Reacting sharply over the Panoli's arrest, BJP co-incharge for West Bengal Amit Malviya accused the TMC government of "selectively enforcing" the law as part of its appeasement politics.
"Sharmishta Panoli, just 22 years old, has been arrested and sent to 14-day judicial custody over a video she had already deleted and publicly apologised for on May 15," Malviya wrote in a post on X.
Live Events
There have been no reports of communal unrest linked to her remarks, yet the Kolkata police is acting with "uncharacteristic haste", he charged.
"Chief Minister
Mamata Banerjee
herself has made far more divisive statements, which have had far-reaching consequences, including tragic loss of life and destruction of property on multiple occasions," he said and asked, "Will the law be applied to her with the same urgency?"
"This isn't just a case in West Bengal. It reflects how a young Hindu woman is being targeted to appease a vote bank," Malviya said.
Justice must not be "politically convenient", the BJP leader said, adding that "India is watching".

"Time for Party to prepare": BJP chief JP Nadda charts roadmap in Himachal ahead of Panchayat polls

Solan (Himachal Pradesh) [India], June 3 (ANI): Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President JP Nadda on Monday chaired a key core group meeting of the party in Himachal Pradesh's Solan, and instructed the state unit to start preparing for the upcoming Panchayat elections. During his visit, Nadda also participated in a Tiranga Yatra, where he congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the armed forces for Operation Sindoor. In his address during the core group meeting, Nadda instructed the state BJP to launch a series of outreach programmes over the next two and a half months from June 5 to August 15 coinciding with the 11th anniversary of the Modi government. These events, he emphasised, should highlight the achievements of the Centre and energise party cadres across Himachal Pradesh. The State spokesperson and BJP MLA Randheer Sharma elaborated on the upcoming programme, saying, 'from Sankalp to Siddhi, We'll Take 11 Years of Modi's Work to the people.' 'The main agenda of today's core group meeting was to prepare for the campaigns around the 11-year milestone of the Modi government, which has undoubtedly been historic. Under the slogan 'Sankalp se Siddhi Tak', we will reach out to the public with the government's achievements,' he added. Sharma also outlined specific events being planned. 'On June 5, World Environment Day, we will begin with environment-related events. On June 21, we will observe International Yoga Day with programmes at the mandal level. On June 25, we will observe a 'Black Day' to mark the anniversary of the Emergency. Each of these events will be well-planned, and this detailed calendar will serve as a launchpad for our party's strategy leading into upcoming Panchayati Raj and Assembly elections,' he said. Meanwhile, former Himachal CM Jai Ram Thakur expressed his happiness over Nadda attending the Tiranga Yatra despite having a busy schedule. 'It was a matter of joy that despite attending a family function in Himachal, Nadda ji participated in both the Tiranga Yatra and the core group meeting. His presence has deeply motivated the party workers,' he added. Thakur further emphasised the significance of the guidance provided by the BJP national president, saying, 'he told us it's time to prepare, as half of the state government's term is already over. Naturally, as the Opposition, it's our responsibility to raise public issues both inside and outside the Assembly and face the upcoming challenges from the ruling side effectively. (ANI)

"West Bengal rapidly turning into rape capital of India": Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar

Hooghly (West Bengal) [India], June 3 (ANI): Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar slammed the West Bengal government on Monday, claiming that the state is 'rapidly turning into the rape capital of India.' His comments came during a visit to Hooghly, where he met the family of a rape victim. A 13-yeard-old girl, who had been missing since May 27, was allegedly raped and murdered. The Srirampur Court in Hooghly sent the accused to custody. 'The most disturbing part is that the girl, who went missing on the 27th, was later found completely naked. She was also differently-abled. Unfortunately, this is not the only incident -- West Bengal is rapidly turning into the rape capital of India,' Majumdar told ANI. Earlier on Monday, Majumdar also visited the family of Border Security Force (BSF) jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw, who was repatriated to India on May 14 after being held in custody by Pakistan Rangers since April 23. Majumdar praised the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to bring the BSF jawan back. 'On the first day, when I spoke to his wife, the entire family was devastated. But despite the pain, they showed remarkable patience. Following that, under the leadership of our Prime Minister, and with the efforts of the Home Minister and Defence Minister, Purnam Kumar Shaw has been brought back home safely. This is truly commendable. Even earlier, under this leadership, we successfully brought Wing Commander Abhinandan back. This is the mark of a new India under PM Modi,' he said. Earlier on May 24, the BSF jawan expressed joy and relief upon arriving in his hometown of Rishra, West Bengal. 'I feel good. I came here to meet the people after the operation... I was worried about my parents, so I came home and met my entire family... I was there during the time of Operation Sindoor, and my parents were worried, so I came to meet them,' the BSF Jawan said. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed happiness over BSF Jawan PK Shaw's safe return. She said the Trinamool Congress government had made efforts for his safe return. Bengal CM told reporters that they had been in touch with Purnam Shaw's wife, Rajani Shaw, throughout and spoke to her four or five times. (ANI)
