UAE: Why today's CFOs need to go beyond balance sheets, crunching numbers

A company's Chief Financial Officer (CFO) should not just focus on balance sheets and numbers but also act as a catalyst connecting strategy with execution and driving results.
With artificial intelligence and technological advancements powering the workplace forward, it has become more important than ever for CFOs to stay close to their teams and listen to them carefully.
That's according to Dr Alida Helena Scholtz, CFO of Ras Al Khaimah Economic Zone (RAKEZ). 'There are three things you must be known for,' she said, addressing a room full of CFOs and other senior financial professionals. 'You're the co-pilot to the CEO, you must be the change agent driving digital transformation, and thirdly, you have to be the steward of the integrated value of the organisation.'
Dr Alida shared an example of how she had achieved substantial results in her role. 'We had a two-year vision at RAKEZ,' she said. 'In the 18 months I worked there, we went from managing 14,000 companies to, I think this morning, 35,732 companies in our portfolio. We operationalised that by connecting the teams. We put in place cross-functional teams, cross-functional expertise, financial education, continuous member coaching, and alignment across the organisation.'
She was speaking on a panel at the New Age Finance and Accounting (NAFA) Summit organised by Khaleej Times, which brought together some of the most prominent CFOs, finance leaders, policymakers, and fintech innovators. The sixth edition of the event, held at the Jumeirah Emirates Towers on Wednesday, saw thought-provoking dialogue on regulation, tax, ESG, and financial leadership.
Thomas Teo, CFO of Jameel Motors, agreed with her and added that he has observed several commonalities throughout his career spanning over seven countries across various continents. 'Working in every single country, the answer is four letters – NICE,' he said.
'It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice. You need to treat people the way they want to be treated — with respect and trust. To be a strategic CFO, my mandate is always to talk to the team: find out who they are, what their strengths and weaknesses are, and how they work together. Second, I look at the technology we use and ask whether we need to improve it. As the catalyst for change, we need to drive transformation from the ground up.'
Role of technology
Another speaker on the panel, Sanjiv Jain, Group Chief Accounting Officer of G42, explained that technology can significantly reduce operational inefficiencies. 'We built our Procurement Navigator,' he said. 'What it does is automate real-time price comparisons from a panel of suppliers for general items like bottled water — and the order is placed immediately.'
He added that the person in charge of procurement feels 'empowered' and no longer has to 'waste time' calling different suppliers or seeking multiple approvals.
Paolo Lo Monaco, former Group CFO of Al Khayyat Investments and Chalhoub Group, added that while technology is available to everyone, what sets companies apart is their ability to find the right people to 'drive experiences and ensure successful implementation' of those technologies to grow the business.
Family offices
Meanwhile, Khalid Chami, Group CFO at Ali & Sons Holding, explained that things work a little differently in family-run businesses. 'I've seen a lot of CFOs talking about AI when they don't even have the basic infrastructure in place yet,' he said. 'In a family business, the most important asset is the family name. Whatever you do, you should be looking at long-term opportunities that protect that asset.'
He added that such offices tend to have a much more long-term vision compared to other companies. 'In family offices, CFOs are not there to achieve monthly targets,' he said. 'You need to approach your work with the long-term vision of the third or even fourth generation in mind. We aim to build things that are time-proof.'

Artificial intelligence use in schools is 'an inevitability', but finding the right balance between embracing the technology and maintaining traditional teaching techniques is the key to success, the head of the Middle East's largest private education group has said. Dino Varkey, group chief executive at Gems Education, said it spent 'a lot of time' as educators try to determine how AI can be used more effectively in schools. Tools including ChatGPT are used worldwide, causing debate over how best to bring them into the classroom. Mr Varkey is well aware that schools have to change to get the best out of the technology, with assessment a particular area of focus. 'Typically what you're trying to do, as AI is encroaching much more into our daily lives … the nature of the assessments that we perhaps need to do with our students needs to change and be transformed a little bit,' he said. He was speaking at the Gems Awareness Day on Wednesday, where more than 1,700 newly recruited teachers for this academic year were being welcomed. How will AI change testing? When asked whether pupils would face disciplinary action for using generative AI tools like ChatGPT to write essays, Mr Varkey said traditional take-home essay assignments are 'the wrong type of assessment' in the modern world. He suggested pupils could instead be tasked with using AI tools for research at home and then produce written work independently in class. 'In an exam situation, it's different. But if you're going to ask a child today to go and write an essay on something at home and bring it back, then that's actually not the right assessment,' he said. 'We have tools to allow us to be able to identify things that are clearly sort of written and or produced with the use of AI. But again, I would argue that the assessments need to change.' How will AI be used in schools? Mr Varkey was speaking behalf of Gems, a private educator, and while all private school groups across the UAE are looking at AI use, each has a slightly different approach. However, in government schools new AI classes are to be introduced across all stages of government education in the UAE from reception to grade 12 starting from the coming 2025/26 academic year. 'The subject will matter on teaching students how to use artificial intelligence in an ethical and responsible way,' Sarah Al Amiri, Minister of Education, said at an event on Tuesday. 'In the first and second cycle, there will be one class every two weeks focused on raising awareness towards the benefits and potential harms of AI, while on the third cycle it will be focused on using AI effectively.' The subject will be taught by the same teachers that teach computer science; they were trained specifically to teach AI for this year. Additionally, there will be a specialised committee that makes sure the subject is being taught effectively. Focus on human values Mr Varkey agrees for private sector schools, stressing that it is important to be aware of not just the benefits of AI but also the potential harms. He stressed that essential skills such as memory-building and critical thinking are important. 'The chair of our council, Baroness Spielman, would tell you that actually the use of AI in perhaps a more typical manner will lead to cognitive debt,' he said. 'That effectively means that a student's ability to retain something in the long-term memory can be completely impacted. There is a lot to do in terms of being able to use AI in the most effective manner.' Lisa Crausby, group chief education officer at Gems, added: 'It has a value. What we're saying, though, is that you still need all the other knowledge components and skills. 'As everybody's trying to lean into AI, we're actually shining a really big spotlight on our values, because you don't want to lose that. It's one thing AI can't offer.' The UN culture agency (Unesco) said that there was a lack of guidance worldwide on how AI should used in classrooms to improve learning outcomes. It said that its research in 2022 showed that only 15 countries had included AI learning objectives in their national curriculum, but only half of them had developed AI frameworks or programmes for teachers. New teachers recruited The academic year starts on August 25 in the UAE, with Gems welcoming more than 1,700 newly recruited teachers across the country and Qatar. That is a drop from last year's 1,850 new recruits, but Ms Crausby said it was a 'good sign' because the retention rate is improving. Taaleem, which operates more than 30 schools in the UAE, said they had a 25 per cent increase from last year in the number of new educators. 'Taaleem has seen a significant increase in teacher recruitment this academic year, reflecting both the population boom across the country and the continued growth of our schools,' the group told The National. 'In August alone, we successfully onboarded more than 500 new teachers, alongside senior leaders, learning assistants and administrative staff.' Taaleem said it was seeing a 'strong interest' from teachers abroad who are interested to work in the UAE. It said their new hiring model means they start recruitment planning a year in advance and recommended teachers to demonstrate 'adaptability, cultural awareness and commitment to professional development'.

UAE: Over 10,000 marriage applications from foreigners received by court in 2025

Over 10,000 civil marriage applications from foreigners were submitted to the Civil Family Court in Abu Dhabi during the first half of 2025, the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department has announced. This number represents an increase of approximately 20 per cent compared to the same period last year. This brings the total number of registered civil marriage contracts to 43,000 since the introduction of Law No. 14 of 2021 on civil marriage in Abu Dhabi. Counselor Yousef Saeed Al Abri, Undersecretary of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, said that the growing demand for civil marriage services by foreigners reflects the high quality and uniqueness of this service in the Middle East. According to the Civil Family Court's statistical report, the number of registered civil marriages has grown significantly in less than three years — from approximately 5,400 in 2022 to over 16,000 in 2024. Counselor Al Abri noted that Abu Dhabi is a preferred destination for those seeking civil marriage services, as it has the region's first civil personal status court dedicated to foreigners, and provides services in both Arabic and English. The advanced Civil Family Court model enables foreigners to complete legal proceedings transparently, with full understanding of each litigation stage — reflecting Abu Dhabi's dedication to the principles of inclusive justice. The court offers a comprehensive, streamlined judicial experience — from application submission to judgement issuance — in both Arabic and English. This boosts client confidence, and reduces time and procedural costs.
