BBC News17-03-2025

Six men are under arrest after a fight with weapons including knives and hammers broke out on a city's streets, police have said. The disorder occurred at about 01:45 GMT on Wilmslow Road in Rusholme, Manchester, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said. Each of the six men, aged between 18 and 24, was arrested on suspicion of affray after the fight, in which they suffered serious injuries. Detective Inspector Mark Astbury of GMP said the incident took place in a busy area, "showing an unacceptable disregard for the safety of the community".
Officers have cordoned off parts of Park Crescent, Kent Road West and Denison Road to investigate the scene. Though serious, the six men's injuries were "not believed to be life-changing or life-threatening", a GMP spokesman said. Det Insp Astbury said the force believed the incident was a "targeted attack". He said: "We do not underestimate the impact this will have on the local community."Fortunately, no further injuries have been reported to us, and we were able to arrest those who we believe to be involved immediately."Anyone with information about the incident, including CCTV and dashcam footage, has been urged to contact police.

Teenager who deliberately ran over police officer in Cheadle detained for 31 months

A teenager who deliberately ran over a police officer and then "cowardly" fled the scene has been detained for 31 months. Harvey Bell, 19, drove at PC Tracy Hallworth, knocking her to the ground, before running over her legs. The uniformed officer from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) and a male colleague had responded to reports that four men were taking drugs in a black Audi at Sainsbury's car park on Wilmslow Road, Cheadle at about 11.30pm on 25 January. But as officers approached the car, Bell reversed the Audi a short distance away before PC Hallworth stood two metres in front of the vehicle and ordered him to stop. Prosecutor Sacha Waxman told Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court that Bell ignored the officer and accelerated forward. PC Hallworth, 54, suffered a dislocated kneecap and a wound to her wrist and was taken to hospital after she lost consciousness at the scene. She was off work for a fortnight and although she had recovered from her physical injuries the psychological impact remains, the court heard. Reading out her victim personal statement in court, PC Hallworth said: 'Bell drove off not knowing if I was dead or alive. "It haunts me that if I fell the other way he would have gone over my head and I might not be here. 'I will never forgive Bell for the upset he caused my family. What he did to me is permanently in the back of my mind on every job I go to. 'Thanks to the support of my family and my GMP family, Bell has not been able to take away the thing I love most, my job as a police officer. 'An attack on a police officer is an attack on us all.' Bell, of previous good character, was said by his barrister, Rebecca Penfold to have expressed his 'significant remorse'. He pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to causing serious injury by dangerous driving. However, Judge Jenny Lester-Ashworth noted that assertion was 'at odds' with his pre-sentence report which said he felt a 'sense of injustice' that he had been held on remand in custody since he handed himself in the following day. She told the defendant: 'You must have known you had hit her, but you cowardly left the scene. 'You could have killed her.' Bell, from Knutsford, Cheshire will serve his sentence in a Young Offender Institution and has been banned from driving for two years and ordered to take an extended retest. Following sentencing, Victoria Agullo, senior crown prosecutor for CPS North West, said: 'Assaults against frontline officers are totally unacceptable and today's sentence for Harvey Bell should leave those who would use a car as a weapon in no doubt that they will face the full force of the law.'

Five men arrested as detectives investigate historic child sexual exploitation in Oldham

Five men have been arrested following a series of police raids as part of a major investigation into historic child sexual exploitation (CSE). The suspects, aged between 37 and 54, were detained on Wednesday morning, 4 June, during warrants executed at properties across Oldham, Tameside and Manchester. The men were arrested on suspicion of rape and remain in custody for questioning. The arrests are linked to alleged grooming and abuse that took place between 2011 and 2014 and form part of Greater Manchester Police 's (GMP) ongoing Operation Sherwood – "a complex and wide-ranging" investigation supported by Oldham Council. GMP have said the cases currently involve four survivors, one of whom recently came forward which prompted the morning raids. Officers from GMP's CSE Major Incident Team have been working closely with the survivors, gathering evidence and intelligence to build a strong foundation for potential prosecutions. Assistant Chief Constable Steph Parker, GMP's lead for Protecting Vulnerable People, said: "The survivors at the centre of these cases have placed their trust in the GMP of today and have the confidence to support prosecutions, which we hold to the highest regard. "Our investigative teams are piecing together all the evidence and taking robust action as soon as we can. "Bringing child abusers to justice is why our detectives work so tirelessly day-in, day-out. It's essential we get this right.' Six other people had already been arrested as part of Operation Sherwood in earlier stages of the investigation. Those suspects have since been released on bail under strict child protection conditions while enquiries continue. GMP confirmed that while the latest group of suspects are not all believed to be directly linked, their arrests relate to ongoing support provided to multiple survivors. In a post shared on X, GMP said: "We've arrested a number of suspected child sex offenders this morning as part of an ongoing specialist GMP investigation."The action relates to alleged grooming in Oldham between 2011 and 2014. The victim supporting today's action continues to be kept updated. "Time will be no barrier to getting justice for victims of child sexual exploitation.'
