SEDCO and S2M ally to revolutionise self-service banking with integrated, AI-powered solutions

Khaleej Times02-06-2025
SEDCO, a global leader in customer experience and digital transformation solutions, has partnered with S2M, a pioneer in payment and card management technologies, to deliver next-generation self-service banking solutions. Announced at Seamless ME 2025 in Dubai recently, the partnership aims to provide banks with integrated, AI-powered solutions that enhance customer convenience and operational efficiency.
The collaboration focuses on delivering instant card issuance through smart, user-friendly kiosks, enabling customers to open accounts and receive debit cards within minutes. By combining SEDCO's expertise in digital customer journeys with S2M's robust payment infrastructure, the alliance seeks to redefine banking accessibility and experience.
'Our strategic partnership with S2M represents a significant step towards transforming the banking landscape,' said Majdi Shawish, CEO of SEDCO. 'Together, we are committed to providing seamless, secure, and accessible banking solutions that meet the evolving needs of customers worldwide.'
'By integrating our conversational AI and AI-powered queuing systems with S2M's payment technologies, we are enabling banks to offer 24/7 services, reduce operational costs, and enhance customer satisfaction. This synergy empowers financial institutions to stay competitive in a rapidly changing market,' he added.
Mohammed Amarti Riffi, executive vice-president at S2M, commented, 'Partnering with SEDCO allows us to extend our reach and deliver comprehensive self-service solutions that address the growing demand for instant, secure, and user-friendly banking services. Our combined expertise ensures that customers have access to innovative solutions that simplify their financial interactions.'
Speaking about how customer expectations have evolved in recent years, Shawish said: 'People increasingly demand speed, convenience, and round-the-clock availability. Traditional banking hours and legacy systems often fall short, particularly among digital-first customers and in underserved areas. Self-service banking, powered by AI and smart kiosks, is bridging this gap and redefining how customers engage with banks.'
'Conversational AI plays a central role in this transformation, simulating human interaction to deliver a natural, intuitive experience through virtual assistants. SEDCO's AI systems are specifically trained on each bank's knowledge base, ensuring that interactions reflect the bank's tone, policies, and service priorities. This allows customers to perform complex tasks, such as opening accounts or issuing new cards, without needing to speak to a human agent,' he further stated.
He continued, 'One leading bank in the region deployed SEDCO's self-service kiosks across multiple branches to streamline common transactions like card issuance, chequebook printing, account statement printing, and account updates. As a result, the bank reduced in-branch waiting times, significantly improved service availability to 24/7, and freed up staff to focus on high-value, advisory roles. This transformation not only enhanced customer satisfaction but also optimised operational costs and branch resources.
'Feedback on SEDCO's conversational AI has been overwhelmingly positive. Customers appreciate the simplicity and natural interaction, especially when booking appointments, receiving e-tickets, or accessing basic banking services. Many have expressed a preference for voice or chatbot-based assistance over navigating complex menus, particularly among senior customers who find the AI-driven guidance easier to follow,' he added.
Discussing the advantages of self-service banking, Shawish explained that, unlike traditional banking, self-service solutions are available 24/7 and don't rely on branch visits or working hours. They also reduce operational costs for banks by cutting staffing needs, minimising real estate requirements, and enabling faster turnaround times. 'However, self-service banking is not a replacement for traditional banking. Rather, it complements it by shifting routine transactions to machines and freeing up human staff to focus on complex inquiries and relationship management,' he said.
Shawish opined that while fully digital branches are emerging in some city centres for high-frequency transactional services, the future of banking is largely hybrid. He stated: 'Kiosk-driven services will handle routine tasks efficiently, while human staff will remain essential for complex transactions and relationship-building. SEDCO's solutions are designed to offer this flexibility, helping banks expand their digital services while still providing a personal touch wherever customers need it.'
Both companies bring decades of experience and a shared vision for innovation. SEDCO, with over 40 years of expertise, specialises in comprehensive customer experience management (CEM) solutions that span the entire customer journey, from pre-visit engagement to post-service feedback. Their offerings include advanced queue management systems, digital signage, self-service kiosks, and business intelligence tools, all designed to create seamless, efficient, and personalised customer interactions across various sectors, including banking, telecommunications, healthcare, and government services.
Together, SEDCO and S2M are set to introduce groundbreaking technologies that merge their respective strengths. This includes AI-driven virtual assistants capable of providing human-like interactions, smart kiosks equipped for instant card issuance, and integrated platforms that streamline banking operations while enhancing customer engagement. By leveraging SEDCO's expertise in customer journey optimisation and S2M's robust payment infrastructure, the partnership aims to deliver innovative solutions that redefine the self-service banking experience.
The partnership has already seen successful implementations in various regions across Africa, with plans to expand into the Middle East and parts of Europe. By leveraging their combined strengths, SEDCO and S2M aim to make advanced banking services more accessible to underserved communities, promoting financial inclusion and economic growth.

Saudi Arabia signs renewable energy deals worth $8.3bn with Acwa Power consortium

Saudi Arabia has signed agreements worth more than 31 billion riyals ($8.3 billion) for seven renewable energy projects with an Acwa Power -led consortium to boost the kingdom's green energy capacity. Power purchase agreements for new solar and wind energy projects with 15 gigawatts capacity signed by the state-owned company Principal Buyer in the presence of the Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman are part of the country's National Renewable Energy Programme, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Sunday. 'The signing of these agreements represents the largest capacity globally signed for renewable energy projects in a single phase,' SPA said. 'It confirms the kingdom's continued leadership in developing renewable energy infrastructure and achieving globally competitive costs of electricity production per kilowatt-hour, due to efficient financing and development models, as well as growing investor confidence in the Saudi investment environment.' Acwa Power is the main developer for the developments in partnership with the Public Investment Fund-owned Water and Electricity Holding Company (Badeel), and Aramco Power, a subsidiary of state-controlled oil and gas giant Saudi Aramco. Principal Buyer is responsible for preparing feasibility studies and tendering electricity generation projects, SPA added. So far, it has launched renewable electricity generation projects with a total capacity of 43 gigawatts. Of these, Principal Buyer has already signed power purchase agreements for projects with a capacity of 38 gigawatts. The remaining 10.21 gigawatts have already been connected to the national grid. Saudi Arabia expects the capacity connected to the grid to reach 12.7 gigawatts by the end of this year and rise to more than 20 gigawatts by the end of 2026. The solar deals signed on Sunday include a three-gigawatt Bisha project in Aseer, a three-gigawatt development in Madinah, the Khulis Project in Makkah with a capacity of two gigawatts, and Afif 1 and Afif 2 in Riyadh, each with a two-gigawatt capacity. The wind energy projects include two in Riyadh: the Starah development with a capacity of two gigawatts and the one-gigawatt Shaqra project, SPA reported. Backed by the PIF, Acwa Power is one of the largest renewable energy developers in the Middle East. It currently has operations in 14 countries across the Middle East, Africa, and Central and South-East Asia. It is an investor in and operator of 101 power generation and water desalination projects in operation, construction and advanced development with an overall portfolio size of about $107.5 billion as of February this year. The company has grown quickly over the years, capitalising on the rising demand of green energy in the Middle East and the 14 countries it operates in. Renewable energy generation in the Middle East is forecast to grow by about 14 per cent per year from now until 2027, with its share of the overall energy mix rising from 5 per cent to 7 per cent, according to the International Energy Agency. Beyond the region, Acwa Power is eyeing markets including China to further strengthen its global footprint. The company plans to grow its business in China despite concerns of a trade war with the US, chief executive Marco Arcelli said in March. The company has already entered China's renewable energy market with agreements for projects that will generate one gigawatt of electricity. By 2030, it aims to invest up to $30 billion in China – the world's largest renewable energy market – in line with its plans to triple its overall assets under management to about $250 billion. 'We take a long-term view, and we see China as a very strong economy,' Mr Arcelli told The National. 'China has a programme of installing 250-300 gigawatts of renewables per year, and the commitment there is very strong. The scale is such that even if, in theory, it slows down by 10 per cent, it is still a gigantic market.'

UAE: DP World to upgrade, operate Syria's Port of Tartus in $800-million, 30-year deal

DP World has signed a landmark 30-year concession agreement with Syria's General Authority for Land and Sea Ports to develop and operate the Port of Tartus. The signing ceremony took place in the presence of Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa. Under the deal, DP World will invest $800 million throughout the concession period to upgrade the port's infrastructure, aiming to transform it into a major regional trade hub. The enhanced Port of Tartus will serve as a key gateway linking Southern Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, boosting connectivity and regional commerce. "This agreement marks an important step forward for the Port of Tartus and Syria's maritime sector," said Qutaiba Ahmed Badawi, chairman of Syria's General Authority for Land and Maritime Ports. "Partnering with DP World will allow us to modernise and strengthen the efficiency of our trade infrastructure as we continue to rebuild key trade lanes, support the national economy, and provide more opportunities for the Syrian people," he added. Meanwhile, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, chairman and Group CEO of DP World, said that they see strong potential in Tartus to serve as a vital trade gateway. "(We) look forward to strengthening regional connectivity and economic opportunity through this investment. We believe in the power of trade to help drive long-term stability and prosperity for Syria and the region," said Sultan. The agreement follows a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed on May 16 between the two sides after the lifting of US sanctions paved the way for the investment. The MoU outlined plans to develop, manage, and operate a multi-purpose terminal at Tartus, with cooperation on establishing industrial and free trade zones. DP World is a subsidiary of the UAE investment company Dubai World. Syria is seeking to attract foreign investments to boost its struggling economy, and the deal was signed in the same week that US President Donald Trump announced plans to lift of sanctions on Syria during a visit to Riyadh.
