headed by Justice P.K. Mishra scheduled the case for hearing this week on the basis of an oral mentioning made by the advocates for the petitioner, M. Mahesh Reddy, a Bengaluru resident, represented by advocates A. Velan and Navpreet Kaur. Ms. Kaur, seeking urgent listing of the writ petition, said 'fringe elements' were threatening arson against the theatres that screen the film. Mr. Velan said the move to appeal to the apex court had been necessitated by the fact that the Karnataka High Court had 'distressingly appeared to prioritise appeasement'. 'Instead of a clear directive to the State to stop the illegal threats and protect a certified film's exhibition, fundamental to restoring law and order, the discussion reportedly focused on whether Mr. Kamal Haasan should apologise to the very fringe elements intimidating him and threatening public order. This effective endorsement of coercive censorship by suggesting compromise with perpetrators makes the High Court pathway currently ineffective for securing justice, compelling this urgent appeal in the Supreme Court as the ultimate guardian of the Constitution,' the petition submitted. The petition questioned the Karnataka government's 'flagrant failure' to maintain law and order in the State, and protect constitutional freedoms. It said the 'unconstitutional extra-judicial ban' in Karnataka stems not from any lawful process but from a deliberate campaign of terror, including explicit threats of arson against cinema halls, incitement to large-scale communal violence targeting linguistic minorities, and a chilling call for a repeat of past anti-Tamil riots. 'This serious situation occurs within a disturbing societal context where chauvinistic elements have targeted linguistic minorities such as Hindi speakers in Bengaluru with impunity, fostering a climate of fear that now directly threatens constitutional order over this film… Even as Victory Cinema, a movie theatre in Bengaluru, announced its intent to screen 'Thug Life', forces of intimidation struck openly. Mr. T.A. Narayana Gowda of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) publicly threatened to 'set theatres on fire' while social media was used for inciting a violent revival of the 1991 anti-Tamil riots,' the petition highlighted.

Meghalaya murder case: 'Raja was reluctant for Shillong trip', says family; Sonam and victim wore expensive jewellery to honeymoon
Meghalaya murder case: 'Sonam didn't book return tickets', family shares shocking details; Wife made him wear expensive jewellery to honeymoon NEW DELHI: The murder case of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi in Meghalaya hills has sent shockwaves, with more details emerging. Now, the mother of the murdered businessman, Uma Raghuvanshi, has shared more insights, saying that his son was not willing to go on honeymoon so soon. But she (mother) told him to go if his wife, Sonam, has booked the tickets. Uma also said that Sonam planned the trip for their honeymoon but did not book the return ticket. Talking about his wedding, she said, it was an arranged marriage, and Sonam's behaviour was good with the family, so they never had any doubt about her. Meanwhile, Raja's brother Vipul Raghuvanshi claimed that the couple had earlier made plans for visiting Kamakhya temple in Guwahati but unexpectedly changed their plan. 'Raja did not want to go on honeymoon,' says his mother According to a report from news agency PTI, Uma Raghuvanshi told reporters, "My son went to Meghalaya with Sonam on her insistence. He did not want to go on honeymoon so soon. My son had told me that Sonam booked tickets for the trip to Meghalaya. I told him that if the ticket has been booked, then he should go to Meghalaya with his wife." "My son also told me that although Sonam had not booked the return ticket for both of them from Meghalaya, they will return to Indore in six-seven days," she added. No scratch on her body On seeing the latest picture of Sonam (from Ghazipur), Uma Raghuvanshi expressed shock as there was not even a scratch mark on her body. "I want to hear from Sonam, where, why and in what condition she left Raja," she said. 'Sonam avoided going out with Raja before marriage' Sharing details about Raja and Sonam's wedding, Uma said that after their engagement, her daughter-in-law did not spend enough time with her son and avoided going out with him before marriage. "When we had asked Sonam about this, she said that she has a lot of work to do in the office. Sonam said if she is not able to call my son, then my son can also call her," she said. "Sonam's mother had told me that her family is very strict against a man and a woman meeting before marriage and Sonam's father does not like such meetings," she added. 'Wedding happened with consent of the couple' Uma told reporters that wedding was held in traditional way and with the consent of Raja, Sonam and both families. "My son was very happy after the marriage. He wanted Sonam as his wife from the bottom of his heart. We still cannot believe that she could get her husband killed. It would have been better if my son had remained unmarried, as it could have saved his life," she said. 'She should be hanged to death' Uma said that she feels quite restless at night after losing her son, adding that if Sonam got Raja killed, then she should be hanged to death. "I tell my son's photo that whoever did wrong to him should be punished," she said. Family suspects Sonam and her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha's involvement Talking to IANS, Vipin Raghuvanshi, the brother of the deceased, said, "There is news that has come out, and honestly, we are all shocked because we had never heard any news like this before. I had never even seen it. Until now, we have been searching for Sonam, and now, Sonam has been found. Sonam's name is coming out as a conspirator." "Raj Kushwaha, I heard the name before, as he was an employer of Sonam's company. He and Sonam both can be involved. However, we would still like to wait for a proper investigation," he added. Raja's sister-in-law, Bhumi Raghuvanshi, added, "We were very shocked to hear Sonam's name coming up. We cannot believe this at all, but now we want a proper investigation to be conducted regarding Sonam. If she did this, then why? The marriage happened with consent, and both were happy, but why would she do this? We demand a swift investigation." 'Plan unexpectedly changed' Vipul further disclosed that Raja and Sonam initially planned to visit Kamakhya temple in Guwahati but unexpectedly changed the plan and headed to Shillong. He said that Sonak had made all the bookings, and her family was unaware of the sudden change in their plan. Raja was wearing expensive jewellery worth Rs 10 lakh Sonam left for the airport from her paternal home wearing her wedding jewellery, according to the family. According to an IANS report, the Indore businessman was also carrying ornaments, including a diamond ring, chain, and bracelet valued at over Rs 10 lakh, to their honeymoon. Uma Raghuvanshi had also questioned the need to carry so much jewellery. What happened so far? Raja and Sonam got married on May 11 and left for Meghalaya on May 20. On May 23, the couple got missing while vacationing in Sohra area in East Khasi Hills district. Later on June 2, Raghuvanshi's body was found in a gorge and operations were launched to find Sonam, who went missing after her husband's murder. The northeastern state's police on Monday morning said that Raja Raghuvanshi was allegedly killed by men hired by his wife, Sonam, during their honeymoon in Meghalaya.
