Man's body discovered in Pasir Puteh river, cops classify as sudden death
Pasir Puteh police chief Supt Zaizul Rizal Zakaria said police received a report about the discovery at around 3.30pm.
'A team from the Selising Police Station and Pasir Puteh District Police Headquarters was dispatched to the scene and found the body in the river,' he said in a statement yesterday.
Initial checks found no signs of foul play at the location.
The body has been sent to Tengku Anis Hospital for a post-mortem, and the case has been classified as sudden death. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 — DAP today criticised alleged attempts to pressure the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) into prosecuting a Penang shopkeeper who mistakenly displayed the Jalur Gemilang incorrectly outside his premises. In a statement, DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook said such actions amounted to interference in prosecutorial decisions and called for the AGC to be allowed to operate independently without political influence. 'Threats by certain parties to stage a protest in front of the shop if no charges are brought are blatant bullying and unacceptable, particularly as the shopkeeper is a senior citizen,' he said. 'To deal with such immature parties, we must show higher rationality and act in a peaceful and courteous manner,' he added. DAP said it would sponsor a giant Jalur Gemilang to be installed at the shop this evening to demonstrate that the flag is now correctly displayed. The party added that if any group attempted to disturb the peace at the premises, its Penang members would respond by distributing 831 Jalur Gemilang flags for free as a gesture of unity ahead of National Day on August 31. The incident began when a 59-year-old hardware shop owner in Kepala Batas, Penang, was investigated after the Jalur Gemilang was found hanging upside-down outside his premises. He explained it was an unintentional mistake made while measuring a flagpole and that he corrected it soon after. Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh had planned to stage a protest at the shop, but it did not proceed after police were stationed in the area.

Police recover RM2m in stolen casino chips from Genting, hunt on for suspect abroad
KUANTAN, Aug 12 — Police have recovered 200 casino chips worth RM2 million, part of 300 chips stolen from Genting Highlands in Bentong on Aug 2. Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said following a media report on Friday (Aug 8), a man came forward to hand over 200 casino chips, each valued at RM10,000, which he had bought from a suspect who is a 'junket'. 'The victim, who is also one of the junkets at the casino, had purchased the 200 chips from the suspect at the Genting Grand lobby on Aug 2 via handover without any written agreement,' he said at a press conference after the Pahang police contingent monthly assembly here today. He said police, in cooperation with the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol), are tracking down the suspect, who had fled with the remaining 100 chips worth RM1 million and left the country via the autogate at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Yahaya said CCTV footage showed the suspect taking the chips and then heading to the car park before hurriedly leaving the casino in Genting Highlands and heading to KLIA the same day. The case is being investigated under Section 408 of the Penal Code for criminal breach of trust. Earlier, the media reported that police had received a report from a 32-year-old junket company manager who said the casino chips had been taken away while in a closed casino room at the resort. — Bernama

Farmer fined RM15,000 for offensive 3R post on Facebook

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A farmer was fined RM15,000 by the Sepang sessions court today for making and transmitting an offensive communication regarding a 3R (religion, race and royalty) issue via his Facebook page last February. Judge Ahmad Fuad Othman imposed the fine on Faisal Yusof, 37, after he changed his plea to guilty when the case was called up for mention, Bernama reported. Before meting out the sentence, the judge warned Faisal to be more cautious when using social media. 'You deleted the comment, but look what has happened, it persists even after deletion. You're still young, you need to think long and hard,' he was quoted as saying. Faisal was charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for making and transmitting the offensive communication via his Facebook account 'Mohd Faisal Yusof' with the intention of causing annoyance to others. The posting, made at 12.40am on Feb 9, was subsequently deleted but was still detected by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission at 1.40pm on the same day. The offence carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or up to one year in jail, or both, with additional daily fines if the offence continues after conviction.
