Man's body discovered in Pasir Puteh river, cops classify as sudden death
KOTA BARU, June 19 — The body of a man was found floating in a river near Kampung Tualang Tinggi in Pasir Puteh yesterday.
Pasir Puteh police chief Supt Zaizul Rizal Zakaria said police received a report about the discovery at around 3.30pm.
'A team from the Selising Police Station and Pasir Puteh District Police Headquarters was dispatched to the scene and found the body in the river,' he said in a statement yesterday.
Initial checks found no signs of foul play at the location.
The body has been sent to Tengku Anis Hospital for a post-mortem, and the case has been classified as sudden death. — Bernama

The court had then fixed today for the presentation of case facts and sentencing to take place at the Magistrates' Court. Meanwhile, another defence counsel, Amer Haiqal Mohd Yusof, told reporters after the proceedings that the accused had not received proper legal advice before entering the earlier plea. Tahfiz student gets 2-year good behaviour bond in sexual assault case

(Reuters pic) PETALING JAYA : A tahfiz student who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting the child of a staff member at a tahfiz centre in Hulu Langat in April last year was bound over on a two-year good behaviour bond by the Ampang magistrates' court today. Magistrate Normaizan Rahim made the order and also set bail at RM3,000 after examining the boy's probation report by the social welfare department (JKM) at the proceedings today, Bernama reported. She also ordered the boy, now 18, to undergo a workshop organised by JKM and for him to be accompanied by his parents during the workshop. The boy, who was 17 at the time of the incident, was charged with sexually assaulting the victim, who was 13 years and eight months old, in April last year. The charge was framed under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which provides a prison sentence of not more than 20 years and whipping upon conviction. Lawyer A Rahman Nasir represented the accused, while the prosecution was represented by deputy public prosecutor Norhidayah Abdullah Sani.

Court doubles jail term of trailer driver who caused death of family of 4

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The Taiping High Court has doubled the jail term of a trailer driver convicted of driving dangerously and causing the death of a family of four in February 2020. Justice Noor Ruwena Nurdin dismissed Y Vethri Vel's appeal against his conviction, four-year jail term and RM20,000 fine, before further increasing the sentence meted out on the 31-year-old. The judge doubled Vethri's prison sentence to eight years and raised the fine to RM80,000, Harian Metro reported. On Dec 13, 2023, Vethri was convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol and causing the death of the family of four at Km37 Jalan Ipoh-Kuala Kangsar at 10.20pm on Feb 13, 2020. The deceased were Faiz Bakhari, 28, Nik Iedayu Nik Hassan, 30, Nik Ifeka Nik Hassan, 27, and 16-month-old Faqih Irsyad Faiz. Deputy public prosecutor Waffy Ismail prosecuted, while Vethri, a father of two, was represented by lawyers Ranjit Singh Sandhu and Faazil Rahman. Earlier, the lawyers sought for Vethri's sentence to be reduced to a good behaviour bond, but Waffy objected, saying the actions of the accused had led to the loss of four lives.
