Italian orienteering athlete Mattia Debertolis, 29, died on Tuesday at the World Games in Chengdu, China, after collapsing during a middle-distance event on August 8 amid intense heat and humidity with temperatures above 30 degrees.
Debertolis was found unconscious during the competition and passed away four days later despite receiving immediate medical attention at a leading Chinese medical facility, according to a joint statement from World Games organisers and the International Orienteering Federation (IOF).
"Despite receiving immediate expert medical care at one of China's leading medical institutions, he passed away," the statement confirmed.
The incident occurred during the final of the men's middle-distance event, approximately 50 kilometers outside central Chengdu. The six-kilometer course featured 180 meters of ascent and 20 control points.
Athletes navigated through crop fields and villages on the rural course, using maps and compasses to reach designated checkpoints in the quickest time possible.
Switzerland's Riccardo Rancan won the event with a time of 45 minutes and 22 seconds.

"I needed to acclimatise quickly with hot and humid conditions. I think I managed quite well," Rancan told Chinese state media.
Debertolis, from Primiero in eastern Italy, was listed among 11 other athletes who did not finish the race. He was ranked 137th in the men's Orienteering World Rankings and had been competing since 2014.
While pursuing his athletic career, Debertolis was also working towards a PhD at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, where he resided.
The World Games, held every four years for sports not included in the Olympics, features approximately 4,000 athletes competing in 253 events. The 12th edition runs until August 17 in Chengdu.
"World Games organisers and the IOF were struck by this tragedy and extend their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the athlete and the whole orienteering community. Our thoughts are with those touched by this event," the joint statement read.
The organisers pledged to "continue to support the family of Mattia Debertolis and the orienteering community in every possible way."

Armand Duplantis defies gravity once again; breaks pole vault world record for the 13th time, clears 6.29m

Sweden's Armand Duplantis, also known as Mondo Duplantis, did it again. The man just cannot stop. The 25-year-old double Olympic and world champion broke the men's pole vault record for the 13th time in his career. This is the third time in 2025 itself that he has registered a new world record. Duplatis cleared 6.29m at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Tuesday. He surpassed his own previous record of 6.28m with his second attempt in Budapest. The athlete from Sweden had first broken the world record in February 2020 as he cleared 6.17m in Poland. At that time, the record was held by France's Renaud Lavillenie. Over the years, Duplantis has come to be known for breaching the record in one-centimetre increments. As soon as he set the world record for the 13th time in his career, Duplantis ran to the crowd to celebrate with his family and partner Desire Inglander. Duplantis will be next competing at the Silesia Diamond League in Poland. At this competition as well, he had broken the world record last year. He is eyeing to become just the second men's athlete after Sergey Bubka to win three successive world outdoor pole vault titles. Bubka, who hails from Ukraine, broke the outdoor world record 17 times and the indoor mark 18 times between 1984 and 1994. At the Paris Olympics 2024, Duplantis had become the first man to retain the Games pole vault title since America's Bob Richards in 1952 and 1956. With Duplantis going past 6.29m, the Swedish athlete has now equalled Sergey Bubka in breaking the world record on most occasions (13). Speaking of the men's pole vault at the Gyulai Istvan Memorial at the Hungarian Grand Prix, Greece's Emmanoiul Karalis finished second with a best attempt of 6.02m, while Australia's Kurtis Marschall claimed third place with an attempt of 5.82m.

England cricketer blocked from promoting OnlyFans in The Hundred

Tymal Mills (Photo by) England fast bowler Tymal Mills has been denied permission by the England and Wales Cricket Board to display his OnlyFans account logo on his bat during The Hundred cricket tournament in August 2025. Mills, who has played 16 T20 internationals and was part of England's 2022 World Cup-winning squad, joined the subscription platform to share content about his life as a professional cricketer. The 33-year-old left-arm fast bowler has not displayed the OnlyFans logo in his two appearances in The Hundred this season. The ECB's decision stems from OnlyFans not aligning with the family-friendly nature of The Hundred tournament. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! When announcing his platform membership, Mills stated: "It's all about sharing my passion with you in a new way." He further emphasized that his channel would give subscribers "a closer, more personal look into life as a professional cricketer." Mills, who holds the record as the leading all-time men's wicket-taker in The Hundred, maintains that the material on his OnlyFans channel is "completely safe." The fast bowler has already made significant contributions in the current tournament, demonstrating his value to the Southern Brave team. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like How Effective Are Non-Surgical Treatments for Aging Skin? OnlyFans operates as an online platform where content creators can share photos, videos, and live streams that subscribers can access through monthly subscriptions, tips, and pay-per-view options. The platform retains approximately 20% of the fees, with creators receiving the remaining 80%. Poll Should sports leagues allow athletes to promote their personal brands on platforms like OnlyFans? Yes, it's their personal choice. No, it conflicts with the league's image. It depends on the content shared. While OnlyFans is widely known for hosting adult content, it is not exclusively dedicated to such material. The platform supports various content creators across different fields and interests. This situation mirrors a similar case from May 2025, where British canoeist Kurts Adams Rozentals faced suspension from competition. Rozentals, who competes in individual canoe slalom, was suspended by Paddle UK following concerns about his social media posts, forcing him to choose between his Olympic aspirations and his OnlyFans account. Mills is reported to understand the ECB's decision regarding the logo display restriction. The ruling reflects the growing intersection between professional sports, personal branding, and content creation platforms, as athletes explore new ways to connect with their audience and diversify their income streams. The ECB's stance emphasizes their commitment to maintaining The Hundred's family-friendly image, even as professional athletes increasingly engage with various social media and content platforms to build their personal brands and connect with fans in new ways. This development occurs as The Hundred continues its mission to attract new audiences to cricket, particularly families and young fans, while balancing the evolving landscape of professional sports and digital content creation.
