Cleveland Browns mock draft update: Training camp edition
When we started on this three-round mock draft for the Browns, we had to look at it with an eye on building a team that can eventually compete in the AFC, and didn't look at quarterback as the Browns drafted two of them in the 2025 NFL draft. We aren't sure either is a franchise quarterback, but the team seems committed to seeing what they have in the short term. So, we used three of the four picks on offense, but took a chance at No. 1 overall.
First round - S Caleb Downs - Ohio State
The Browns spent more than a decade playing four games a year against the combo of Troy Polamalu and Ed Reed so they understand the impact a truly elite safety can have. A safety has never gone No. 1 overall, and that might continue, but no one should be shocked if a player of Downs' caliber ends up there.
First round - WR Jordyn Tyson - Arizona State
The best route runner in the draft and a complete receiver who can take over a game. The Browns have cobbled together a very average group of receivers this season and can't expect to compete with this combination of talent.
Second round - DE LT Overton - Alabama
A defense line Cleveland's can never have enough big bodies up front who can rush the passer and stuff the run and Overton is a budding star.
Third round - WR Eric Singleton Jr. - Auburn
We go back to wide receiver here because Singleton is just such an explosive playmaker and a perfect player to pair up with Tyson no matter who is the starting quarterback.

Cardinals training camp: CB Jaden Davis placed on injured reserve with knee injury
Jaden Davis lands on injured reserve with a knee injury along with Star Thomas. The Arizona Cardinals not only lost one cornerback to a knee injury. They lost two. The team announced that it placed both cornerback Star Thomas V and cornerback Jaden Davis on injured reserve on Sunday. Both suffered knee injuries. Thomas suffered a torn ACL on Friday and is done for the season. Davis exited practice on Thursday. Head coach Jonathan Gannon said Davis "has a possibility of possibly coming back" later in the season. Davis, drafted in the seventh round last year out of Miami, still has not played an NFL game. He spent all last season on the practice squad. The Cardinals filled one of the two vacancies created by the moves to IR by signing cornerback Steven Gilmore. Gilmore is the younger brother of five-time Pro Bowl and two-time All-Pro cornerback Stephon Gilmore. 49ers agree to sign CB Eli Apple
The 49ers are adding an experienced veteran to their defense. Cornerback Eli Apple has agreed to a one-year deal with San Francisco, according to agency Universal Sports and Entertainment Management. Apple, 29, signed with the Chargers' practice squad last October and was promoted to the team's active roster last November. He then missed time with a hamstring injury, leading him to appear in just four games in 2024. In 2023, Apple played 10 games with four starts for the Dolphins, recording an interception and nine passes defensed. A Giants first-round pick in 2016, Apple has played 102 career games with 82 starts for the Giants, Saints, Panthers, Bengals, Dolphins, and the Chargers. He's recorded six career interceptions with 61 passes defensed.

Ex-Steelers QB Kenny Pickett injured at Browns training camp
Browns QB Kenny Pickett injured his hamstring near the end of Saturday's practice and is expected to re-evaluate the injury later this week, per sources. Pickett was coming off a strong couple of practices, per sources, and at least for the short term, there now will be more reps… Former Steelers QB Kenny Pickett has suffered an unfortunate hamstring injury at Browns training camp — opening the door for the starting competition to get additional reps. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Pickett suffered his hamstring injury at the end of Saturday's practice — and is set to be re-evaluated later this week. The Steelers traded Pickett to the Eagles last offseason — who then sent him to the Browns, where he's involved in a four-way competition for the starting QB position in Cleveland. Pickett was splitting reps with QBs Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders for the Browns' starting spot — and despite a strong early showing at camp, the ex-Steeler will likely fight an uphill battle for the job while nursing his hamstring. Here's to hoping the former first-rounder can return quickly and earn the role for Cleveland — as the Week 6 revenge game, when the Browns visit Pittsburgh, hinges on Pickett under center.
