Strategic partnership with ‘Engro Corp': Jazz secures all regulatory approvals
The partnership, initially announced on December 5, 2024, is expected to enhance the efficiency of infrastructure and digital investments in the country, in line with Pakistan's digital ambitions.
Under the agreement, Jazz's infrastructure assets, managed through its wholly owned subsidiary Deodar (Private) Limited ("Deodar"), will vest into Engro Connect through a court-sanctioned scheme of arrangement. Regulatory approvals have been obtained from the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP), the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), and the Islamabad High Court. Completion of the transaction is expected in June 2025.

As this strategic partnership nears completion, Jazz will continue to lease Deodar's infrastructure under a long-term agreement, ensuring uninterrupted nationwide connectivity and service for its users. This milestone enables Jazz to fully focus on its ServiceCo vision—scaling digital platforms like JazzCash, Tamasha, SIMOSA, FikrFree, Garaj, and GameNow that serve over 100 million Pakistanis.

‘US-Canada relations'
This is apropos a letter to the Editor from this writer carried by the newspaper yesterday. It is important to note that until recently, the two countries were bound by one of the strongest economic partnerships in the world. In 2024, total goods trade between them reached USD 761.8 billion, with US exports to Canada worth USD 349.9 billion and imports from Canada at USD 411.9 billion. Agriculture alone accounted for USD 28.4 billion in US exports, including nearly USD 800 million in dairy. Canada sent USD 124 billion worth of energy, machinery, and vehicles to the United States, while the USMCA trade agreement favored US dairy producers by granting 3.6 percent tariff-free access to Canada's USD 15 billion dairy market and removing restrictions that had long frustrated American farmers. This trade was not just numbers—it represented communities, livelihoods, and a shared prosperity that outsiders often described as two halves of one whole. That reality began to unravel early in President Trump's second term when he abruptly imposed tariffs on Canadian goods, starting at 10 percent and then climbing to 35 percent, with threats of even higher duties on dairy. In public speeches, he floated the idea of Canada becoming the 'cherished 51st State' of the United States. The comments were not taken lightly in Ottawa. Prime Minister Mark Carney declared that 'Canada is not for sale and will never be the 51st state.' Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described the remarks as humiliating, while Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland called the US actions 'economic warfare.' Flood-hit people of KP: LCCI donates Rs3m
LAHORE: The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry has once again demonstrated its commitment to national solidarity by announcing an emergency relief fund worth Rs. 3 million for the flood-stricken people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Out of this amount, Rs. 2.5 million has been contributed by the Chamber itself, while Rs. 0.5 million has been donated personally by LCCI President Mian Abuzar Shad. LCCI President Mian Abuzar Shad made a heartfelt appeal to Pakistan's business community, philanthropists and welfare organizations to rise above all differences and extend maximum cooperation in this critical hour. 'The devastation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is one of the worst human tragedies in recent history. Entire villages have been washed away, thousands of families have been rendered homeless and our brothers, sisters and innocent children are bearing unimaginable pain,' he said. He added that hundreds of lives have already been lost while countless people are still missing. Those who survived have lost their houses, belongings, livestock and sources of livelihood. 'They are not only deprived of shelter and food but also facing a severe shortage of medicines, clean drinking water and clothing. Their cries for help cannot be ignored,' he stressed. Mian Abuzar Shad said that, under the Rs. 3 million emergency funds, LCCI has earmarked Rs. 1 million for immediate purchase and dispatch of essential medicines. The remaining funds will be utilized to send food items, clothing, tents and other basic necessities to the affected areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He announced that the first consignment of relief goods would be dispatched within a few days under the supervision of LCCI to ensure transparency and timely delivery. The LCCI President said that the Lahore Chamber is not only providing financial aid but also mobilizing its entire network of traders and industrialists to contribute generously in cash and in kind. 'We are determined to collect at least Rs. 10 million in relief assistance, which will be handed over to the provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to help with large-scale rehabilitation efforts,' he added. He said that the Lahore Chamber stands shoulder to shoulder with the victims in their time of distress. 'Their suffering has deeply disturbed us because they are not only Pakistanis but also our Muslim brothers and sisters. Their pain is our pain. Their loss is our loss,' he remarked. Mian Abuzar Shad said that this is not a time for personal, political, or group interests, but a time for unity as a nation. 'If we stand divided, the crisis will multiply. But if we act together, as Pakistanis, we can ease the burden of those who have lost everything to this calamity,' he said. He appealed to the citizens of Lahore, the national business community, philanthropists and overseas Pakistanis to send their donations, zakat and relief goods, including food, medicines, tents, blankets and clothing to the LCCI. He assured that every contribution would be delivered transparently and promptly to the flood victims. The LCCI President said that the business community of Lahore would continue to play its role in every national crisis. 'We are hopeful that with collective efforts and the blessings of Almighty Allah, the affected families will rise again and rebuild their lives.
