Chicago incubator Male Mogul Initiative acquires loan purveyor to make capital accessible for all
When former NFL player Walter Mendenhall founded the social enterprise Male Mogul Initiative in 2017, his goal was to positively transform the way young men live and lead in their communities and hopefully alter the trajectory of those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Male Mogul has since continued to make an impact and expand its footprint with new business opportunities to not only help young men establish themselves but also help others in the process. The agency has helped thousands of young people in Chicago with professional opportunities and personal growth through mentorship, leadership, entrepreneurship and workforce development programming.
The latest expansion for Male Mogul is the acquisition of California-based financial technology company Helpwithmyloan, known for using AI to simplify and speed up the loan application process for small business owners as well as commercial and residential investments, Mendenhall said.
The Chicago office of Helpwithmyloan, which is operating from Male Mogul's space at 29 E. Madison St., officially launched in February. Helpwithmyloan's two founding partners have stayed on and continue to support the new branch by providing job training for young men through Male Mogul's workforce development programming.
Jeremiah Swint, 25, of Chicago, has been with Male Mogul since June 2024 and offers his expertise in financial literacy through teaching and workshops. He has had a keen interest in all things related to the stock market, trading and economics since he was a child, he said.
Swint is now a loan officer for Helpwithmyloan and said his ability to build relationships and work with people, coupled with his financial savvy, helped him excel at this opportunity.
'I knew I wanted to take this role and be more involved,' Swint said. 'It's amazing being able to get financing to people in an innovative way, to be that first ear to hear them out and seek out people's visions and stories and how they want to mold the financing, and ultimately be able to get it to them.'
He started training in January for the job and will continue to learn as he goes, he said.
A lending platform is 'not a totally new invention,' but what sets Helpwithmyloan apart, Swint said, is that it's a platform that offers innovative guidance with financing.
'Helpwithmyloan is for everyone,' Swint said. 'It's for impact. It's for storytelling. It's for assistance. It's for collaboration.'
Swint said he is 'excited for the success stories and the relationships that we're building and going to build.'
'Relationships are everything to me,' Swint said. 'Money is in relationships, it's not just in work. You have to work and build relationships and then the money comes with the people you impact as well.'
Male Mogul acquired Helpwithmyloan in partnership with Chicago-based financial firm Loyd & Co., which is in charge of operations and the strategic vision for Helpwithmyloan. Male Mogul's role is to help build out the Chicago office of Helpwithmyloan.
Male Mogul's workforce development programming aims to give young men from the South and West sides of Chicago job opportunities by training and mentoring them for specific roles. Mendenhall said most recently they have trained men in their 20s in loan brokering, client management, lender analysis and more with the help of Loyd & Co. and the founding partners of Helpwithmyloan.
Mendenhall said there are about 10 people working for the local office, but the opportunities are 'limitless.'
'We know that there's always going to be the need for access to capital, so the job capabilities are endless and that's what excites us,' Mendenhall said.
He said he hopes to employ over 50 young people over the next few years through Helpwithmyloan.
'We're helping young people find their purpose, helping them identify their gifts and skills and talents while also teaching financial literacy and wealth building,' Mendenhall said.
With any merger and acquisition, there's a 'transition period,' said Mendenhall, a Chicago-area native and a former player for the Philadelphia Eagles, Indianapolis Colts, Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals who pivoted to entrepreneurship and nonprofit administration.
'There's a learning curve, and we've been experiencing that, but we have learned a lot and we have made pivots and gained a lot of experience in a very short amount of time,' Mendenhall said.
Jarryd Loyd, managing partner of Loyd & Co., said he has known Mendenhall for about 20 years and started working with him through Male Mogul early on to help increase workforce development opportunities for Black and brown youth. He said that was done by figuring out the needs of the communities that Male Mogul serves, determining what skill sets are in demand and how to create jobs to meet those needs while employing young people.
Loyd said Helpwithmyloan caught the company's attention because of its ability to provide access to capital efficiently to under-resourced groups not just in Chicago but around the country. The company already had over $850 million in loan deals.
'It's extremely hard for small businesses that don't have traditional collateral to get access to funds, specifically if you're from a disadvantaged demographic,' Loyd said. 'Helpwithmyloan has had a history of providing access to capital to small businesses and commercial real estate investors that usually get denied by banks, and so we saw it as an opportunity to provide additional resources to accelerate that access.'
While the loan process traditionally takes from 60 to 90 days, Loyd said the team behind Helpwithmyloan tries to get it done within 10 to 20 days by using the company's technology to speed up the process, such as giving pre-approval and finding a lender.
Many loan deals are already in the pipeline, he said, and the young people working to get those deals across the finish line are 'excited and earning and seeing the power of helping small business owners access capital,' Mendenhall said.
Male Mogul is also working toward expanding to a 50,000-square-foot warehouse in Englewood to house the Helpwithmyloan office as well as other divisions of Male Mogul, Mendenhall said, while retaining the current space in the Loop.
'What started as an entrepreneurship program has really blossomed into changing young people's lives,' Mendenhall said. 'It's just truly amazing when you have good intentions, when you have a dream, when you want to solve a problem, a major problem, and what you are able to do when you stick with it and you think outside the box.'

The Prompt: Meta Eyes Scale AI
Welcome back to The Prompt. Meta is reportedly planning to acquire a 49% stake in data labelling behemoth Scale AI for $14.8 billion, according to The Information. The deal is slated to place Scale AI's young billionaire CEO Alexandr Wang at a top position inside Meta along with a number of Scale AI employees, who will work in a new AI lab dedicated to developing 'superintelligence'— an AI system that outperforms human capabilities. CEO Mark Zuckerberg is reportedly closely involved in assembling the team of AI researchers and has gone to great lengths like setting up a WhatsApp group called 'Recruiting Party,' personally reaching out to potential recruits and rearranging desks for researchers to sit near him, Bloomberg reported. The new lab is part of Meta's efforts to keep up in the cutthroat AI race while wrangling a string of internal issues including employee churn, management problems and delayed or disappointing product releases. Now let's get into the headlines. DATA DILEMMAS Social media network Reddit sued Anthropic for allegedly training its AI models on personal user data without permission, and continuing to do so despite telling Reddit it had stopped, Forbes reported. Reddit was an early mover in capitalizing on its rich reserve of organic human data catalogued in its discussion forums, striking licensing deals with OpenAI and Google. In a lawsuit filed last week, Reddit claimed Anthropic's bot accessed its servers 100,000 times. BIG PLAYS ChatGPT will now be able to connect to a crop of external applications such as Google Drive, DropBox and Sharepoint, allowing enterprise users to glean insights from internal documents through the chatbot. It will also be able to access meeting recordings and transcriptions. The announcement was the latest in a series of feature releases intended to increase ChatGPT's functionality and keep people engaged. OpenAI has also reached $10 billion in annualized revenue through sales of its consumer products, CNBC reported. AI DEAL OF THE WEEK Young AI coding startup Anysphere has become the face of 'vibe coding' — a phrase coined by OpenAI cofounder Andrej Karpthy describing the use of large language models to create applications when the user doesn't necessarily need to know how to program. The nascent startup has raised $900 million at a $9.9 billion valuation and claims to have about $500 million in annualized revenue. The startup is betting that AI is going to dramatically transform software engineering in the next decade, making it magnitudes easier to program applications while eliminating cumbersome aspects of the process like correcting syntax or or debugging code. All a person has to do is press tab and AI completes the line of code for you and jumps to the next spot. Also of note: Enterprise AI startup Glean raised $150 million in Series F funding at a $7.2 billion valuation. Employees use the company's AI tools to search for internal information and build AI agents (software that can carry out specific tasks end-to-end) that can resolve IT tickets, write performance reviews and help prepare for meetings. Glean claimed to have passed $100 million in annualized revenue in February. (Read our 2023 profile of the company here.) DEEP DIVE Runway AI Throngs of excited moviegoers piled into Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center on Thursday night to be a part of Runway's third annual AI film festival. Cristobal Valenzuela, CEO of the $3.3 billion video and photo generation AI startup, spoke to a crowd of hundreds, asking them to think less about the digital tools and AI software used to make the short films they were about to watch, and instead focus on their human elements. The winning film, Total Pixel Space by Jacob Adler, is a jumble of both realistic and impossible vivid landscapes like a flying pig, people floating in a city or inside a pool, a bloom of jellyfish and a meerkat donning a bright yellow turtleneck. The 9 minute 28 second film raises the question of how many images could possibly exist in the world. The answer: Every image is composed of thousands of pixels— coordinates of positions and colors, a coalition of numbers. The film was selected from 6000 submissions, up from 300 a year ago, as interest in experimenting with AI models has exploded over the years. For all the creative benefits of video generation AI software, TV networks and filmmakers are adopting the technology for a more pragmatic reason: to produce and edit both television shows and movies quickly and more cheaply. AMC Network, which has produced popular shows like Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead, recently announced its plans to use Runway's AI models to create marketing and TV content. Lionsgate, the studio behind blockbuster hits like The Hunger Games and The Twilight Saga, has a partnership with Runway to use its models with a goal of making films on a fraction of the budget. But several studios don't want to openly admit they're using AI due to fears of backlash from creatives, who have voiced their concerns that these AI models are trained on copyrighted data scraped from the internet without consent and compensation. Runway is also currently facing litigation from a group of artists who claim their data was illicitly used to train its AI models. WEEKLY DEMO The Department of Government Efficiency developed a faulty AI tool to review thousands of contracts at the Department of Veteran Affairs that could be cut, labelling them as 'munchable,' Propublica reported. The software, developed by a programmer who has no formal experience in AI, was prone to making errors such as hallucinating the size of contracts, misreading them and inflating their value. MODEL BEHAVIOR Autonomous vehicles became easy targets during protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests in Los Angeles over the weekend. At least five Waymo driverless vehicles that were in the area were vandalized and set ablaze amid the protests. After the incident, Waymo halted its service in parts of downtown LA.

China's Petrochemical Reliance on U.S. Outweighs Rare Earth Trade
US petrochemical producers may have found themselves on the front line of global trade wars, BNEF reports, with China's dependence on the US for feedstocks (see "Chinese Plastics Factories Face Mass Closure As US Ethane Supply Evaporates") blunting the impact of its dominations of exports of rare earth metals. China imported more than 565,000 barrels per day of petrochemical feedstocks from the US in 2024 according to the Energy Information Administration, with a value of over $4.7 billion. That dwarfed the $170 million of rare earths the US imported last year, about 70% of which came from China, according to the US Geological Survey. The figures show the dependence the US and China have developed on each other by ever tightening trade links over the past few decades. While China has a tight grip on refining many metals crucial for industry, it also takes in niche chemicals from the US that are difficult to buy elsewhere. China leans on naphtha to produce most base chemicals, which are processed further to end up in everyday items like electronics and clothing. However, some plants can switch to cheaper propane when the economics make sense, which they do regularly. Propane dehydrogenation plants however can't process alternatives like naphtha. The US accounted for over half of all China's propane imports in 2024. US producers have looked to China to buy their ballooning volumes of feedstock, the market value of which has almost quadrupled since 2020. China accounts for almost half of all new mixed-feed ethylene and propylene production capacity set to come online globally over the next four years, based on data compiled by BloombergNEF. A forced divorce The honeymoon period may be about to end. Following the implementation of tariffs by President Donald Trump's administration in April, China retaliated with its own on US imports — including a 125% tariff on feedstocks like propane and ethane. The duty effectively killed the economics of importing US feedstocks. Alternative sources of propane may be hard or expensive to come by, with producers in the Middle East sending most of their supplies to India, South Korea and Japan. While some rerouting could take place, Middle Eastern players could use the lack of alternatives for China's propane dehydrogenation plants to charge a premium. China's propane dehydrogenation operators, like Hengli Petrochemical, have already suffered from weak margins over the past years. Many may opt to shut their operations temporarily. A messy settlement China moved quickly to remove tariffs on US ethane as trade talks commenced. However, while China seems willing to buy US ethane, the US administration may no longer allow it. Enterprise Products Partners — the largest US-based exporter of petrochemical feedstocks — received a notice on Wednesday from the Bureau of Industry and Security at the US Department of Commerce, denying licenses to export ethane to China on the basis that such flows 'pose an unacceptable risk of use in or diversion to a 'military end use' in China.' Energy Transfer received a similar communication. China's ethane cracking capacity is dwarfed by its capacity to process naphtha and propane, but almost all of its ethane imports come from the US. The restrictions will have a significant impact on the Lianyungang and Tianjin plants, owned by Satellite Chemical, Sinopec and INEOS. SP Chemicals, a Singapore-based producer, sources most of its feedstock from Enterprise Products Partners. As the trade war continues, it appears commodities may lead the confrontation, with players on both sides set to feel the pain. By More Top Reads From this article on

John Schumacher, Headed I. Magnin, Bonwit Teller, Dies at 94
John Schumacher, former chief executive officer of Bonwit Teller and president of I. Magnin in the 1970s, died early Friday evening at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach. Schumacher was 94. According to his wife Barbara Cirkva, the former division president of fashion, watches and fine jewelry for Chanel, the cause of her husband's death is to be determined, but for the past several months he had been losing weight and stopped leaving his home. More from WWD Paolo Boffi Dies at 85 Roslyn S. Jaffe, the Revered Dressbarn Cofounder Who Empowered Women, Dies at 96 Beloved Footwear Executive Sonny Shar Dies at 86 'He was feisty. He lived well and was fun to be with,' Cirkva told WWD. 'John loved to go out and socialize, but when he didn't feel he could anymore, he just didn't want to.' Schumacher's career in retailing began at Lord & Taylor as a service manager in the millinery department and later a footwear buyer. 'He always liked to tell people that he started as a slipper buyer,' Cirkva recalled. 'I knew John since his I. Magnin days, when I was working at Neiman Marcus. I'd see him at all the fashion shows in Europe and New York,' said Neal Fox, former CEO of Mark Cross, Sulka, and the Garfinckel's and Raleigh's store chains. 'John was an interesting guy. He had this definite flair. He was most interested in restaurants and travel.' In fact, he encouraged Fox and his wife Martha to visit Capri, Italy, essentially introducing the couple to the island. 'The first time we went, we all stayed at the same hotel.' Schumacher had a meteoric retail career, quickly climbing the ranks of Lord & Taylor to senior vice president and general merchandise manager before joining the San Francisco-based I. Magnin, first as executive vice president before becoming president. 'It was an interesting time in fashion,' said Sonja Caproni, who was a buyer and later fashion director at I. Magnin working with Schumacher. Designers were emerging and Saint Laurent was very established, but not at I. Magnin until Schumacher felt it was important to include the French designer in the mix. 'Saint Laurent instantly became a huge business for us, and John had us opening boutiques,' in various I. Magnin stores including Los Angeles, Chicago and San Francisco. 'John was quick to respond to things,' Caproni said. 'He was very determined and competitive but for the right reasons. He always kept the store first and foremost in mind. He wanted I. Magnin to be the best on the West Coast, and I'm sure he mentored a lot of people along the way.' Eventually, Schumacher was recruited to become chairman and CEO of Bonwit Teller in New York by the store's parent company Genesco. During his tenure at Bonwit's, Schumacher improved the store's profitability and sales and kept a tight rein on expenses while also spending to renovate stores and install designer shops for a boutique-like ambience. However, after two years on the job, he was ousted over allegations by Genesco that he misused company funds for personal use. Bonwit Teller, I. Magnin and Lord & Taylor are no longer in business. After his abrupt departure from retail, Schumacher joined M. Ferrari, a maker of Italian women's clothes. A gourmet cook, he left the retail/fashion industry to become a restaurateur, launching La Colonna on 19th Street in Manhattan in the mid-1980s. 'John wanted the restaurant to be as Italian as it could be,' Cirkva said. 'He brought over from Italy the chefs and sous chefs and found them apartments near the restaurant.' She said he also hired Italian artists to paint the walls of the La Colonna. They used the eruption of Mount Vesuvius as the motif and also got 'playful,' as Cirkva recalled, with some depictions of the erotica lifestyle of ancient Pompeii. Schumacher's next restaurant venture was Q.V. on 63rd Street. In yet another business venture, Schumacher and Cirkva became co-owners of a gardens antique shop in Mount Kisco, N.Y., called Fleur. Schumacher's body will be cremated and his ashes flown to New York, where Cirkva plans to hold a reception honoring her husband, most likely in September, she said. In addition to his wife, Schumacher is survived by three daughters: Victoria Schumacher, Lisa Sumner and Pamela Schumacher; a grandson Christopher Dungan, and a sister, Carol Dougherty.
