JOHANNESBURG : South African President Cyril Ramaphosa placed police minister Senzo Mchunu on immediate leave of absence on Sunday, following accusations by a top police official that he had colluded with a criminal syndicate and interfered in high-profile investigations.
Mchunu denied the allegations by Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, police commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal province, at a media briefing last Sunday. He said the accusations were baseless and in a statement issued by his spokesperson last week said he was committed to upholding the rule of law.
Ramaphosa, whose rise to the highest office was built on promises to fight corruption, has been under pressure to act swiftly as political parties and citizens said the allegations called into question the integrity of the criminal justice system.
Investors have for years expressed concern over rampant crime that the World Bank estimates costs South Africa an estimated 10% of gross domestic product each year.
'These allegations therefore call for an urgent and comprehensive investigation,' Ramaphosa said in a public address which was carried by the public broadcaster and private TV stations, adding he would establish a judicial commission of inquiry for this purpose.
Ramaphosa said he will appoint law professor Firoz Cachalia as acting minister of police.
Mchunu is a senior figure in Ramaphosa's African National Congress (ANC) party, and political analysts have said he could run for a leadership position at the ANC's next elective conference in 2027.
Citing digital evidence such as WhatsApp messages, Mkhwanazi's allegations included that Mchunu had disbanded a police unit tasked with investigating politically motivated killings to protect politicians, police officers and other people linked to a criminal syndicate.
Mkhwanazi said more than 100 case files were taken away from the political killings task team and have not been investigated further since.
The Democratic Alliance party, the ANC's main coalition partner, called for a parliamentary inquiry into the allegations against Mchunu. At least one opposition party has called for his suspension.

South Africa continues tariff negotiation with U.S.

JOHANNESBURG, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- With a 30-percent tariff imposed by the United States set to take effect, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Friday pledged to pursue all diplomatic efforts to safeguard the national interests. According to a statement released by the presidency, South Africa will continue to negotiate with the United States regarding the 30 percent tariff, which is now expected to take effect at 12:01 a.m. EDT (0401 GMT) on Aug. 7. The South African government has presented the U.S. side with a framework deal aimed at enhancing mutually beneficial trade and investment relations. "All channels of communication remain open to engage with the United States, and our negotiators are ready, pending an invitation from the United States," the presidency said in the statement. The presidency noted that the South African government is finalizing a package to support companies vulnerable to reciprocal tariffs, which includes several measures to assist firms, producers, and workers. "South Africa will continue to pursue all diplomatic efforts to safeguard its national interests," said the presidency. On Tuesday, the South African government acknowledged that "the intersection of geopolitical, domestic and trade issues" defines the current impasse between the two sides. Relations between South Africa and the United States have taken a downturn since U.S. President Donald Trump took office in January. Trump indicated that he may skip the Group of 20 Summit, which will be held in November in Johannesburg, the largest city and economic hub of South Africa.

Kota Tinggi police to conduct in-depth probe into UTM Palapes cadet's death

JOHOR BARU, Aug 1 — Police will conduct a thorough investigation into the death of a 22-year-old Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Reserve Officer Training Unit (Palapes) cadet, who died at the Kota Tinggi Hospital, said district police chief Superintendent Yusof Othman. He said the investigation will include recording statements from witnesses and medical officers involved, as part of efforts to identify the cause of the incident. 'The victim's body was taken to the Forensic Medicine Department at Sultan Ismail Hospital (HSI) here for investigation procedures. 'The autopsy did not detect any criminal injuries, and the cause of death is still pending the results of a laboratory report. 'The case has been classified as a sudden death and is being investigated by a Kota Tinggi district police investigating officer,' he said in a statement today. Yusof was responding to the death of Syamsul Haris Shamsudin, a second-semester Bachelor of Cyber Security student at UTM. He was undergoing Palapes training at the Army Combat Training Centre (Pulada) here from June 27 to August 3. Yusof said police received a report on the cadet's death at 5.33pm on July 28. Initial investigations revealed that the victim experienced a seizure and lost control during Combat Inoculation Training at 2.30pm on the same day. 'Upon realising the situation, the victim was taken to Kota Tinggi Hospital by a medical officer but was confirmed dead while being treated at the hospital's emergency zone,' he said. Yusof advised the public not to speculate while investigations are ongoing. Earlier, Syamsul Haris' mother demanded an immediate investigation into her son's death during training. In a statement, UTM said it views the incident seriously and will leave the matter to the police to investigate. The university also pledged full cooperation throughout the investigation process. 'UTM expresses its deep sorrow over the passing of the late Syamsul Haris. We extend our condolences to his family and pray that his soul rests in peace and is placed among the faithful. 'At the same time, the university has contacted the deceased's next of kin and is ready to provide all necessary assistance and support. 'UTM remains committed to prioritising the safety and welfare of its students,' the statement read. Earlier, the deceased's mother, Ummu Haiman Bee Daulatgun, claimed at a press conference in Ipoh, Perak, that her son's cause of death was unclear and suspicious. The 45-year-old single mother said an examination of her son's body during the autopsy revealed severe injuries, which she said did not match the initial explanation that his death was caused by a seizure.
