Inside the breakdown of Wally Lewis's 36-year marriage - as footy icon's ex-wife and their children boycott his stunning wedding to new love

Daily Mail28-04-2025

While the king of rugby league was all smiles at his second wedding on Saturday, the distinct absence of Wally Lewis's children speak volumes about the family pain that still lingers from his first marriage.
'The King', now 65, tied the knot with Townsville volunteer worker Lynda Adams in a picturesque Brisbane ceremony.
The couple celebrated their vows surrounded by friends and family at the heritage-listed St Mary's Anglican Church in Kangaroo Point.
After the service, guests were transported by coach to a lavish reception at Old Government House in the heart of Brisbane's CBD.
However, Wally's ex Jacqueline and three children - Lincoln, 37, Jamie Lee, 34, and Mitchell, 26 - were conspicuously absent from the celebrations.
The no-shows highlight the ongoing friction, pain and factions that still divide the Lewis family five years after the breakdown of the rugby league Immortal's first marriage.
Lewis married Jacqueline Green in a fairytale ceremony at St John's Cathedral, Brisbane in November 1984.
Their love story began a year earlier when Lewis, already a rising footy star, met Jacqui on Nobbys Beach at the Gold Coast.
Smitten from the start, Lewis courted Jacqui with flowers and invitations until she finally agreed to date him just days before he flew to England to play for Wakefield Trinity.
Sixteen days later, he proposed.
In marrying Lewis, Jacqui took on the role not only of wife but secretary, spokeswoman and media representative, standing beside him during his meteoric rise to become arguably the best rugby league player on the planet.
The couple had three children together - Mitchell, Lincoln and Jamie-Lee.
Mitchell built a career in radio, Lincoln found fame as an actor on Home And Away, while Jamie-Lee excelled in sport after overcoming profound deafness.
Wally's devotion to family was never more evident than in 1991, when he retired from State of Origin footy to prioritise time with his young daughter.
Throughout Wally's health battles, including epilepsy and depression, Jacqui remained a constant and loyal partner.
Lewis and his son Lincoln have reportedly become estranged, with Lincoln in Brisbane at the same time as his father's wedding, but not at the ceremony
The Lewis children have reportedly sided with their mother after it emerged that their father may have been seeing Lynda while still married to Jacquie
In his autobiography Out of the Shadows, Wally praised Jacqui's unwavering support during the darkest moments of his life.
'She's been a wonderful partner to have – through good times and bad, through sickness and health. She's had plenty of all that,' he wrote.
For decades, the Lewis family stood as a symbol of Queensland pride and unity.
However, after 36 years of marriage, Wally and Jacqui quietly separated in 2020.
Channel Nine later confirmed the split in a February 2021 statement, calling it 'a difficult time for everyone in the family'.
'I want to acknowledge the pain and upset my family has gone through since Jacqui and I separated last year. I hope over time we can rebuild,' Lewis said in a public statement.
Shortly after, Wally confirmed he had found love again with Townsville-based volunteer worker and writer, Lynda Adams.
Reports emerged that the new relationship might have begun before his marriage ended, straining family ties further.
Lincoln posted this image to his Instagram account on the same day as his father's wedding, which he did not attend
'Jamie-Lee was mortified when her dad told her he was getting married again – I don't think any of the three kids will ever forgive their dad for hurting their mum,' a close family friend revealed.
Lincoln, Mitchell and Jamie-Lee reportedly chose to side with Jacqui and distanced themselves from their father.
Lincoln, once close with Wally, refused contact following the split.
'We've all banded together, we're a tight family unit. She's got some amazing friends around her,' Lincoln said in 2021.
On the same day as the wedding, Lincoln posted an image to his Instagram account announcing he would be the MC at the Australian Tourism Exchange 2025 at the Brisbane Convention Centre instead of being present at the nuptials.
'Amongst the formalities, it's pretty much where I get to be on stage yapping about how much I love Aus,' he posted.
The next day he was on the Gold Coast for a film festival, watching Star Wars with his nephews.
Jacqui has also sold the family's longtime home in the eastern Brisbane suburb of Birkdale, further symbolising the end of an era.
Lewis's children have been strong supporters of their mother since it was revealed that their father had moved on with Adams
Despite Wally's public insistence that 'there's no family feud', relations remained visibly strained.
In late 2024, Wally proposed to Lynda, planning a tropical Queensland wedding for the following year.
Lynda's daughter Sydney was named part of the wedding party, but Wally's children and grandchildren were not.
'They would see attending their dad's wedding as a real act of betrayal towards their mum,' a source close to the family said.
About 40 guests attended the ceremony, including Lewis's best man and fellow teammate Gene Miles and fellow rugby league great and Channel Nine star Paul 'Fatty' Vautin.
Family insiders say Wally remains 'besotted' with Lynda, but the fallout with his children casts a shadow over the new marriage.
While Jacqui has moved forward, thriving in a new retail career and cherishing time with her grandchildren, sadness lingers over the broken family bonds.
'She's sad for their three kids who barely see their dad, but in many ways she's relieved she can now enjoy a brand new chapter in her life,' a family friend said.
Since the separation, Jacqui has taken overseas trips and found renewed happiness.
Meanwhile, Wally, 65, is confronting serious health challenges, including a probable diagnosis of the deadly brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).
He announced that diagnosis on 60 Minutes in 2023, with the assistance of Lynda.
'There's the big one. I can't even remember the name of what it's called,' Lewis responded.

Northern Ireland defender released after five years with Premier League club

The 27-year-old joined the Magpies from Norwich City in 2020 for a deal worth £15million but found game time limited at St James' Park, featuring just 36 times, 24 of which were starts, and has now been released. Lewis had two loan spells while at Newcastle, spending the 2023/24 season with Watford and then heading to São Paulo last summer, a move that was ultimately cut short when the wing-back suffered an ankle injury on international duty. It appeared that he had been offered a lifeline by Newcastle when he was registered for the second half of the Premier League season, however in a cost-cutting measure the club have cut ties with him. It is believed that Lewis has interest from several Championship teams, with some of his former employers likely to be keen. The Luton-born defender, who qualifies for Northern Ireland through his grandmother, has made 39 appearances in a green shirt since his debut in March 2018. Michael O'Neill opted not to call up Lewis for this month's friendly double-header with Denmark and Iceland.

Home and Away scene sparks major fan theory about how beloved character Irene will leave Summer Bay after 33 years

Home and Away fans are convinced they've cracked the mystery of how one of the show's most beloved characters will make her dramatic exit from Summer Bay. It was announced in February that Lynne McGranger, who has graced screens as Irene Roberts for an astonishing 33 years, is set to bid farewell to the iconic soap. Speaking to TV Tonight, Lynne revealed that when it came to her character's final goodbye, she had the final word. 'I had an idea and they loved it,' she said. Stopping short of divulging any potential spoilers, Lynne said Irene's exit will 'hit home' for fans of the series and said it will be 'very relevant' for a lot of people. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. However after Tuesday night's episode, a flurry of viewers believe they've pieced together the puzzle. One fan took to a popular Facebook group to theorise that Irene could be diagnosed with dementia after displaying concerning signs of memory loss. 'Did anyone notice in last night's episode that when Irene and John were talking about her watch and Irene looked confused and had a brain freeze like she lost her memory?' they posted to the group, sparking a frenzy among die-hard viewers. 'We know that she leaves our screens in August 2025, do you think this is leading to a dementia storyline and leading to her leaving?' The episode in question saw Irene bafflingly being told the same information twice about Roo Stewart (played by Georgie Parker). Adding to the intrigue, John Palmer (played by Shane Withington) queried why Irene had suddenly started wearing her watch again as she had 'stopped wearing that ages ago' and she appeared visibly confused. While the specific storyline has been kept tightly under wraps by Channel Seven, Lynne has hinted at a character-driven narrative. The Facebook post was met with a deluge of comments from eagle-eyed fans who had also noticed the unsettling scenes and said the concept was definitely 'plausible'. 'I was thinking the exact same thing myself, maybe dementia or a brain tumour," one person grimly shared, while another chimed in, 'Exactly what I said to my family last night! Irene was forgetting things!' 'Yes, I caught that too. Very clever and subtle I thought. I'm tipping it's Korsakoff's as well,' a third speculated, with a different user concurring, 'Maybe dementia due to the alcohol abuse.' 'Well picked! Alcohol related dementia, Korsakoff Syndrome. An adult and relatable storyline,' another fan astutely observed. 'This, if it turns out to be true, will open discussions and make people aware that it is just not "silly old people" that suffer from dementia.' However, some loyal viewers are holding out hope for a more uplifting send-off for their beloved Irene, wishing for a happy ending rather than a tragic demise. 'I hope she doesn't die as an exit. She deserves a happy ending,' a fan pleaded, with another commenting, 'I hope she just leaves, she's been through enough. Let her go and retire.' The Logie-nominated actress joined Summer Bay in January 1993. Her character Irene burst onto the small screen as a recovered alcoholic on a mission to turn her life around and reconnect with her daughter Fin (Tina Thomsen). Since then Irene has become an indispensable part of the tight-knit seaside community, famously taking in multiple foster children over the decades. She's been at the epicentre of some of soap's most explosive storylines, including her ongoing battle with alcoholism, a terrifying breast cancer diagnosis, the shocking reveal of a long-lost son, a dramatic ferry boat sinking, a devastating bomb explosion, a horrifying plane crash, and even a stint in prison for a murder she didn't commit.

Media bigwigs 'get into stunning fight with the NRL' over one question about drugs in the game

The once-close relationship between News Corp and the NRL has been fractured with top execs from the media company boycotting the governing body's offer of prime State of Origin tickets in a stoush over drugs in the game, it has been reported. The drama is the result of Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V'landys lashing out at some of the company's publications over a question about drugs that was included in a recent story based on a survey of player agents. NRL stars' representatives were asked, 'Is drug use a problem with players?' with 31 of the 50 respondents answering yes. The story, titled 'The Deal Makers', was published by the Daily Telegraph, Courier Mail, and Code Sports website. V'landys and other members of the NRL's top brass reacted by making angry phone calls to News Corp execs including Telegraph editor Ben English, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. The ARLC boss believed the question gave the false impression that the league has a problem with illicit substances, according to the publication. Broncos star Ezra Mam was also caught with the drug in his system when he seriously injured a young girl in a car accident 'There's no doubt they [the NRL] weren't happy with it, but we 100 per cent stand by it,' English said of the story, adding that the company and the governing body's relationship 'remains strong'. NRL stars have been caught using drugs in a series of high-profile scandals recently. Most notoriously, Broncos five-eighth Ezra Mam was found to have cocaine in his system when he crashed his car into an Uber carrying a mother and her young daughter on October 18 last year. The woman's daughter suffered a broken hip in the incident, which saw Mam fined $850 and disqualified from driving for at least six months. Parramatta Eels winger Josh Addo-Carr was sacked by the Bulldogs on October 31 last year after he tested positive to cocaine during a roadside stop by police in Homebush, western Sydney. He was also given a four-match suspension by the NRL over the scandal, which erupted the week before the Dogs were due to play in the finals series. Addo-Carr denied knowingly taking cocaine. Cronulla Sharks star Braydon Trindall failed a roadside test for drugs and alcohol while driving to training in April last year. The 25-year-old recorded a mid-range alcohol reading of 0/125 during his roadside drug test which also returned a positive reading for recreational drugs.
