Darren Waller, former Giants TE, coming out of retirement to join Dolphins
By Mike Jones, Jayna Bardahl and Charlotte Carroll One year after announcing his retirement from the NFL, tight end Darren Waller is returning to the league with the Miami Dolphins, a league source said Tuesday. Because Waller was still under contract — he retired with three years remaining on his deal with the New York Giants — the Dolphins are trading a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Giants for Waller and a 2027 conditional seventh-round pick, per multiple reports. Waller has agreed to a new contract with Miami for one year worth up to $5 million, according to reports. Advertisement When he retired last June, Waller described it as 'an opportunity to take back the power in my life and start to make choices for myself.' A sixth-round pick by the Baltimore Ravens in 2015, his eight NFL seasons were marred by injury and other issues. While with the Baltimore Ravens, he was suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy. He was suspended for the entire 2017 season for violating it again. Waller then spent five seasons with the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders, which included his Pro Bowl campaign in 2020. He signed a three-year, $51 million extension with the Raiders in 2022 that, at the time, made him the highest-paid tight end in the league. The Raiders traded him to the Giants in March 2023 for a late third-round pick, but he never shaped up to be the offensive playmaker New York needed. Waller suffered a hamstring injury in Week 8 of the 2023 season and finished with 52 catches for 552 yards and one touchdown. Waller's acquisition is another significant roster development made by the Dolphins this week. On Monday, Miami traded defensive back Jalen Ramsey, tight end Jonnu Smith and a 2027 seventh-round draft pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and a 2027 fifth-round draft pick. Waller could fill the gap left by the departure of Smith, a 2024 Pro Bowler. Waller returns to the game after a year away. Five seasons ago, he ranked among the most productive tight ends in the game, recording 107 catches for 1,196 yards and nine touchdowns in 2020 with the Raiders. The year prior, he recorded 90 catches for 1,145 yards and three touchdowns. He'll have some rust to knock off, but now fully healthy, Waller has a chance to contribute in an offense run by the highly creative Mike McDaniel. Plenty of play-making opportunities should present themselves with defenses keying on wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. The move that sent a late third-round pick to Las Vegas in exchange for Waller was viewed as a low-risk, high-reward deal that could give then-quarterback Daniel Jones a reliable veteran. But despite the potential of that duo on display in training camp, Waller's injury history showed up before the season started. Waller missed five games for New York in 2023, and his potential retirement then hung over the Giants' 2024 offseason before he made his decision last summer. New York didn't hang all its hopes on Waller, though, signing Chris Manhertz in free agency and drafting fourth-rounder Theo Johnson that offseason to pair with Daniel Bellinger. The Giants have further supplemented the room by drafting seventh-rounder Thomas Fidone II this year. Dallas Stars hire Edmonton Oilers assistant Glen Gulutzan as coach, his second stint with the team
FRISCO, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Stars have hired Glen Gulutzan as their head coach 12 years after he was fired from his first stint with them. General manager Jim Nill announced the move Tuesday, with Gulutzan succeeding Peter DeBoer, who was fired following the team's playoff elimination in the Western Conference final. Back in 2013, firing Gulutzan was one of Nill's first act when he took over. Gulutzan, who turns 54 in August, returns to Dallas after spending the past seven seasons as an assistant with the Edmonton Oilers, including the past two that ended with trips to the Stanley Cup Final. This is his third job in charge of an NHL team after leading the Stars from 2011-13 and the Calgary Flames from 2016-18. Oilers GM Stan Bowman hinted at the hire at his season-ending news conference by saying he didn't want to announce anything regarding Gulutzan. ___ AP NHL:
