GRAEME SOUNESS has backed Russell Martin's no-nonsense decision to axe skipper James Tavernier and Nico Raskin.
Both players were benched for Rangers' crucial Champions League clash with Viktoria Plzen at Ibrox on Tuesday night.

Martin made the bold call after slamming the self-preservation attitude and ego within his dressing room after the weekend 1-1 draw with Motherwell.
And Ibrox legend Souey insists: 'When I was a manager I expected the senior players to be the standard bearers.
'They were the ones that had to set the standards within the dressing room.
'And that's how it should be.
'I'm a great believer that you don't have a successful football club unless you have good senior pros.
'And maybe he's expecting a bit more from some of the senior pros than he got at the weekend.
'And I don't see anything wrong with him digging them out and saying, 'Look, it ain't good enough,' and then taking it forward to the next game and leaving them out.
'I don't see anything wrong with that. It's all on his head. It's his decisions that'll make him successful or not.
'You'd have to say that he's put his foot down pretty quickly.
'And I don't see that as a bad thing.
Rangers star John Souttar opens up on his future as he reveals new contract talks have stalled
'I think you're putting a marker down that 'I have my standards and you're going to have to come up to my standards to be a regular member or a starter in this team.'
'It's not about him dropping his standards to accommodate players.
'A manager has to be the boss, and I think it's never been more difficult for a manager today to do that job than certainly when I was working.
'I always felt Jock Stein was harder on Kenny Dalglish and me with the Scottish team.
'He didn't go after the younger guys and I think the message he was getting across to us was, 'I can pick on these and I can bully them.'
'He did that; I was frightened of him. Although I'm not sure Kenny was! But the message was, 'If I can do that to them, you make sure you're on it.''
Souness - who was at Ibrox for the 3-0 win over Czechs Pzlen - firmly believes his old club is set to be transformed by new owner Andrew Cavanagh and the 49ers enterprises shareholding.
He added: 'I think the new guys have started well. The noises that have come out sound very professional and it's as if they know what they're doing.
'This is not a case of will they get it right. This is a case of when they get it right.
'This is not their first dip into soccer.
'And like in any new business, they will have made some mistakes down in England with Leeds United.
'And I expect them to hit the ground running to a certain point. From what I'm hearing from within the club and how it comes out publicly, I'm very much encouraged.'
Souness sparked a Rangers revival in 1986 when he became Ibrox player-boss in a stunning appointment. Asked if the arrival of Cavenagh was just as significant, he added: 'Yes. 100 percent.
'As I said, these people understand soccer. Do they fully understand what Glasgow Rangers is about?
'I'm sure they have realised that this is a unique football club and a unique football experience.

'It's a very special football club. And working in the west of Scotland is quite unique, trust me!
'But people know what roles they've got within the organisation.
'And I think there's a clear path that's being led from the top. I think everyone now knows their job and they can get on with it.'
'This was always going to happen. There were always going to get people coming in that have the financial muscle and the know-how and an eagerness to understand how it works up here.
'I think it's a good thing having people coming in from outside and starting with a clean piece of paper and saying, 'right, we've done this before, what applies before will apply in Glasgow.'
'There'll be enormous similarities. There'll be a lot of stuff they can back into Rangers.
'And there'll be other things that they'll have to work out for themselves that are quite unique here.'
Graeme Souness was promoting Premier Sports' coverage of Scottish football including over 80 matches from the Scottish Premiership, Premier Sports Cup, Scottish Cup and KDM Evolution Trophy. Fans can watch an entire season of football for only £99 using promo code PSCUP25.

The nominees for the 2025 Ballon d'Or have been announced, with PSG duo Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha leading the 30-player nominations alongside Barcelona starlet Lamine Yamal. PSG's treble-winning season and maiden Champions League win means that members of Luis Enrique's squad dominate the nominations, with 10 players nominated including Dembele, Vitinha and midfield partner Fabian Ruiz and full-back duo Nuno Mendes and Achraf Hakimi. Mo Salah and Cole Palmer headline the Premier League contingent, with the former producing a record-setting season as he led Liverpool to a record-equalling 20th top-flight title while Palmer was instrumental to Chelsea's victorious Club World Cup campaign. The women's award – known as the Ballon d'Or Feminin – is dominated by players belonging to Euros finalists England and Spain, with 10 nominations between the two. The Ballon d'Or ceremonies takes place at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris on 22 September, with the main gongs presented alongside awards for the best young player (known as the Kopa Trophy), the best goalkeeper (the Yashin Trophy) and the best men's and women's coach and clubs. Scotland midfielder McTominay nominated for Ballon d'Or
The Napoli midfielder, 28, is the first Scottish footballer in 38 years to be listed amongst the nominees for the prestigious individual award. Ally McCoist was the last Scot nominated in 1987. McTominay enjoyed a stunning season for Napoli after leaving Manchester United. In his debut season in Italy, McTominay scored 13 goals and provided six assists as Napoli won the Serie A title. The Scotland internationalist scored a bicycle kick on the final day of the season as Napoli won 2-0 against Cagliari to seal the league crown. Read more: McTominay also continued his impressive form for Scotland, playing nine times for the national team in the 2024/25 season. He scored three times for Scotland in that time to take his goal tally to 12 in his 61 outings. To date, only one Scot has ever won the Ballon d'Or, when Denis Law lifted the trophy as the world's best footballer in 1964 after a 46-goal season for Manchester United. Kenny Dalglish was runner-up for the coveted prize in 1983 for his efforts in a double-winning season at Liverpool. Graeme Souness, Gordon Strachan, Jim Baxter, Jimmy Johnstone, Billy Bremner and Steve Archibald have all featured as Ballon d'Or nominees.

Stephen Robinson hails St Mirren stalwarts for helping new arrivals integrate
There have been plenty of comings and goings this summer and the Buddies boss has been grateful to the old guard. Stephen Robinson says having a core squad he can trust has been the backbone of St Mirren's success. This summer, the Buddies have made 11 signings in total – with nine of them being new faces – in a bid to replace the talent which has left the club. Liam Donnelly, Richard King, Ryan Mullen, Jayden Richardson, Jalmaro Calvin, Tunmise Sobowale, Miguel Freckleton, Malik Dijksteel and Shamal George have all entered the building so far, with Killian Phillips and Roland Idowu turning loan moves into permanent switches. But gaffer Robbo says his job integrating the new recruits has been made easier due to the quality core that has been in place for years. The Northern Irishman said: 'Our spine; that core is important, and it's probably something St Mirren haven't been able to do in previous seasons. 'Because you don't know where you're going to finish, you're scrambling to see and you miss out on players. 'We've been fortunate enough to be top six the last three years. We've been able to at least make approaches and try and do business early and target people. 'Also, the most important thing is we've been able to give new contracts out and keep that stability. 'We've got players who have been the backbone of success. The fans get excited about new players. But it's up to those players to prove they can get into the team and try and take the places of players who have done a great job.' A handful of Saints' new signings arrived just days before the start of the new Premiership season. The Buddies opened with a late 1-0 defeat to reigning champions Celtic at Parkhead and welcome Motherwell to the SMiSA Stadium this Saturday. Despite it not being the ideal preparation, Robbo pointed back to the core group who will help him while the new players settle into their surroundings. 'In an ideal world,' he said, 'we'd get them signed and in earlier and I'd have 21 players to select from the start. We didn't have that luxury so now it's a case of people getting an understanding. 'The core of the squad have been very good for me. They will have the chance to stake their claim for the season early on because they are match-ready. 'It will be up to the other boys to break into the team and show they are better than what we've got. That's a challenge – getting better than our starting XI. 'People have to remember we've lost almost half of our starting XI from last year; and those boys are earning eight and nine grand a week now. Ryan [Alebiosu] went for £500,000 [to Blackburn Rovers].' Meanwhile, Saints look set for an idle weekend in a couple of weeks after Rangers' 3-0 first leg win in their Champions League qualifier with Viktoria Plzen. Sky Sports were set to show the visit of Gers at the SMiSA on Sunday August 24 but the Light Blues will request the weekend off to prepare for their play-off with either Club Brugge or Salzburg — barring an almighty collapse in Czechia next week.
