Indian benchmark shares rise for fifth straight session on IT, consumer gains

India's equity benchmarks rose for a fifth straight session on Wednesday as tech stocks rallied ahead of the Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole symposium and as consumer shares gained on hopes of a demand boost from the proposed tax reforms.
The Nifty 50 added 0.28% to 25,050.55, while the BSE Sensex rose 0.26% to 81,857.84.
Both benchmarks have added about 2.3% and 2%, respectively, in five sessions.
Optimism over the proposed goods and services tax (GST) reforms, easing India-China trade concerns, and S&P's upgrade of India's sovereign outlook have all buoyed market sentiment, said Gaurav Garg, analyst at Lemonn Markets Desk.
On the day, nine out of 16 major sectors advanced. The broader small-cap and mid-cap indices rose 0.3% and 0.5%, respectively.
IT stocks, which earn a significant share of revenue from the U.S., climbed 2.7% ahead of the Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole symposium on Aug. 21-23.
Investors widely expect a 25-basis-point Fed rate cut next month, a move that is seen supporting U.S. growth and reviving client spending for Indian technology firms.
India tax cut plan boosts shares; Nifty gains most in seven weeks
'A dovish tone from Fed Chair Jerome Powell could provide a positive trigger for Nifty and offset negative sentiment surrounding tariff developments,' said analysts led by Dharmesh Shah of ICICI Securities.
Consumer shares rose 1.4%, taking their three-session gains to 3.7%, on expectations that lower GST rates will boost demand and earnings.
Financials slipped 0.4%, limiting the benchmarks' advance.
Gaming-linked firms Nazara Tech and Onmobile Global fell 12.9% and 3.4%, after Reuters reported India planned to ban online money-based games.
Micro-irrigation stocks such as Jain Irrigation and Mahindra EPC climbed 2.4% and 17.8% on hopes of zero GST on farm equipment.
Fertiliser makers Chambal Fertilisers, Rashtriya Chemicals and Paradeep Phosphates extended gains, jumping between 2.3% and 5.4%, on improved supply prospects from talks with China.
Sula Vineyards gained 2.5% after CNBC-TV18 reported the winemaker is looking to enter the premium spirits market.

Chinese FM Wang Yi arrives in Islamabad for three-day visit

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived in Islamabad on Wednesday for a three-day official visit at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, the Foreign Office said. Dar received Wang at Nur Khan Airbase, where senior officials from the Foreign Ministry and the Chinese Embassy were present. Children in traditional attire presented flowers to the visiting dignitary. During the visit, the Sixth Pakistan-China Foreign Ministers' Strategic Dialogue will be held in Islamabad, co-chaired by Dar and Wang. The talks are expected to cover political, economic and security cooperation. Wang's arrival precedes Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's scheduled visit to Beijing later this month for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, where he is expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping. Earlier, Wang attended the Sixth Trilateral Foreign Ministers' Dialogue in Kabul alongside Dar and Afghanistan's Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi. At the meeting, the three countries reaffirmed their commitment to deepen regional cooperation, including the extension of the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) into Afghanistan. According to a joint statement, the three sides said the corridor's extension would enhance trade, transit and development opportunities for Afghanistan while linking it more closely with regional markets. They also pledged to strengthen cooperation in counterterrorism and drug control, as well as collaboration in health, education, culture and connectivity.

US stocks mostly down as markets digest earnings ahead of Fed minutes

NEW YORK: Wall Street's major indexes mostly pulled back early Wednesday as investors assessed key retail earnings while awaiting the minutes of the central bank's most recent policy meeting. About 15 minutes into trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.1 percent to 44,984.72, but the broad-based S&P 500 Index dropped 0.3 percent to 6,390.30. The tech-focused Nasdaq Composite Index lost 0.9 percent to 21,120.54. These came as US retailer Target topped earnings expectations Wednesday, even as its sales slipped, while home improvement firm Lowe's similarly beat expectations too. But Target's shares were down 8.7 percent in early trading after the results, and as it named a new chief executive. Lowe's shares, meanwhile, rose 1.0 percent. Wall Street falls on Jackson Hole jitters The tech sector meanwhile remained under pressure, said Art Hogan of B. Riley Wealth Management. US tech shares slipped on Tuesday amid warnings that excitement surrounding artificial intelligence could be inflated. The main focus this week, however, is really Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech Friday morning at an annual central bankers' gathering in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Hogan said. Markets will be closely watching Powell's remarks for signs of whether the Fed is likely to cut interest rates in September, as officials balance between inflation risks and weakness in the jobs market. But Hogan warned that Powell has tended to be 'reticent to predict what the Fed does at any upcoming meetings,' meaning investors could be disappointed. In the meantime, observers will be keeping an eye on the Fed's meeting minutes due Wednesday afternoon.
