KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - Media OutReach Newswire - 28 May 2025 - According to Coinbase's April 2025 Monthly Outlook, the total crypto market capitalisation (excluding Bitcoin) has fallen by 41% from $1.6 trillion in December 2024 to $950 billion in early April 2025. This was the sharpest decline in over two years , pulling valuations below levels seen throughout most of the 2021–2022 cycle. However, the sell-off was far from uniform. While Bitcoin has shed less than 20% at the beginning of April, altcoins have experienced a 41% wipeout, underscoring a distinct capital flight towards more established digital assets. Most recently, Bitcoin has managed to recover and even set a new all-time high, surpassing the critical $110,000 mark on 21 May. At the same time, other crypto majors—notably, Ethereum and XRP—continue to trade substantially below their recent peaks (see the chart below). As capital retreated from riskier altcoins, investor sentiment has soured, prompting Coinbase to warn of an emerging 'crypto winter' scenario. Global broker Octa, active in digital asset transactions, sees this as a decisive phase of risk reallocation, with traders seeking clarity before any meaningful return to risk.More speculative corners of the market, such as tokens used for Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks (DePINs), memecoins and coins used for Artificial Intelligence (AI) agents, have been hardest hit. Their underperformance highlights growing investor caution.Kar Yong Ang, a financial market analyst at Octa broker, explains:Indeed, broader financial markets have become increasingly concerned about the deteriorating U.S. twin deficits (fiscal and trade), both of which are on an unsustainable trajectory. The yields on the U.S. 20-year government bonds rose above 5.15% on 22 May, almost a two-year high, while the U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) dropped below the critical 100 mark, reflecting eroding confidence in the USD's safe-haven status. Furthermore, ratings agency Moody's downgraded the U.S. sovereign rating, one notch down from 'Aaa' to 'Aa1' due to concerns about the nation's growing debt. Concurrently, most cryptocurrencies continue to act as high-beta proxies for global sentiment, and in today's global macroeconomic environment, that sensitivity is proving to be a significant headwind. Tariff disputes between the U.S. and China, macroeconomic uncertainty, and declining equity market performance are all contributing to a reduction in overall risk appetite, thereby negatively impacting most cryptocurrencies. However, Bitcoin appears to be a major exception in this regard.Kar Yong Ang explains: 'Still, the ongoing macroeconomic uncertainty and potential failure of the U.S. to resolve its trade tensions with China and the European Union (EU) could act as an immediate catalyst, potentially triggering a renewed bearish phase for Bitcoin. Just recently, U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to impose 50% tariffs on the EU triggered a classical risk-off move—a sell-off in BTCUSD and a rally in XAUUSD.Tactical patience will be essential this summer. Rushing in to buy Bitcoin now may be unwise, but carefully buying the dips is more reasonable. Key levels to watch are 105,000, 98,000, 94,000, 89,000, and 84,000.___Hashtag: #Octa

World Bank says earthquake worsens Myanmar's economic decline

Myanmar is reeling in the aftermath of the earthquake that struck in March. (AP pic) WASHINGTON : Myanmar's beleaguered economy is expected to contract by 2.5% in the 2025/26 fiscal year largely due to the devastating impact of a powerful earthquake in late March, the World Bank said in a report on Thursday. The World Bank said direct damages to property and infrastructure from the 7.7 magnitude quake were estimated at US$11 billion, or 14% of the nation's gross domestic product, estimating that economic output would be about US$2 billion lower than it otherwise would have been because of the quake. The quake affected more than 17 million people, with nine million severely impacted, the World Bank said. The death toll has topped 3,700, according to Myanmar's ruling junta. 'The earthquake caused significant loss of life and displacement, while exacerbating already difficult economic conditions, further testing the resilience of Myanmar's people,' Melinda Good, Division Director for Thailand and Myanmar, said in a statement. 'Recovery efforts are essential to help the most vulnerable populations.' A junta spokesman did not respond to a call from Reuters seeking comment on the report. In December, the World Bank had projected Myanmar's economy would shrink 1% in the 2024/25 fiscal year that ended in March due to the severe flooding in the country. Myanmar has been in turmoil since the military seized power in a coup in February 2021, sparking a civil war. There have been international efforts to stall the conflict, but rebels have accused the junta of breaching a ceasefire called to allow relief efforts to reach earthquake-affected areas. The hardest-hit regions of Mandalay and Naypyidaw were expected to lose up to one-third of their production between April and September before a partial recovery in the second half of the fiscal year, the World Bank said. The earthquake could increase the national poverty rate by 2.8 percentage points, pushing more households into poverty, the report stated. A survey before the quake estimated the poverty rate at 31% in 2024. 'Myanmar's compounding crises have put household coping mechanisms under severe stress,' said Kim Edwards, Senior Economist and Program Leader for Thailand and Myanmar.

PM Anwar: Govt considering dedicated commission for TVET sector

MELAKA, June 12 — The government is mulling over the proposal to establish a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Commission in line with the TVET reform agenda that is being actively implemented. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this was because the development of TVET under the National TVET Council chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has shown encouraging results, including an increase in the number of students. 'I appreciate the role of the TVET Council, but as those closely monitoring the sector's development, we must consider proposals such as establishing a dedicated commission for TVET, and we will assess this as swiftly as possible in response to the sector's evolving needs. 'With the number of students and types of training increasing, I, together with the Ministry of Finance, will look into whether current facilities are adequate and how to create synergy between government-linked companies, private sector players, and existing TVET institutions.' Anwar said this when opening the National TVET Day 2025 celebration at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC), Ayer Keroh, here today. — Bernama MORE TO COME

NAIO hails France's Station F as model for startups, AI advancement

NAIO head Shamsul Izhan Abdul Majid said the office is building cross-border innovation pathways in sectors such as healthcare, transport, agriculture, education, public services and MSMEs. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : France's vibrant startup ecosystem, exemplified by Station F, offers a compelling roadmap for Malaysia's artificial intelligence (AI) entrepreneurs, says the head of Malaysia's National Artificial Intelligence Office (NAIO). Shamsul Izhan Abdul Majid said Station F, the world's largest startup facility located in the heart of Paris, boasts more than 1,000 startups, an installed presence of global venture capital and a deep corporate innovation network. Inspired by this model, he said NAIO is building cross-border innovation pathways in sectors such as healthcare, transport, agriculture, education, public services and micro, small and medium-sized enterprises. Speaking at the launch of the France-Malaysia Innovation Day 2025, Shamsul said France has set a new high bar in technology innovation, emphasising the government's commitment to continued collaboration and idea sharing between Malaysia and France. 'By reducing friction in cross-border research and development, we empower AI startups to thrive on both sides of the world. 'This is how AI diplomacy becomes real: with a focus on collaboration, shared governance and sector legal information that corresponds to the challenges of our time,' he said. By connecting France's technological depth with Malaysia's talent, Shamsul said Malaysia is more than prepared to build inventions that are not only advanced but also adaptive, inclusive and human-centred. 'France's contributions to AI, engineering and cutting-edge research, from quantum machine learning to world-leading robotics, offer boundless avenues for joint collaboration.' French ambassador to Malaysia Axel Cruau, who was also present at the event, affirmed Malaysia's role in spearheading digital innovation in Southeast Asia. 'With Malaysia's chairmanship of Asean this year, its push for the Asean Digital Economic Framework Agreement (Defa), and its organisation of Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is poised to position itself as a regional leader for innovation, digital transformation, and ethical AI use,' he said. Defa, introduced at the 2023 Asean Economic Ministers' meeting in Indonesia, provides a vision of digital transformation committed to empowering Asean businesses in unlocking a borderless era of economic growth. Cruau also reiterated France's commitment to supporting Malaysian tech startups through French Tech Malaysia, a French government initiative aimed at expanding the country's entrepreneurial ecosystem in Malaysia.
