'Namazwadi, Not Samajwadi'- BJP Fires Salvo at RJD MP Tejashwi Yadav Over Waqf Act ‘Dustbin' Remark

Time of India17 hours ago

BJP has accused RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav of disrespecting the Constitution and appeasing communal politics. BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi slammed Tejashwi's controversial vow to "throw the Waqf Act into the dustbin" if the INDIA bloc comes to power, calling it a dangerous attempt to impose 'Namazwad' in place of 'Samajwad'. The BJP alleges that opposition parties are undermining Ambedkar's Constitution by putting Sharia above parliamentary law, and doing so to chase vote-bank politics. Tejashwi's remarks have triggered national outrage, with the BJP questioning if the INDIA bloc is ready to override judicial and legislative processes.#waqfact #tejashwiyadav #bjpvsrjd #namazvad #biharelections #rjdcontroversy #sudhanshutrivedi #waqfcontroversy #bjpattack #sharialaw #toi #toibharat #bharat #breakingnews #indianews

Calcutta HC orders CBI probe into 3 BJP workers' murder in Sandeshkhali

Six years after three Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers were allegedly killed and their bodies mutilated in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas, the Calcutta High Court on Monday ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe. Justice Joy Sengupta directed that the CBI's Joint Director lead the investigation, with progress monitored by the trial court. In June 2019, BJP workers Pradeep Mondal, Devdas Mondal and Sukanta Mondal were found dead. Their families, Supriya Mondal and Padma Mondal, filed two FIRs, and the state CID initially handled the case. Sheikh Shahjahan, a prime accused, was later dropped from both charge sheets, according to the victims' relatives. On January 8 last year, backed by Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, the families returned to the High Court, seeking a CBI probe. Shahjahan has been in judicial custody since his arrest on January 5, 2024, following an alleged assault on ED officers during a raid at his Sandeshkhali home. His bail plea is pending before the High Court. Locals, especially women, have long protested Shahjahan's influence, accusing him and his associates of land grabs, forced fish pond construction on occupied fields and harassment of residents. Opposition parties, including the BJP, staged demonstrations in response to these allegations. In June 2019, three BJP-affiliated workers were found murdered in Sandeshkhali (North 24 Parganas) amid violent street clashes between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the BJP. Investigators initially linked the killings to local TMC strongman Sheikh Shahjahan, but the state CID later removed his name from the chargesheet. The families alleged police inaction on a 2019 FIR that named Shahjahan. They even sought court protection and a CBI probe. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari said the victims' relatives feared reprisals and were placed in a police safe house for protection.

‘President Trump-PM Modi ties strong, US-India trade deal announcement soon': White House

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt described India as a 'strategic ally' in the Indo-Pacific region during a press briefing on Monday (US local time) while addressing a question on the India-US trade agreement, she added that President Donald Trump shares a "very good relationship" with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and noted that the trade deal is close to completion. US President Donald Trump (R) and PM Narendra Modi during a news conference in the East Room of the White House in Washington DC. (File)(Bloomberg) 'Yes, the President said that last week (that the US and India are very close to a trade deal), and it remains true. I just spoke to our Secretary of Commerce about it. He was in the Oval Office with the President. They are finalising these agreements, and you'll hear from the President and his trade team very soon when it comes to India,' ANI news agency quoted her as saying. Responding to a question regarding China's role in the Indo-Pacific, Leavitt reiterated, 'India remains a very strategic ally in the Asia Pacific and the President has a very good relationship with Prime Minister Modi, and he will continue to have that.' Her remarks come as External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is currently visiting the United States to participate in the QUAD Foreign Ministers' Meeting. The QUAD, consisting of Australia, India, Japan, and the US, is focused on promoting a free, open, and resilient Indo-Pacific. The alliance began as a coordinated humanitarian response following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Meanwhile, it was earlier confirmed on June 18 that US President Donald Trump accepted PM Modi's invitation to attend the upcoming QUAD Summit in New Delhi. "For the next meeting of QUAD, PM Modi invited President Trump to India. While accepting the invitation, President Trump said that he is excited to come to India," Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said in a video message. India-US trade talks On June 26, India and the US began another round of bilateral trade talks aimed at finalising an early harvest deal before the US imposes country-specific reciprocal tariffs on imports from 57 countries, including India, starting July 9, according to people familiar with the discussions. Led by chief negotiator and special secretary for commerce Rajesh Agrawal, the Indian delegation arrived in Washington for a two-day round of talks beginning last week. The main goal of this round is to address existing trade disputes and reach an interim agreement that could form the basis for the first phase of a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) by September or October 2025. After this initial phase, both sides are expected to begin negotiations for a full-fledged free trade agreement (FTA) with the aim of doubling bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030. India is pushing for the US to roll back all current and planned retaliatory tariffs, including a 26% reciprocal tariff – comprising a 10% duty that took effect on April 5 and an additional 16% set to begin from July 9. Sources involved in the talks said most of the elements of a preliminary agreement have been ironed out by negotiators, but final decisions now rest with the political leadership to resolve a few remaining differences. Two major sticking points continue to hold up the deal, they added. India is also urging the US to eliminate safeguard duties – currently being challenged at the World Trade Organisation – such as the 50% tariffs on steel and aluminium and the 25% duties on automobiles and auto parts. In return, India expects Washington to lower its most favoured nation (MFN) tariffs proportionately.

Uddhav Thackeray calls for Opposition's unity against public security bill

Mumbai: After opposing the Mahayuti government's order to make Hindi the third language in schools, which was eventually revoked on Sunday, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray has turned his focus towards the controversial Maharashtra Special Public Security Bill, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of branding anyone who opposes it as 'anti-national' and 'urban naxal'. (Photo by HT) The Shiv Sena (UBT) chief on Monday participated in a protest against the bill at Azad Maidan, organised by left-wing parties such as the Peasants and Workers Party of India (PWP), the Communist Party of India (CPI), and the CPI (Marxist). Addressing a crowd of hundreds of people, he said that the draft of the bill has provisions for stringent action to suppress dissident voices, and urged the Opposition to maintain unity in its fight against the proposed law. The Maharashtra government is likely to present the controversial Maharashtra Special Public Security Bill, 2024, in the monsoon session of the state legislature, which began on Monday. A joint select committee of the state legislature has finalised a revised draft of the bill after amending key provisions following strong criticism from civil society and watchdog bodies, who claimed it could be misused by the state to silence dissent and target entities critical of the government. The statement of objectives of the revised draft now states that the bill aims to curb 'urban naxal' activities, specifically 'unlawful activities by radical leftist organisations', rather than the earlier 'unlawful activities', by any person or organisation. At Monday's rally, Thackeray slammed the BJP for calling anyone who criticised its policy anti-national or urban naxal. 'For the BJP, the leaders whom it accuses of corruption or having relations with anti-nationals suddenly become patriotic once they join the BJP. But if someone speaks against the BJP, they call them anti-national and urban naxal,' he said. Thackeray also announced that his party would vote against the bill in the state legislature and expressed the need for the Opposition to be united while opposing the BJP despite its huge majority in the state legislature. 'Unity of all is important. We saw [on Sunday] how the BJP government was forced to revoke the order regarding making Hindi compulsory [in schools] due to the unity of the Marathi manoos (people). Though the Opposition parties will oppose the bill in the legislature, with the help of a huge majority, the BJP government will pass it. Even after that, we need to unite against the government to fight the battle against the bill,' he said. Also present at the rally were Nationalist Congress Party (SP) MP Supriya Sule, state president Jayant Patil, and MLA Jitendra Awhad, who announced their opposition to the bill as well. Sule concurred with Thackeray that the Opposition should unite and be ready to oppose the proposed law, adding that she would be on the forefront if there's a need to go to jail over it. NCP (SP) state president Jayant Patil, who was in the committee that revised the draft for the bill, said the panel had suggested important changes. However, whether or not the Mahayuti government has accepted the changes will be revealed only after it presents the bill in the state legislature, he added.
