‘Stick': The First TV Golf Sitcom Hits Most of Its Marks

Having grown up with golf (my dad was a pro golfer), I'm particularly drawn to features about the sport. There haven't been many of them, and, of those, only a few are very good. There's 'Tin Cup' (1996), 'Caddyshack' (1980), and 'The Greatest Game Ever Played' (2005). That's pretty much it. Adam Sandler's 'Happy Gilmore' (1996) has a big cult following, but I didn't care for it as I don't care much for Sandler in general.

Adam Sandler is putting a new spin on his beloved titular golfer in the full trailer for the Netflix sequel movie Happy Gilmore 2. During Saturday's fan event Tudum at the Kia Forum in the Los Angeles area, Netflix debuted the trailer for director Kyle Newacheck's new comedy that is set to begin streaming July 25. Sandler reprises his starring role as the long-driving phenom that he originated in Universal's 1996 film Happy Gilmore. Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen and Ben Stiller are among the performers returning from the original feature, while new cast additions include Bad Bunny, Margaret Qualley, Benny Safdie, Travis Kelce and Kym Whitley. Also set to appear are Eminem and such pro golfers as Jack Nicklaus, John Daly and Jordan Spieth. 'I haven't swung a club in years,' Sandler's character laments in footage that was previously released and shows Happy getting back in the swing of things. 'I'm a little intimidated. All these guys hit it big now.' The Hollywood Reporter exclusively reported that Dennis Dugan — who directed the original Happy Gilmore and executive produces the sequel — is reprising his onscreen part as pro golf tour commissioner Doug Thompson in the new film. Returning to produce Happy Gilmore 2 are Sandler, Tim Herlihy, Robert Simonds and Jack Giarraputo. Sandler and Herlihy wrote the screenplay for the sequel after having penned the original's script. Earlier this year, Dugan teased Kelce's role in the sequel. 'His acting was really good and funny, and he was just a genuinely nice guy,' Dugan told THR at the time. 'I met him for a day and a half, loved working with him, and now every time he catches a pass on TV, I say, 'My best friend caught another pass.'' During an interview with the Dan Patrick Show that aired late last year, Sandler admitted to feeling pressure to live up to the original movie that hit theaters Feb. 16, 1996. 'It's on your mind,' Sandler said at the time. 'We've got a lot of good stuff, and we just want to make sure that it all comes together and keeps it going from start to finish, and that's the goal. We'll see. We're definitely nervous, but we feel some sort of confidence.' Julie Bowen Thought She'd Be Replaced By Sydney Sweeney in ‘Happy Gilmore 2'
Nearly three decades after the release of Happy Gilmore, a sequel is on the way — and co-star Julie Bowen is still surprised she was asked to return. The first film follows Adam Sandler's unlikely golf hero Happy, with Bowen as Virginia Venit, the pro golf tour PR director who serves as Happy's love interest. The official trailer for Happy Gilmore 2 was released at Netflix's Tudum event on Saturday, as Bowen told The Hollywood Reporter when she heard it was happening, 'I thought, 'Well I won't be in it.'' 'As a matter of fact my children told me, before I was even told officially that there was a Happy Gilmore sequel, my now 18-year-old said, 'Mom, I hear they're doing a sequel and he's with Sydney Sweeney as a cart girl.'' It was indeed a rumor online that Sweeney had been cast in the film, and though it ended up not being true, Bowen joked, 'I went, I'm hurt and I so respect that move. Of course, why wouldn't you? So when I got the call that I was actually in it, I was like, 'Are you sure? Come on.'' There will be plenty of new additions to the sequel though, with Bad Bunny, Margaret Qualley, Benny Safdie, Travis Kelce, Kym Whitley and Eminem all making appearances. Bowen revealed she is a Bad Bunny superfan and was particularly excited to have him on set. 'Seeing Bad Bunny on set I was just like, 'Oh, I can't actually look you in the eye, I'm going to have to walk away,' and I did. I think he was offended and I had to circle back and now I made it worse,' she teased. 'I'm the kind of person who doesn't want to meet her heroes because I think I'm just going to be a jackass.' New 'Happy Gilmore 2' trailer drops at Netflix Tudum fan fest with some familiar NJ places
A new movie trailer shows Adam Sandler's hockey-stick-swinging golfer Happy Gilmore returning in summer 2025, with New Jersey as his backdrop. Netflix revealed the new trailer for the highly anticipated comedy "Happy Gilmore 2" during its Tudum fan event on May 31, teasing a sequel packed with celebrity cameos and callbacks to the 1996 original. Shot across locations in towns including Hoboken, Clifton and Verona, the new movie brings Gilmore out of retirement with a new motivation: ballet school tuition for his daughter. The price tag? $300,000. Gilmore's plan? Take another shot at the pro circuit. The movie set for a July 25 release on Netflix reunites familiar faces from the first installment, including Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin, Julie Bowen as Virginia Venit, Kevin Nealon as Gary Potter and Ben Stiller as the menacing nursing home orderly Hal. The cast also includes Sandler's real-life daughters Sadie and Sunny, wife Jackie, and Bad Bunny in the role of Gilmore's caddie. In the trailer's opening, Sandler's Gilmore wipes out on the tee box while being watched by Eric André, Margaret Qualley and Martin Herlihy. The trailer also includes appearances by Post Malone, Travis Kelce, Maxwell Jacob Friedman, Stephen A. Smith, Becky Lynch, Ken Jennings and others. Sandler hinted at some of the cameos months ago, saying on the "Dan Patrick Show" in December that he filmed with Eminem for a day. 'He said a million things we can use and we are glad we had him on tape,' Sandler said at the time. Sandler co-wrote the script with longtime collaborator Tim Herlihy and brought in Kyle Newacheck to direct. Martin Herlihy, whose father co-wrote the original "Happy Gilmore," joined the cast alongside some fellow "Saturday Night Live" performers and golfers such as Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau, Nelly Korda, Jack Nicklaus, John Daly, Paige Spiranac and New Jersey native Scottie Scheffler. Golf courses like Fiddler's Elbow in Bedminster served as key locations. The movie also had temporary sets in Verona, Washington Township and The Oranges, among other New Jersey locations.
