‘Still brings me hope': why Submarine is my feelgood movie

The Guardian2 days ago

I remember the day anxiety took over my life. I was 12 years old and felt continually, grindingly nervous about everything and nothing. I had spent the morning in the student support office, coming down from a panic attack that had left me pinned to a classroom floor, heart pounding and tears streaming down my face. Over a post-recovery cup of tea and Jaffa Cakes, a pastoral adviser told me that if this was to become a regular occurrence, I would hit burnout by the end of term. The idea stuck.
Within my first few weeks at high school, I was diagnosed with generalised anxiety disorder – a condition characterised by excessive and persistent worry, according to the NHS. A perfectionist streak had spiralled into an acute sense of responsibility. I was an overly conscientious student; I felt I had to be better than everyone else and excel at my studies in order to prove my worth. I tried to do as much work as I could, as perfectly as possible, as a way to shore up low self-esteem.
It was during this state of unrest that Richard Ayoade's Submarine waltzed into my world. It might be a curious choice to name a film that traverses a troubled home life, too-much-too-young sexual experiences, and bullying as my 'feelgood' movie, but within its equally dark and peppy 97 minutes is a story about writing your own rules.
Adapted from the Joe Dunthorne novel, Submarine is touching, sweet and, crucially, very funny. Like its deep-thinking protagonist Oliver Tate, I was not very good at being a teenager. I worried I'd ruined my life when it had barely begun. The film follows Oliver's romance with classmate Jordana Bevan, a pyromaniac with a fearless sense of rebellion. He enjoys reading the dictionary; she likes to singe her partner's leg hairs with a lighted match.
Cooped up at home for days at a time, often too anxious to attend school, I first came across Submarine via Tumblr. I would spend hours in bed scrolling through the blogging website, which was awash with gifs of Oliver and Jordana. Their relationship, a true balancing of yin and yang energies, felt aspirational to young fans whose identities were still taking shape.
Early on in the film, Oliver becomes overwhelmed by a foreboding sense that he will not achieve anything in life. He indulges in gallows humour, narrating the visualisation of his own funeral – a candlelit vigil that will be filmed by a local news crew. While his misfit character sometimes leans into cliche (he reads Catcher in the Rye, of course) the film's expressive portrayal of anxiety felt validating. It illuminated many tensions that I instantly recognised, such as how mental illness can isolate an individual, leaving friends unsure how to help.
The way Oliver responds to situations can be extreme, but not illogical. A first kiss results in breathlessness. He hides in corridors, peeping at things he doesn't yet understand – gaining vignettes of grownup existence. Stepping outside of his bedroom is to trigger a mysterious, almost occult change in his confidence.
At 15, my life was a swirl of counselling sessions, insomnia, and weight loss. I was forced to drop half of my GCSEs, of which the remaining few were completed under separate invigilation. I was terrified, and beneath the fear, burning with shame. But as the months spooled on, I kept returning to Submarine whenever I needed to be reminded that there was a whole realm of possibility out there not reflected in the day-to-day that I knew.
As Oliver offers at one point, what happens during one's adolescence becomes imprinted in the memory and we can spend years later 'revisiting the same handful of images'. I vowed to take another route. It was Alex Turner's heart-rending soundtrack that instead offered me a way forward, with songs that speak to maintaining a sense of selfhood in difficult circumstances.
'Tomorrow, I'll be stronger/Running colourful, no longer just in black and white,' he sings on Hiding Tonight. That's when it clicked: resentment could turn into resolve. A calmer, more emotionally stable future didn't have to feel impenetrable. Dozens upon dozens of viewings have since followed; the film still brings me hope and unfettered joy as an adult.
A few years into my career, I interviewed Turner at an east London pub. I was 21, still taking gentle steps towards getting better while making a living out of a love of music that essentially started with him. On the tube home, beaming and overjoyed, I pressed play on the Submarine soundtrack. In it I heard not nostalgia but the sound of my transformation, from a timorous, unwell girl to the journalist I became, to what I am still becoming now.
Submarine is available to watch on Amazon Prime in the US and UK and to rent digitally in Australia

The beauty donned a patterned top and a pair of denim jeans while a black cowgirl hat was placed on top of her flowy locks. Her son Damian, 23, showed his support for their relationship by also a red heart emoji. Elizabeth shares the model with ex Steven Bing. So glad to see you so happy and smiling Billy Ray.' In the caption, the actress typed out: 'Happy birthday to me! This year has already been a wild ride; my 30th year of working with the Estée Lauder Companies, my 30th year as the Global Ambassador of the @esteelaudercompanies Breast Cancer Campaign, the 20th anniversary of @elizabethhurleybeach and… I'm in love♥️♥️♥️. 'Feeling very blessed and grateful for having the best friends & family in the world ♥️ pic taken this afternoon… in my birthday suit xxx.' Her son Damian shared an additional comment by writing, 'Hahahah I LOVE YOU happy birthday mama xxx.' Two months earlier, Billy and Elizabeth unveiled their romance as they cozied up together in a photo while celebrating the Easter holiday. Last month in May, the pair made their red carpet debut in Rome while attending the Orizzonti | Rosso Exhibition Opening Dinner together - with her son Damian also joining the couple. At the time, Billy opted for an all-black ensemble while Hurley turned heads wearing a hot pink gown that clung to her toned figure. The singer had uploaded snippets from their time at the event to his Instagram page and wrote in the caption, 'With my beautiful girlfriend in Rome ❤️.' Also in May, The Royals actress made an appearance at the Breast Cancer Research Foundation 2025 Hot Pink Party in New York City - and gave an update about their relationship during an exclusive interview with She gushed that she is 'very happy in my new relationship' and added, 'Billy's a lovely man and we make each other very happy.' Ahead of her birthday, a source told The Sun that Cyrus 'is besotted with Liz. 'He can't believe this chance he's been given and he's throwing everything at it, including this very expensive birthday trip to the Caribbean. He thinks she's the most beautiful woman in the world and feels incredibly lucky.' The insider added that Billy 'spoils her rotten with gifts but mostly they just enjoy hanging out, listening to records and making each other laugh.' Cyrus has also previously broken his silence on their relationship on Apple Music Country's The Ty Bentli Show in April. The pair's relationship began following his divorce from Firerose - and his third marriage. He had met Elizabeth on set of the 2022 movie Christmas In Paradise and as he was navigating through the split from Firerose, he received a message from Hurley. 'I felt like, "Wow, can life get any harder? Can it get any tougher?" For me, at a certain point it was like, you can't get knocked down any flatter than laying on your back when life is kicking you. And in this moment... a friend reached out.' Billy then tried to recall the contents of the message and explained she had said, 'Hey, it looks like life might be a little bit tough and just wanted you to know I'm in your corner; you've got a friend in your corner.' When he first received the text, the performer revealed that at first he didn't know who the message was from. 'So, I text back, I go, "Who is this?" And it's like, "Elizabeth Hurley." Of all the people to reach out to me in that second that maybe I needed most… this friend who made me laugh.' He later gushed that the actress is 'a great human being' and also 'impressively brilliant.' 'She reminds me a lot of Dolly Parton. She's a very smart businesswoman. If you can laugh together, you can make it through everything.' The star also reflected on how he has also gotten close to his girlfriend's son Damian as well. 'It's great that God brought them into my life when he did. It's just a good thing. It's been a long time since I've been this happy.' Miley Cyrus also broke her silence on her father's new relationship while talking to New York Times' The Interview podcast late last month. 'As I've gotten older, I respect my parents as individuals instead of as parents because, you know, my mom really loved my dad for her whole life,' she stated. 'I took on some of my mom's hurt as my own, because it hurt her more than it hurt me as an adult. So I owned a lot of her pain as mine.' The former Disney channel star added, 'But now that my mom is so in love with my stepdad, Dom, who I completely adore, and now that I see my dad finding happiness outside of that too. 'I can love them both as individuals instead of as a kind of parental pairing. I'm being an adult about it.' Miley's mom Tish Cyrus was previously married to Billy from 1993 until their divorce was finalized in 2023. That same year, she married Prison Break actor Dominic Purcell. The Flowers hitmaker also squashed rumors of a feud with her family and issued a statement on her Instagram stories which read: 'I rarely comment on rumors, but my mama and I are too tight for anything to ever come between us. 'She's my best friend. Like a lot of moms, she doesn't know how to work her phone and somehow unfollowed me - simple, coincidental and uninteresting.' The Flowers hitmaker also squashed rumors of a feud with her family and issued a statement on her Instagram stories which read: 'I rarely comment on rumors, but my mama and I are too tight for anything to ever come between us' Miley also commented on her relationship with Billy and added, 'My dad and I have had our challenges over the years. Now, in my 30s, family is my priority above all else. I'm at peace knowing bridges have been built and time has done a lot of healing.' The songstress concluded with: 'Grateful for the good health and love that flows through my family.' Billy shares daughter Miley as well as Noah, 25, and Braison, 31, with Tish. He also became stepfather to her other two children from a previous relationship: Brandi, 38, and Trace, 36.

Footy star Lewis Brown relives the shattering moment he found out his dad had taken his own life - then learned his grandfather and great grandfather had died the same way

Former NRL star Lewis Brown has opened up about the heartbreaking discovery of his father's suicide - and the later gut-wrenching news that his grandfather and great grandfather had died the same way. The 38-year-old, who played 198 NRL games and 15 Tests for New Zealand, has spoken about a phone call he received in 2016 to inform him that his dad had passed away. 'I was unfortunate enough to get a phone call, hopped off the field, by my older sister, my only sibling, and it was a phone call that changed my life ... what I valued, and also what life was,' Brown told News Corp. 'That phone call was that he'd taken his own life. I remember being at Liverpool in the hotel bar with Shaun Johnson and his partner, just being very confused about what it meant. 'I'd never really come across the topic of suicide, obviously I'd heard of it but at that time it wasn't talked about either.' Brown, who didn't see much of his father growing up, flew home to Christchurch to be with his mum. While at the funeral, the footballer learned some other shocking news. 'That week, sort of leading up to the funeral was a bit of an odd one,' he said. 'I got to the funeral and walked in and I have a half brother who I hadn't seen since I was four. 'Then as the day went on, I found out my dad, my grandfather and great-grandfather had all taken their own lives. 'And the only thing that we share in common was the same middle name and that's Earl.' 'And the only thing that we share in common was the same middle name and that's Earl.' Brown went on to explain that he never really acknowledged his father while growing up and would call him by his first name instead of 'dad'. 'We'd lost connection for nearly 10 years and during that day, the funeral, people would come up to me and say, "Your dad was so proud of you",' he said. Brown (pictured playing for Manly) said he ran from his middle name 'for 31 years' until he turned a corner and used it as a positive in his life 'Say, "He was always at the pub watching you on a Saturday, Sunday". The thing is he didn't want to be a burden on me; like most males, he didn't want to be a burden. 'Just because he'd seen me on TV, he thought I'd gone off and was living my dream. He just didn't want to be a burden or reach out and no one told me he was dealing with depression. 'I never even knew the history of my grandfather either ... I was just off living my dream and never had any contact from that side.' Shortly after Brown retired in 2019, he decided to start a luxury clothing line called 'Earls Collection'. In six years, Brown's business has thrived and his clothing has been worn by NFL, NBA and NRL stars. 'One day I was up in Paddington ... I remember driving up Oxford Street and I stopped on the side of the road and I was like, "I'm going to call it Earls Collection", he said. 'I've run away from this name for so long, this is the reason why I retired, this is a new chapter in my life. 'I ran from the name for 31 years, let's just give it a go.'

Miley Cyrus reveals how she mended 'messy' family relationships without therapy amid decade of drama

is unpacking a decade's worth of family drama and trauma and reveals how she mended all of her fences. The 32-year-old star was born in the spotlight, the daughter of country music legend Billy Ray Cyrus and Tish Cyrus, who found fame herself at a young age as star of the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana. She grew up to be a global pop star in her own right, though she revealed on Tuesday's episode of Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky, her road to fame was filled with family strife. She teased the whole family went through a, 'really difficult, dark decade' but they were able to get through it. Cyrus revealed on the podcast - which also featured the singer explaining what WAP is to the 51-year-old Lewinsky - that the family was able to mend their fences without therapy. 'We're so messy, we didn't even do any of that,' Cyrus joked of her family struggles, revealing the reason a therapist wasn't involved. 'Just to get each other into a room to get to counseling would have been a war,' Cyrus admitted. She told Lewinsky that at one point of the 'dark decade,' half of her family members were not speaking to each other. Cyrus admitted she, 'had a lot of loyalty' to her mother Tish, who split with father Billy Ray back in 2022 after nearly 30 years of marriage and sharing Miley, Braison, 31 and Noah, 25. Before their official split and divorce that was finalized in 2023, Miley said that her parents were on-and-off, as she revealed how that affected her. '(I) watched what happens when you don't clean things up as they're happening,' Miley admitted. 'They really do stack. And then all of the sudden you go, "Oh my God, it's been 10 years and this is a mess I barely even know how to start. This is emotional hoarding,"' she admitted. Ultimately, the singer, 'cleaned all that up,' during a, 'really important part of [her] year … putting those lines of communication back together.' 'I just kind of busted through the pile that stacked and just [went], "I'm here, you're here, let's start by having a good time together and then as we start bringing some happiness and joy into each other's life, then we'll be in a better place to have these conversations,"' she admitted. Cyrus admitted she, 'had a lot of loyalty' to her mother Tish, who split with father Billy Ray back in 2022 after nearly 30 years of marriage and sharing Miley, Braison, 31 and Noah, 25 She also admitted it, 'was easier to (wave) a white flag' than go through counseling with someone else. The singer added she likes others to decide they, 'like the way she's functioning' and attempt to 'mimic' it. She will be addressing the family drama more directly on her forthcoming album, teasing that a song called Secrets. Cyrus said the song is about her wanting her dad, 'to feel safe enough to tell [her] the things that were damning and damaging to the family.'
