Gary Busey pleads guilty to criminal sexual contact

Express Tribune01-08-2025
Actor Gary Busey has pleaded guilty to one count of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact in connection to an incident that occurred during a fan event in August 2022. The 81-year-old entered his plea during a virtual court appearance before Judge Gwendolyn Blue, according to Court TV.
The charge stems from allegations that Busey inappropriately touched two women during a photo opportunity at Monster-Mania Con, held at the Doubletree Hotel in Camden, New Jersey. Though Busey initially denied the claims and publicly stated 'nothing happened,' he has now admitted to intentionally groping one of the women. 'It was not an accidental touching,' Busey told Judge Blue.
As part of the plea deal, prosecutors have agreed to drop three additional counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact and one count of attempted criminal sexual contact. Busey now faces a sentence of one to five years of probation, along with monetary fines. His sentencing is scheduled to take place virtually next month.
Busey's attorney, Blair Zwillman, attempted to challenge the indictment, arguing that police failed to interview key witnesses, which he said compromised the integrity of the investigation. However, Judge Blue upheld the case, stating that proper procedures had been followed and that the grand jury had sufficient testimony.
The actor, best known for his roles in Lethal Weapon and Under Siege, previously downplayed the accusations, telling paparazzi in 2022 that the alleged interaction lasted 'less than 10 seconds' and was fabricated. 'They made up a story that I assaulted them sexually when I did not,' he said at the time.
Busey, who has made headlines in recent years for public behavior such as exposing himself in public, has not yet released a statement regarding the plea.

Anya Taylor-Joy and Meryl Streep to play Joni Mitchell in Cameron Crowe biopic

Anya Taylor-Joy is in talks to take on the role of music legend Joni Mitchell in a new biopic from director Cameron Crowe. The project, still in early development, will chronicle the life and career of the iconic singer-songwriter through an unconventional narrative structure. Taylor-Joy, who recently starred in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and gained acclaim for The Queen's Gambit, is expected to portray Mitchell in her prime during the 1960s and 1970s. This was the period when Mitchell released groundbreaking albums such as Blue and Clouds and penned timeless songs including 'Both Sides Now' and 'A Case of You.' The film will also feature three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep as present-day Mitchell, offering a layered perspective on the artist's journey from her early rise in the folk scene to her enduring cultural impact. Director Cameron Crowe, known for Almost Famous and Jerry Maguire, has long had a passion for music-driven storytelling. His approach is expected to emphasize Mitchell's artistry, personal struggles, and influence on generations of musicians. Mitchell, often hailed as one of the greatest songwriters of all time, overcame industry challenges and personal health battles while leaving behind a body of work that continues to resonate globally. Her poetic lyrics and innovative compositions reshaped the landscape of modern music. If confirmed, Taylor-Joy's portrayal would mark another transformative role in her career, while Streep's casting adds significant prestige. No release date or production timeline has yet been announced for the biopic.

Sydney Sweeney transforms into boxer Christy Martin for biopic ahead of TIFF 2025 premiere

Sydney Sweeney has undergone a striking transformation for her latest role, portraying legendary boxer Christy Martin in the upcoming biopic Christy. Known for her performances in Euphoria and Anyone But You, Sweeney appears almost unrecognisable in the newly released still from the film. The photo shows Sweeney in a boxing ring, donning gloves and a mouthguard, with a fierce expression as she embodies the former professional fighter. Her appearance is drastically altered, dressed in a white tank top and shorts, her hair dark brown and curly, portraying Martin during the height of her career in the 1990s. Fans have been vocal in their reactions to the image, with many praising the bold shift in direction. 'This transformation is akin to Charlize Theron in Monster,' one viewer commented. Another added, 'From lace to leather gloves. Sydney's switching lanes and I'm here for it.' Others described the change as 'a total transformation' and said they 'barely recognise her.' Christy Martin is regarded as a pivotal figure in the history of women's boxing, credited with bringing widespread attention to the sport during her time in the ring. The film, directed by David Michôd, is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in early September. Joining Sweeney in the cast are Merritt Wever, Katy O'Brian, Ben Foster and Ethan Embry. The biopic is expected to focus on Martin's professional achievements and personal challenges throughout her boxing career.
