Another hurdle for The Intern's Hindi remake? Deepika Padukone will not play the lead anymore, instead…

Hindustan Times3 days ago
Fans of Deepika Padukone will be disappointed on hearing this. A fresh report on Mid-Day suggests that she has backed out of the much-anticipated Hindi remake of hit Hollywood movie, The Intern (2015). However, there is still a way she will stay attached to it. Deepika Padukone will not act in the Hindi remake of The Intern, instead serving as a producer.
What's the latest with The Intern's Hindi remake?
Sources told the publication that Deepika will no longer act in the movie but will still be part of it as a producer. She was expected to take on Anne Hathaway's role in the movie, who hires a retired man (played by Robert DeNiro) as the intern at her company. Late actor Rishi Kapoor was to take on DeNiro's role, before his death in 2020. Later, Amitabh Bachchan came on board for the role.
'This time, Deepika will step away from acting in the film to serve solely as a producer, overseeing the creative and logistical reboot. A new leading lady is being cast to play the part she was once slated to perform,' said the source.
Deepika hopes to 'explore her career further as a creator'. The source said, 'The Intern is the first of five projects she plans to mount in the coming year. She is looking to tell stories that are globally relevant.'
More about The Intern
In The Intern, 70-year-old widower Ben Whittaker (DeNiro) joins a fast-growing online fashion startup as a senior intern. Initially met with skepticism by founder Jules Ostin (Anne), Ben's old-school charm, reliability, and wisdom soon win over the team. As he helps streamline operations and offers life advice, he becomes Jules's confidant, supporting her through personal and professional challenges.
What's next for Deepika?
Deepika was last seen in Fighter, Singham Again and Kalki 2898 AD, all releasing in 2024. Her next projects include King with Shah Rukh Khan and the sequel to Kalki 2898 AD.
Deepika was recently on a maternity break after the birth of her daughter Dua. She welcomed her with husband Ranveer Singh in September last year.

Akshay Oberoi ‘Guilty' Of Having ‘Misconception' About Janhvi Kapoor: ‘She's Read Kafka'

Akshay Oberoi recalls an incident that led him to believe that his Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari co-star Janhvi Kapoor hasn't had it easy. He lauds her for having 'no ego'. Janhvi Kapoor has often been at the receiving end of social media trolling due to the discourse surrounding nepotism. Being Sridevi's daughter isn't easy and Janhvi has often acknowledged this privilege and the criticism that comes along with it. Even then, she continues to be called out for having it easy and being served her debut on a silver platter. That's perhaps why she shocked the internet when she gave them a glimpse of her intellect as she discussed how she desires to see a debate between Mahatma Gandhi and BR Ambedkar on casteism. Now, speaking exclusively to News18 Showsha, her Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari co-star Akshay Oberoi says that he too 'might have been guilty' of having a misconception about her. Recalling an incident, he tells us, 'We were at a restaurant. I had ordered something and it took them some time to bring that to me. When the waiter finally came, he apologised to Janhvi and not me. I told her, 'It must be nice. Wow! Mera khaana nahi aaya but apology tumhe mil rahi hai.'" But what happened next changed his perception of Janhvi. 'These words just slipped out of my mouth and I didn't think so much about it. About an hour later, she came to me and told me that she wanted to share something with me. She realised that I felt bad but she reminded me that there's also a flip side to being who she is. Something had happened that morning and she was reminded of her mother and how great she is, by somebody, who was going to be working with us on that day," Akshay shares. He reveals that being compared to Sridevi and the high expectations that people have from her is something that Janhvi is still dealing with. 'She had been beating herself up for three hours before she reached the set. She kept thinking how she'll match up to her mother. That person had told her, 'I've worked with your mother 'x' number of times and now I'll be working with you. So, let's see what you, Sridevi's daughter, do today!' Janhvi told me that it's hard on both ends. And that hit me like a ton of bricks," Akshay states. In fact, the Fighter and Love Hostel actor says that getting to know Janhvi helped bust many myths about her. He lauds her for her humility and says, 'She has no ego, no airs." And what truly impressed him is that she's a voracious reader. 'Janhvi is very intelligent and well-read. You can talk to her about Kafka and Nietzsche. She knows them and has read about them," he says. Akshay further adds, 'There's a misconception we all carry about her. But there's struggle on both sides – for them to match up to the legends and for us to prove something. From that day on, I swore to myself that I won't just generalise and say that they've it easy and I've it harder. No one has it easy. Everyone faces difficulties. Sabka struggle alag hai." ‘War 2' advance booking report Day 1: Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR starrer on track to cross Rs 20 crore mark before August 14 release

With the clock ticking down to its August 14 release, 'War 2', starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, is charging ahead at the box office. The action-packed YRF Spy Universe entry is riding high on hype, and early figures indicate the film is poised for a Rs 20 crore-plus opening day. Advance Bookings According to a report on Sacnilk, the film has already registered an all-India advance booking gross of Rs 9.04 crore. When blocked seats are factored in, the tally surges to an impressive Rs 17.29 crore, a clear sign of the film's growing momentum as Independence Day weekend approaches. Format-Wise Performance The Hindi 2D version remains the top earner, with collections standing at Rs 5.56 crore. Including premium formats such as IMAX 2D, 4DX, and ICE, the Hindi version's earnings climb to Rs 6.18 crore. The Telugu dubbed version has pulled in an estimated Rs 3 crore, largely from its 2D screenings, while the Tamil version trails with approximately Rs 9.34 lakh. Lulutox Undo Comparison with 2019's War Although War 2's numbers are promising, it faces the challenge of matching its predecessor's record-setting debut. War (2019) opened to a massive Rs 53.35 crore and went on to collect Rs 166.25 crore over its first weekend, eventually amassing a staggering Rs 318.01 crore lifetime gross. Whether War 2 can replicate or surpass that benchmark will depend on its sustained performance post-release. Comparison with Coolie Meanwhile, the Rajiianth starrer Coolie, has taken the lead at the weekend box office, securing an impressive Rs 24.59 crore collection in advance ticket bookings. With the inclusion of blocked seats, the film's total collection rises to an estimated Rs 32.64 crore. Promising Weekend Despite the clash, War 2 and Coolie have managed to set up a Rs 50 crore weekend, just from advance ticket sales. With a day still to go, it remains to be seen how much the numbers rise. About The Film Directed by Ayan Mukerji, War 2 features Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, Kiara Advani , Ashutosh Rana, and Anil Kapoor in pivotal roles. With its star-studded cast, premium format screenings, and strategic Independence Day release, the film is well-positioned for a high-octane box office battle.
