Kansas City Chiefs Sr. Director of Player Personnel Mike Bradway on DL Ashton Gillotte
During his press conference over the weekend, Kansas City Chiefs Senior Director of Player Personnel Mike Bradway shared his thoughts on third-round draft pick Ashton Gillotte's ability to pressure quarterbacks with an effective pass rush.
"Yeah, the pressures. Sometimes the sack numbers, I think, can be a little misleading, so hurry rate, pressure rate, you can feel them when you watch the tape, just the activity." said Bradway, "Then, I'll tell you one more thing about him (Ashton Gillotte), he dropped a little weight this spring and his Pro Day was probably one of the better Pro Days we saw all spring. The explosiveness, athleticism (and) movement was like a linebacker, so that kind of sold us on just what kind of physical talent he had."
The former Louisville standout is already connected with the current Chiefs' defensive end, George Karlaftis. Combining both pass rushers with Chris Jones and Charles Omenihu could be a special formula for blitzing coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.
Gillotte spent four seasons at Louisville, appearing in 51 games and recording 131 tackles (73 solo), 40.5 tackles for loss, 26.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries.

Mekhi Becton back at practice for Chargers
There was a positive development for the Chargers offensive line on Tuesday. Reporters at the team's practice shared images of right guard Mekhi Becton in uniform and on the field with his teammates. Becton had missed the last several weeks of practice with an undisclosed injury and there was little indication from the team's coaches about when he'd back. The timing of Becton's return bodes well for the likelihood that he'll be in the lineup in Brazil against the Chiefs on the first Friday of the regular season. The Chargers signed Becton to a two-year contract after he started for the Eagles in their Super Bowl win over Kansas City. Assuming Becton is good to go, the only change to the Chargers' desired starting line will be the absence of left tackle Rashawn Slater. Slater is out for the season with a knee injury, so Joe Alt is moving over from right tackle and Trey Pipkins is in line to start next to Becton.

SEC's longest-tenured coach, Mark Stoops back to rebuilding at Kentucky
Mark Stoops faces his biggest challenge at Kentucky going into his 13th season as the longest-tenured coach in the Southeastern Conference. The Wildcats are coming off a 4-8 record that is their worst since going 2-10 in Stoops' debut season in 2013. Stoops also lost associate head coach Vince Marrow, who had been with him since he came to Kentucky, to in-state rival Louisville in June. Stoops believes he's looked at what went wrong to fix everything. 'We didn't want to just move past it,' Stoops said. 'We had to look at everything, turn over every stone and make sure that we were doing things to the best of our ability. I feel like we've done that.' Stoops has nine starters back. He also went into the transfer portal for 26 more along with 11 incoming freshmen. Stoops' future The coach should be secure at Kentucky with the extension he got in November 2022 enough to keep him around. Stoops hasn't had back-to-back losing seasons since his first three at Kentucky, and he would be due about $37.5 million within two months if officials wanted to make a coaching change. Stoops also likes what Kentucky has done investing in football. He said it feels the Wildcats are on the same playing field as other programs with funding and support for the first time in his tenure. Painful loss Marrow is considered one of the top recruiters in college football. When he left Kentucky, he was Stoops' associate head coach since 2019 and also the recruiting coordinator and NFL liaison. Louisville made him executive director of player personnel and recruiting. When Louisville announced the hiring, Marrow said his ultimate goal is winning a national championship. That's a tough path for Kentucky in the 16-team SEC. New QB Brock Vandagriff retired from football after last season, and Cutter Boley is back after appearing in four games with one start last season. That leaves a big starting job open. Stoops brought in Zach Calzada who led the Football Championship Series with 35 touchdown passes and 3,791 yards passing at Incarnate Word last season. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Calada is 23-9 as a starter, spending 2022 at AUburn and starting his career at Texas A&M. Whoever wins the job will be helped by having three starters back on the offensive line, though Kentucky needs a new starting center and left tackle. The schedule The Wildcats open with Toledo on Aug. 30 followed by two more home games, including No. 21 Mississippi on Sept. 6. The slate gets tough with a trip to No. 13 South Carolina on Sept. 27 and No. 5 Georgia on Oct. 4. Another open date offers a break before hosting top-ranked Texas on Oct. 18 followed by No. 24 Tennessee and Florida is the final SEC home game Nov. 8. Kentucky goes to Auburn on Nov. 1 and Vanderbilt on Nov. 22 before the regular season finale Nov. 29 at Louisville.

The NFL MVP award has crystallized this concept over the past decade, forcing oddsmakers to evolve and leaving foolish bettors throwing good money after bad bets. The saga began in 2018, when Patrick Mahomes took the league by storm in his first full season as the Kansas City Chiefs' starting quarterback. The overnight sensation won the MVP, after having odds in the neighborhood of 100/1 the previous summer. Sure enough, the very next season Lamar Jackson did the exact same thing for the Baltimore Ravens. He, too, began the year with 100/1 odds and ultimately hoisted the award. This outlier two-year stretch disrupted what had become a predictable trend of established quarterbacks. However, normalcy was promptly restored, as Aaron Rodgers then went back-to-back for his third and fourth MVPs in Green Bay. But some bettors are still hoping to catch lightning in a similar bottle this season. DraftKings head oddsmaker Johnny Avello has seen significant action on Justin Fields of the New York Jets (200/1) and Shedeur Sanders of the Cleveland Browns (150/1). 'This is all early money and speculation. It's guys with high odds and people taking a shot,' Avello said. 'They're only taking prices that will be long gone if guys start out well.' I would classify those as reckless wagers and 'dead money'. Now, I might have said the same thing in 2018 and 2019 about the eventual winners, but at least the industry has evolved since then, forming a tighter market. Oddsmakers have learned a great deal about creating odds for awards, which is very different from generating odds for actual games. 'I used to not like it but it's been really good because the odds have become much more sophisticated than they were in the beginning,' said SuperBook VP of Risk Management Ed Salmons, a veteran NFL oddsmaker. 'Just following it for the past eight years, it's easier to do now and it's a staple out there. It's definitely something we book every year, and for the most part, we do pretty well with it.' Essentially, oddsmakers have learned from their mistakes with Mahomes and Jackson. No longer will sportsbooks offer such long odds for a quarterback of a potentially high-powered offense. By comparison, QBs with longshot odds entering the 2025 season include Brock Purdy (25/1), Jared Goff (31/1), and Trevor Lawrence (40/1). The usual suspects are the betting favorites with Jackson leading the way with consensus +500 odds. Reigning MVP Josh Allen, Joe Burrow and Mahomes are right behind at +600, while Jayden Daniels (+850) has entered the mix in just his second season. The shortest odds for any non-quarterback is Saquon Barkley with consensus 50/1 odds. He was a finalist last season with 2,005 rushing yards, the eighth-most in NFL history, but ultimately a quarterback won the MVP for the 12th straight year. Salmons firmly believes a quarterback will win MVP for the rest of time, given how pass-happy the NFL has become over the years. 'All leagues have gravitated toward the same stuff. A kicker (Mark Moseley) won in 1982.
