Bipasha Basu recalls being called ‘crazy' for starring in Mahesh Bhatt's erotic thriller Jism: ‘You cannot do adult film'

Indian Express26-05-2025

Bipasha Basu was just three years into the film industry—with hits like Raaz and Ajnabee under her belt—when she made the bold decision to star in Mahesh Bhatt's Jism. The move was widely frowned upon and deemed a potential career disaster, given the film's erotic theme and provocative title. Yet, the actor chose to go ahead because she was deeply drawn to the story.
In an interview with Hindustan Times, Bipasha opened up about challenging her image of the 'typical Hindi heroine' by choosing to do Jism. She said, 'Jism was the time when I was at the peak, and everyone told me, 'You cannot do an adult content film. You are like the typical Hindi heroine who is now established in people's hearts.' And I said, I just like the story so much. I said I'll go ahead and do it. Everybody stopped me from doing it. My manager thought I had gone crazy.'
Bipasha revealed that although it was a risky move to take on such an erotic role in Jism, the film ultimately changed perspectives about what female actors could do on screen — especially when it came to playing grey or negative characters. It also influenced fashion and beauty trends among Indian women. 'But it worked for me and then things changed. Women suddenly were tonging their hair. They wore a bronze look. There was no stereotypical (thinking) that the woman can't play the negative character. It all changed after that. So it's been path-breaking for me. That has been one very important film,' she said.
Earlier, in an interaction on Tinder Swipe Ride, Pooja Bhatt — who produced Jism — recalled how she kept checking on Bipasha's comfort levels while filming intimate scenes, but overlooked John Abraham, the male lead. She was later confronted by him for the same.
She recounted, 'I went to actually explain to them what was required, and I'm telling Bipasha that this is what we have to do, but if you are not comfortable… and John just looked at me and said, 'Excuse me? Does somebody mind asking me whether I am comfortable doing this?' For me, that was like somebody threw a bucket of cold water on me. I said, how presumptuous of us women to think that it's only the woman who is awkward in an intimate situation. The poor guy.'
Jism was directed by Amit Saxena and written by Mahesh Bhatt. The film also marked the Hindi film debut of John Abraham. It went on to become a massive success at the box office, cementing its place as a game-changer in the genre.

Aamir Khan Welcomes Sachin Tendulkar Home; Sitaare Zameen Par Cast Jumps With Joy

Last Updated: Aamir Khan welcomed Sachin Tendulkar home and introduced him to the Sitaare Zameen Par cast. The video is going viral. Aamir Khan welcomed Sachin Tendulkar home in the presence of well-known names from the film industry. As a video from their meeting goes viral, fans can't help but notice the joy on the faces of the newly-launched Sitaare Zameen Par cast after spotting the former Indian cricketer. Sachin, who is close friends with Aamir, arrived to meet him with his wife Anjali. After the video went viral, fans drew speculations about the setting of the meeting. While some social media users claimed it took place at Aamir Khan's house, others believed it happened after a special screening of Sitaare Zameen Par. In one video, a guest is seen informing Aamir that Sachin has arrived while the former was playing foosball, prompting him to warmly welcome both Sachin and Anjali. The moment the cricket legend appears, the other guests light up with excitement and begin chanting his name. Sachin, visibly humbled, remained calm as he greeted the guests and Sitaare Zameen Par cast one after the other. The superstar was last seen in 2022 film, Laal Singh Chaddha. 'Well, I'm not considering it a comeback film, quite honestly," Aamir told us exclusively. 'My films usually come out once in three years anyway. A lot of actors have 8 to 10 flops, but we don't call those comebacks, do we? I've had just one flop, and you're calling it a comeback? I haven't gone anywhere," he added. Aamir explained that he was drawn to Sitaare Zameen Par because its story felt like a natural continuation of the message delivered in his 2007 film Taare Zameen Par. 'The script felt like an extension of what we were trying to say in Taare. That film was about inclusion, about a child with a learning disability. But in Sitaare, the challenge is even greater. It deals with individuals who have intellectual disabilities—children on the autism spectrum, with Down syndrome—who are much more atypical compared to dyslexia. And what's even more beautiful is that this time, it's not the neurotypical person helping them, but the other way around. The neurodivergent kids help the coach. That's why I feel this film goes ten steps ahead in the same theme." Aamir added that the story resonated deeply with him, so much so that it felt like a 'spiritual sequel" to Taare Zameen Par, which is why the makers settled on the title Sitaare Zameen Par. Sitaare Zameen Par is directed by RS Prasanna, and produced by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit. Also starring Genelia Deshmukh and ten newcomers, the film is a remake of the Spanish film, Champions. It releases on June 20. First Published:
