Tax-free salary, easy visa: Why 800,000+ Indians live and work in Qatar

Tax-free salary, easy visa: Why 800,000+ Indians live and work in Qatar

As Iran launched a military strike on a US base in Qatar on June 24, 2025, the Indian government said it was monitoring the situation closely. The Indian embassy in Doha issued a safety advisory for its citizens, asking them to stay indoors and follow local guidance.
'In view of the ongoing situation, the Indian community in Qatar is urged to be cautious and remain indoors. Please remain calm and follow local news, instructions and guidance provided by Qatari authorities,' the embassy said.
Qatar is home to over 800,000 Indians — the largest expatriate group in the country — and is a long-standing destination for those seeking work and higher earnings abroad. But what makes Qatar so attractive to Indian workers?
Mayank Kumar, co-founder and CEO of BorderPlus, a talent mobility platform, told Business Standard that Qatar remains an attractive destination for several reasons.
'Qatar continues to be an attractive destination for Indian professionals, particularly because of the combination of high, tax-free earnings and lower barriers to entry compared to Western markets,' said Kumar.
He added that typical monthly incomes for Indian professionals range from ₹1 lakh to ₹1.5 lakh, and with no income tax, the savings potential is much higher than in India and often comparable to countries like the UK or Germany.
Kumar said licensing and visa procedures in sectors like construction and healthcare are relatively straightforward, with fewer language hurdles, which makes it easier for professionals to move.
'Geographical proximity, a large Indian community, and familiar cultural norms help new migrants settle in quickly. There's a built-in support system,' he said.
Jobs Indians take up in Qatar
Indian nationals in Qatar are employed across both white- and blue-collar roles. According to Kumar:
• Construction and infrastructure projects continue to absorb large numbers of Indian workers
• Hospitals in the public and private sectors hire doctors, nurses and allied health professionals
• Oil and gas companies, retail chains, IT firms, schools, and hospitality businesses also depend on Indian talent
'Service roles in hospitality, retail, and domestic work remain vital to Qatar's economy and are often filled by experienced Indian workers,' he said.
Indian presence in education and business in Qatar
Official figures show that:
• Over 60,000 Indian students are enrolled in 19 Indian curriculum schools and a few international schools in Qatar
• Around 4,500 Indian nationals work as teachers or non-teaching staff in these schools
• More than 20,000 Indian-owned or partnered firms operate across infrastructure, energy, communications, and tech
• Indian companies have invested more than $350 million in Qatar between 2017 and 2025, according to Invest Qatar
Large Indian firms with a presence in the country include L&T, Shapoorji Pallonji, Wipro, TCS, Tech Mahindra, Lulu Group, Malabar, and Tanishq.
Longstanding ties and reforms draw workers
'India and Qatar share deep, longstanding ties, socially, culturally, and economically, with the Indian workforce playing a vital role in Qatar's development,' said Kumar.
He noted that Qatar has introduced reforms over the past few years, including:
> Removing the requirement for exit permits and no-objection certificates
> Setting a non-discriminatory minimum wage
> Strengthening labour protections
Kumar added, 'As Qatar undergoes rapid growth and diversification, it faces a growing demand for skilled, job-ready professionals. India, with its vast pool of qualified workers, is well positioned to help address this gap.'
Impact of regional tensions on Indian migrants
On whether the current tensions are affecting long-term plans, Kumar said most Indians still view Qatar as a stable option.
'While current geopolitical tensions may have a short-term impact, Qatar will continue to be a strong destination for Indian professionals in the long run. With steady demand for skilled workers and close India-Qatar ties, it offers promising opportunities for those looking to build careers abroad.'

Russia ‘lost oil client' India: Trump claim on whether tariffs brought Putin to table in Alaska

US President Donald Trump claimed on Friday that Russia lost an "oil client", India, when asked if "there is an economic side" to Russian President Vladimir Putin agreeing to hold a meeting in Alaska. In an interview with Fox News, Trump was asked, "Would you sense that Putin comes to this table maybe in an economic pinch? Maybe the things you've already done have put him in an economic pitch. Is there an economic side to this as Russia hoping to open up?" Trump responded by saying, "Well, he [Putin] lost an oil client, so to speak, which is India, which was doing about 40% of the oil." 'China, as you know, is doing a lot [ of oil trade with Russia]...,' he said. Trump had earlier threatened sanctions on Moscow and secondary sanctions on countries that buy its oil if no moves are made to end the war in Ukraine. China and India are the top two buyers of Russian oil. Donald Trump said on Friday he did not immediately need to consider retaliatory tariffs on countries such as China for buying Russian oil but might have to 'in two or three weeks.' "…if I did what's called the secondary sanction or a secondary tariff, it would be, you know, very devastating from their standpoint. If I have to do it, I'll do it. Maybe I won't have to do it," Trump said. Trump's comments came ahead of his meeting with Putin in Alaska on Friday. The two leaders held three-on-three meeting on Friday to discuss Ukraine war. After the summit, Trump was asked if he was now considering such action against Beijing after he and Putin failed to produce an agreement to resolve or pause Moscow's war in Ukraine. He said, "Well, because of what happened today, I think I don't have to think about that," Trump said after his summit with Putin in Alaska. 'Now, I may have to think about it in two weeks or three weeks or something, but we don't have to think about that right now. I think, you know, the meeting went very well.' Earlier this month, Trump threatened buyers of Russian energy with additional tariffs as a means of pressuring Putin into peace talks with Ukraine. The US president already doubled duties on Indian products to 50 percent starting August 27 over its purchases of oil from Moscow. But raising tariffs on China would risk breaking a trade truce that Trump on Monday agreed to extend for another 90 days. That agreement saw Washington and Beijing lower duties on each others' goods that reached astronomical levels in the spring, which spooked global markets. China has defended its imports of Russian oil as lawful and necessary for its energy security.

India Achieves Historic 100 GW Solar PV Manufacturing Milestone

Last Updated: India's solar PV module capacity hit 100 GW under ALMM, up from 2.3 GW in 2014. Minister Pralhad Joshi credits PM Modi's vision and the PLI Scheme. News18 India has achieved a historic milestone of 100 gigawatts (GW) of solar PV module manufacturing capacity registered under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM), marking a significant leap in the country's renewable energy journey. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, called it a 'remarkable rise" from just 2.3 GW in 2014, crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision and initiatives like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for High-Efficiency Solar Modules. He said the achievement strengthens India's path toward Atmanirbhar Bharat and its target of 500 GW non-fossil capacity by 2030. The Government of India's commitment is to make India self-reliant in solar PV manufacturing and establish the country as a major player in the global value chain. This commitment is supported through a comprehensive set of initiatives, including the PLI Scheme for High Efficiency Solar PV Modules and measures to provide a level playing field for the Indian manufacturers. The catalytic effect of these interventions has resulted in an expansion in solar module manufacturing capacity, from just 2.3 GW in 2014 to over 100 GW today. This reinforces India's commitment to achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 and contributes meaningfully to global decarbonization efforts. The ALMM Order was issued by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) on 02nd January 2019. The first ALMM list for solar PV modules was published on 10th March 2021 with an initial enlisted capacity of around 8.2 GW. In just over four years, this capacity has grown more than twelvefold, crossing the 100 GW mark. This remarkable expansion is not just limited to depth of capacity achieved, but by the breadth of the number of manufacturers who has also significantly increased from 21 in 2021 to 100 manufacturers, who are operating 123 manufacturing units currently. This growth includes contributions from both established companies and new entrants, many of whom have adopted high-efficiency technologies and vertically integrated operations. The result is a diverse and competitive manufacturing landscape capable of meeting domestic needs and serving global markets. The crossing of the 100 GW solar module manufacturing capacity underscores the success of Indian solar PV manufacturing story, and the collective efforts of industry, various State governments, and the Government of India. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
