Troubled footy star Jamarra Ugle-Hagan opens up on mental health struggles in harrowing detail: 'I hit rock bottom and found basement'

Daily Mail4 hours ago

Western Bulldogs forward Jamarra Ugle-Hagan has revealed that he 'frequently' contemplated taking his own life, as he opened up about his mental health struggles in a harrowing discussion.
Ugle-Hagan fronted the Dogs' playing group on Monday, in a move that could open the door for the troubled forward to return to action this year.
The 23-year-old also took part in a light training session but could still be weeks away from a possible playing comeback at VFL level.
Ugle-Hagan hasn't played a game this season while dealing with personal issues, and has been unable to regularly train with the Bulldogs since late last year.
The 2020 No.1 draft pick recently visited a health retreat in northern NSW in an effort to get his life and career back on track.
'All the noises actually sent me to a rehab facility for my mental health,' Ugle-Hagan told Mitch Robinson and Rhys Mathieson on the Rip Through It podcast.

'It got to a point where I had to give my car to a mate so I couldn't drive, I just didn't trust myself driving.
'There were times when I would think about – to be honest with you – just not even worth even living.
'I went through a struggle where I didn't want to leave the house. I hit rock bottom, and found basement.
'Definitely (there were suicidal thoughts). Suicidal thoughts would come pretty frequently.
'Especially when I felt like I was on my own the whole time. The way I was isolated and put out in public.'
The young footy star says the health retreat has changed his life.
'It takes balls to talk in a group but once you do it, it is f**king amazing, it feels good and they have answers for you,' he said.
'You think you are alone and no one understands.
The talented forward (pictured with ex-girlfriend Olivia Kelly) is now looking at a possible comeback through the VFL after taking a huge step with his club
'But when you speak up and hear people's stories it makes you feel so much better hearing people's stories and knowing they're going through the same thing you are.'
Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge last week raised the prospect of Ugle-Hagan resuming his 67-game AFL career with the club.
Ugle-Hagan says he can't wait to get back on the field.
'I want to play footy. I can't wait to play footy,' he said.
'I want to kick a f**king goal in front of those crowds.
'I have been watching every single Bulldogs game. I have been supporting them, been watching them.
'I will go to games at the end of the year. I genuinely want to play one more (game), I want to play some games.
'It's going to be grouse.'
Ugle-Hagan led the Bulldogs with a career-best 43 goals in 22 appearances last year, but has not featured at any level since the elimination final defeat to Hawthorn.
His return to the club comes with the Bulldogs (7-6) sitting ninth on the ladder, one win outside the top eight, ahead of a clash with Richmond on Sunday.

Opener Sam Konstas makes heartfelt admission ahead of return to Australian Test team

Freshly recalled Australia teenager Sam Konstas admits his emotions got to him during his bold Test debut, but he has vowed to return a stronger player. Konstas will return for his first Test since the Border-Gavaskar Trophy decider in January when Australia face the West Indies in a three-match series starting in Barbados on June 26. The 19-year-old will replace Marnus Labuschagne, who was dropped after being trialled as an opener in the shock World Test Championship final loss against South Africa. Konstas stormed on to the international scene by ramping India superstar Jasprit Bumrah on his way to an unforgettable 60 last Boxing Day. But he was overlooked for the two Tests in Sri Lanka earlier this year, then the WTC decider at Lord's last week. Selectors have brought Konstas back into the fold for the Caribbean tour, planning ahead of this summer's Ashes. 'The emotions probably got to me with the crowd,' Konstas told reporters in Barbados of his whirlwind debut. 'It was good reflecting and having a bit of time off, trying to strengthen my game. 'I feel like I trust people that I work with and they understand my game. 'I'm not trying to prove to anyone how I'm going to play. I just want to be myself and obviously understand when to take the game on. 'It's a dream come true, to be honest. '(To be) 19 years old, playing for your country, travelling the world, getting to experience different cultures and against the best players as well … I'm lucky to be where I am.' Labuschagne makes way for the first time since the 2019 Ashes, paying the price for an underwhelming previous WTC cycle. The 30-year-old was the top-ranked Test batter in the world as recently as two years ago, but has averaged just 27.82 since then. As well as Labuschagne, Australia will also be without Steve Smith, who is recovering from a dislocated finger suffered during a crucial moment in the WTC final. 'Obviously it's a tough team to crack and (it has) got legends of the game in that team,' Konstas said. 'Very excited for the opportunity, and hopefully I can grab it with both hands. 'I've been training really hard and I understand the reasons why they picked (recently). 'I'm just trying to be in the present moment, trying to focus on a few key areas with my batting coach, and feel like I've come a long way.

Watch the bizarre moment a seagull is KO'd during footy match: 'One in a million shot'

In a bizarre moment during an Aussie Rules match in Victoria, an unlucky seagull became an unexpected casualty when it was hit by a ball, leaving players and footy fans stunned. The Seaford Tigers took on the Somerville Eagles on Saturday afternoon in the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League - and the big talking point afterwards was the welfare of a seagull that got collected by a drop punt. The incident occurred when a Somerville player launched a kick towards goal and struck the seagull flying past. The bird dropped from the sky with a thud onto the grass. A Somerville player picked up the unconscious seagull and carried it off the pitch. Footage of the incident was uploaded to social media, in which the poster noted: 'I've seen some stuff in footy, but this is probably up there with the weirdest.' The clip was shared far and wide, with many fans saying they hadn't seen anything like it. *My club but not my video* Somerville V Seaford today I've seen some stuff in footy, but this is probably up there with the weirdest… @AFL @PaulAmy375 — Carteagle (@Carteagle) June 21, 2025 'One in a million shot,' replied one X user. 'Holy cow that's crazy,' said another. Others could see the funny side of the bizarre incident. 'Great smother,' posted one. '3-week concussion rule,' joked another 'Another rough day for Steven Seagull,' replied a third.
