No NBA games for Boston Celtics on opening night, Christmas Day

USA Today16 hours ago
For the first time in more than a decade, the Boston Celtics will not play on opening night or on Christmas Day. The Celtics have long been a staple of the NBA fare on offer on December 25, and their success in the last ten years has had them selected by the league to play most of the games played on the first day of the season as well.
But with star Boston forward Jayson Tatum sitting out much if not all of the 2025-26 regular season, the league has elected to pass the Celtics by for both marquee dates this year. In their place, the NBA has announced via Shams Charania a compelling slate of games that, for all their gravitas, won't hit quite the same for Boston fans.
For opening night, the games will feature a smaller lineup of contests as tends to be the case, with the Houston Rockets at the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Golden State Warriors at the Los Angeles Lakers.
Christmas Day will continue to be the marquee date of the regular season, featuring a slate of five contests based mostly in the league's West. The sole East contest includes the Cleveland Cavaliers at the New York Knicks.
In the Western Conference, we have the San Antonio Spurs at the Thunder, the Rockets at the Lakers, the Dallas Mavericks at the Warriors, and the Minnesota Timberwolves at the Denver Nuggets.

Report: Warriors to host Klay Thompson, Dallas Mavericks on Christmas day

After a slow offseason, our first glimpse at what the 2025-26 NBA regular season schedule is beginning to leak, starting with the always highly-anticipated Christmas Day games. For the 13th straight time, Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors will headline a stacked Christmas Day slate. In the 2025 edition of the NBA's Christmas Day festivities, the Warriors will reportedly host a familiar face at Chase Center in San Francisco. According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the Warriors will host Klay Thompson, Anthony Davis, 2025 No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg and the Dallas Mavericks. The game will be broadcast nationally on ABC and ESPN on Dec. 25 from San Francisco. After 11 seasons with the Warriors, Thompson joined the Mavericks last offseason. In his first return to Chase Center last season, the veteran sharpshooter tallied 22 points on 7-of-17 shooting from the field with six made 3-pointers in a losing effort against the Warriors, 120-117. In four contests against the Warriors, Thompson registered double-figure scoring efforts in each game, including a 29-point outburst in December. In his first season with the Mavericks, Thompson averaged 14 points on 41.2% shooting from the field and 39.1% from beyond the arc to go along with 3.4 rebounds and two assists in 72 games. In 2024, the Warriors dropped their Christmas Day tilt to the Los Angeles Lakers, 115-113. This post originally appeared on Warriors Wire! Follow us on Facebook and Twitter!

Red Sox Urged to Address Starting Rotation as Top Priority in Offseason

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Boston Red Sox pursued a variety of starting pitchers at the trade deadline but were ultimately unable to reach a deal for pitchers such as Joe Ryan or Zac Gallen. Boston's inability to land a starting pitcher frustrated the fanbase as the rotation has a major drop-off behind Garrett Crochet. Brayan Bello is still developing, so the team can't quite count on him yet. It's why BoSox Injection writer Daniel Feininger believes pitching should be one of the team's priorities in the offseason. BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS - AUGUST 05: Garrett Crochet #35 of the Boston Red Sox reacts after striking out Luke Maile (not seen) of the Kansas City Royals during the seventh inning at Fenway Park on August 05, 2025 in Boston, Massachusetts. More"Behind Garrett Crochet, there's little in the way of scary mound presence in Boston's rotation," wrote Feininger. "The trade deadline was filled with rumors of quality pitching help coming to Fenway, including names like Minnesota's Joe Ryan and Sandy Alcantara of the Marlins. Rental options for the remainder of 2025 like Merrill Kelly, who was dealt by the Diamondbacks and Zac Gallen (who wasn't moved) will be available in free agency at the season's end." The Red Sox know adding a starting pitcher is vital to success next season and beyond. Dustin May has been a major disappointment since being acquired at the trade deadline. The organization could also elect to grab a starting pitcher via trade and following the plan it used to get Crochet. "Nabbing Crochet and then promptly extending him has turned into a massive victory, making Boston significantly better," wrote Feininger. "The Red Sox will need a similar level of aggression this winter to continue improving a pitching squad that has shown flashes of dominance but plenty of weakness over the past few seasons." If the rest of the regular season and postseason don't go to plan for the Red Sox, the lack of legitimate starting pitchers will be a major reason. Boston knows Crochet needs help in the rotation. Bruins Get Great News About Important Defenseman

Boston Bruins defenseman Hampus Lindholm missed a significant portion of this past season due to a fractured kneecap he suffered against the St. Louis Blues on Nov. 12. While he worked hard to try to return, he was unable to get back into game action before the 2024-25 season was complete. With this, he played in just 17 games this past season for the Bruins, where he had three goals, four assists, and seven points. There is no question that the Bruins missed Lindholm tremendously this past season, and his absence from their blueline undoubtedly played a role in their nightmare 2024-25 season. However, Lindholm has now provided an exciting update about his injury recovery. While speaking with the Boston Globe's Kevin Paul Dupont, Lindholm shared that he is fully healed and is good to go for the start of training camp. This is certainly excellent news for the Bruins, as Lindholm is their top left-shot defenseman, and their blueline is far better when he is healthy because of it. Thus, it is significant that he is ready to return to the ice for training camp. This will also give him plenty of time to shake off the rust after missing most of last season due to his injury. With the Bruins looking to have a bounce-back season, they are going to need their important players to stay healthy. Thus, getting Lindholm back is major news for the Original Six club, and it will be fascinating to see how much of an impact he can make next season from here. Where New Bruins Should Fit In Lineup After a disappointing 2024-25 season, the expectation was that the Boston Bruins would look to make changes to their roster this summer. It is fair to say that they did just that, as they brought in an array of new players this off-season, as they continue their retool.
