Euro 2025: Portugal stays alive after 89th-minute goal in draw with Italy
The result sent Spain into the quarterfinals from Group B after its earlier 6-2 rout of Belgium which was eliminated from contention.
Italy was joining Spain in the quarterfinals with a lead taken in the 70th on captain Cristiana Girelli's high-class curling shot from 20 meters.
Portugal seemed to have a lifeline in the 80th but Diana Silva's goal was ruled out for an offside spotted after a two-minute video review.
Then Portugal was denied by the crossbar in the 89th when Carole Costa's firm header came back off into play, before the ball was recycled for Gomes to earn a crucial point.
Portugal defender Ana Borges was sent off deep into stoppage time.
Italy is still favored to advance, moving up to four points in the group standings. That is three clear of Portugal but also six better in goal difference which is now the tiebreaker between the two.
In Friday's final round, Italy plays Spain and Portugal faces Belgium.

Cards activate Iván Herrera from 10-day injured list, place Lars Nootbaar on IL
ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals activated Iván Herrera from the 10-day injured list on Sunday before the series finale against the Atlanta Braves. In a corresponding move, the Cardinals placed outfielder Lars Nootbaar on the 10-day IL with a left rib injury. Herrera hasn't appeared in the lineup since June 19 when he strained his hamstring rounding first base after a hit in the first game of a doubleheader against the Chicago White Sox. Herrera, who missed time earlier this season with a knee issue, is hitting .320 with eight homers and 36 RBIs. He has played in 42 games this year. He was in the lineup Sunday as the designated hitter. Nootbaar left Saturday's game in the sixth inning and did not return. Nootbaar has battled rib pain and an intercostal strain for several weeks. He is batting .227 with 12 home runs and 37 RBIs. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. ___ AP MLB:

Yankees right-hander Luis Gil pitches 3 1/3 innings in a rehab start with Double-A Somerset
BRIDGEWATER, N.J. (AP) — New York Yankees right-hander Luis Gil struck out six in 3 1/3 innings in a rehab start with Double-A Somerset on Sunday. The 27-year-old Gil allowed one run on Charles McAdoo's leadoff homer for New Hampshire in the fourth. He walked one while throwing 50 pitches, 36 for strikes. Gil has been sidelined since spring training because of a right lat strain. He had to delay the beginning of his throwing program in April because the injury was healing slowly. The return of Gil could provide a big lift for New York's depleted rotation. Gerrit Cole and Clarke Schmidt are out for the season because of elbow injuries. Gil was the AL Rookie of the Year in 2024. He went 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA in 29 starts for the AL East champions, striking out 171 and walking a major league-high 77 in 151 2/3 innings. Gil stopped a bullpen session on Feb. 28 because of tightness in his pitching shoulder. He went to New York for a second MRI that revealed a high-grade lat strain.
