UP govt acquires 600 acres in Gorakhpur for new industrial township

While Gida has acquired 600 acres for the township in the 17 villages, the acquisition process is ongoing to increase the land inventory

The Uttar Pradesh (UP) government has acquired 600 acres in Gorakhpur, the political stronghold of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, to attract investment and accelerate industrial growth in the state's eastern region (Purvanchal). The site has been slated for the development of a modern industrial township under the Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority. The proposed 'Dhuriyapar Industrial Township' or 'Greater Gida' aims to increase investments in Eastern UP, which lags Western UP. Gida Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Anuj Malik said the master plan for the township has been approved, and the land allotment process —spanning two industrial sectors — will begin soon. While Gida has acquired 600 acres for the township in the 17 villages, the acquisition process is ongoing to increase the land inventory.
Leading companies, including the Adani group, are interested in setting up their units in the Greater Gida enclave. According to officials, the Adani group was considering setting up a cement factory under the ACC brand. Shree Cement and Keyaan Distillery have also sought parcels for their greenfield projects in the township. The Yogi-led government was also planning to establish an electronic manufacturing cluster within the township, officials added. Once completed, the Dhuriyapar Industrial Township would become one of the largest industrial land banks in Purvanchal. The recently inaugurated 91 km Gorakhpur Link Expressway will also boost the prospects of the upcoming industrial hub. At the UP Global Investors Summit (GIS) in February 2023, the state had secured fresh investment proposals worth ~40 trillion. The state now plans to host the GIS 2.0 in the current financial year. Major private investor, SLMG Beverages, a Coca-Cola bottling partner, was planning a phased investment of ~8,000 crore to expand its supply network, the company's deputy CEO Rahul Kumar said. SLMG holds nearly 50 per cent of the beverage market share in UP, and operates 7 bottling plants across eastern and western regions. The growing network of expressways, airports, proposed logistics and export hubs has contributed to a marked improvement in the 'ease of doing business' perception, thus translating into growing private investment. Besides manufacturing, the Yogi government is also promoting the services sectors, viz. tourism and information technology (IT) sectors, for boosting socioeconomic development and creating jobs.

BEST credit society fraud probe: EOW begins inquiry into ₹12.41-crore Lonavala property deal; Sena (UBT)-MNS calls it political vendetta

MUMBAI: With less than a week to go before the keenly watched BEST Employees' Credit Society elections, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police has launched a preliminary enquiry against eight senior office-bearers of the society over alleged irregularities in the purchase of a Lonavala property. The inquiry adds to a parallel probe by the state cooperation department, fuelling political tensions between the newly allied Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) on one side and the BJP-led Mahayuti on the other. BEST credit society fraud probe: EOW begins inquiry into ₹ 12.41-crore Lonavala property deal; Sena (UBT)-MNS calls it political vendetta The credit society — controlled by the Sena (UBT)'s BEST Kamgar Sena and now in alliance with the MNS for the August 18 polls — is accused of paying ₹18.04 crore for a rest house in Lonavala, well above the ready reckoner rate of ₹5.63 crore, allegedly causing a loss of ₹12.41 crore to members. The complainant, BEST employee and society member Rajendra Gore, alleges the purchase violated cooperative rules, including acquiring property outside the society's jurisdiction without the registrar's permission. The EOW inquiry names chairman Kirtan Kori, secretary Umesh Sarang, directors Bhiwaji Sawant, Raju Sasane, Bhaskar Toraskar, Pramod Rane, former chairman Sanjay Bhagare, and CEO Lalit Parab — all affiliated with the Sena (UBT). Police officials confirmed that those named are being summoned for questioning. This latest action follows a notice dated August 13 from the divisional joint registrar of cooperative societies, appointing an inquiry team to examine the society's 2024-25 records. Separately, the EOW is also investigating a complaint by Vivekanand Ghag alleging ₹24 crore in irregularities. Sena (UBT) and MNS leaders have dismissed the charges as a political ploy. 'Since the Thackeray brothers joined hands for the BEST credit society polls, the whole state is watching. Suddenly, there are allegations. Earlier there were no complaints,' said Kori, who previously headed the Utkarsh Panel. BEST Kamgar Sena president Suhas Samant accused BJP MLC Prasad Lad of instigating the probes to create 'confusion among voters', noting that the society recently earned an 'A' grade in a government audit. Lad, however, defended the inquiries, saying, 'If there are complaints of irregularities, how can we keep quiet?' He insisted that both the cooperation department and the EOW are acting on specific complaints and evidence. The political stakes are unusually high for what is typically a low-profile cooperative poll. The Sena (UBT) will contest 18 of the 21 seats, the MNS two, and the BEST SC/ST Employees Welfare Association one. If victorious, the MNS will also get a nominated director post. The Mahayuti's BJP and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena are contesting as the opposition. The elections mark the first time the Thackeray cousins' parties are contesting together in any poll, seen by both camps as a test run for a broader civic election alliance — and by rivals as a potential threat worth disrupting.

Anna Canteens a lifeline for Vizag low-income workers

Visakhapatnam: Anna Canteens in Visakhapatnam have emerged as a major success since their relaunch in Sep last year. As of July 2025, nearly 65 lakh meals have been served across the 25 canteens in the city, where meals are offered at a nominal price of Rs 5. About 24,950 people dine at these canteens daily. Located near high-traffic areas and hospitals, the canteens have become a key support system for daily wage workers, low-income employees, and unemployed youth preparing for competitive exams in the city. They are also a boon for the floating population, especially those visiting Vizag for medical or other short-term purposes, who would otherwise spend about Rs 100 per meal even at modest restaurants. Launched by the previous TDP govt in 2018 as part of a state-wide welf are effort, the scheme was discontinued in 2019 by the YSRCP govt after it came to power in the state. As promised in its 2024 election manifesto, the TDP-led NDA govt revived the scheme soon after returning to power. In Visakhapatnam, 25 canteens reopened under the program, with Rs 3.3 crore allocated for their renovation. Before their initial rollout in 2018, the govt had sent a delegation of civic officials to study the operations of Amma Canteens in Chennai and Annapurna Canteens in Hyderabad. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Seniors are going crazy for these comfy, stylish, easy-on shoes Ultra-Comfortable Shoes Undo The visit helped shape the guidelines and operational framework for Andhra Pradesh's own version of subsidised canteens. GVMC mayor P Srinivasa Rao said about 65 lakh meals have been served through these canteens in just nine months. "People have expressed satisfaction with the quality of breakfast, lunch, and dinner. GVMC officials, along with the commissioner, are regularly monitoring operations and collecting public feedback to ensure efficient service," said the mayor. Local vendor Dukka Suribabu, who sells fruits near MVP Rythu Bazaar, said he often eats at the nearby Anna Canteen. "Offering a meal at just Rs 5 is a huge help for people like us who can't afford restaurant prices. Even roadside eateries in MVP Colony charge no less than Rs 60 for a basic meal," said Suribabu. An electronic token system is in place to manage meal distribution. Beneficiaries must present Aadhaar credentials for token issuance. In the absence of Aadhaar card, fingerprints or facial recognition data are collected for future records. Each canteen spans approximately 750 square feet and is designed to serve food to at least 350 people at a time. The canteens serve three idlis, chutney, and sambar as breakfast from 7:30 am to 10 am three days a week, and puri or pongal with kurma on the remaining days. Lunch is served from 12 pm to 3 pm, and dinner from 7:30 pm to 9 pm, which include rice, curry, dal, sambar, curd, and chutney. Special rice is served once a week. The canteens remain closed on Sundays. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). It's only a matter of time before Trump blinks on tariff: Chris Wood

Christopher Wood suggests buying Indian equities despite US tariffs. He believes Trump will eventually reverse the tariffs. Wood highlights India's geopolitical importance and notes the unusual nature of the tariffs. He mentions India's underperformance in equities and links the second tariff tranche to India's Russian oil purchases. Wood also observes the US Federal Reserve's potential rate cut in September. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Mumbai: Jefferies' global head of equity strategy, Christopher Wood, said the Trump administration's imposing a 50% tariff on Indian imports is not a reason to sell Indian equities. Instead, it's a reason to buy them since "it is only a matter of time before Trump backs off the stance, which is not in America's interest.""It is worth noting that the track record makes it clear that it pays to stand up to the Donald," said Wood in his latest 'Greed & Fear' said the Trump administration's decision to impose an additional 25% tariff, taking the total levy to 50%, on Indian goods is "somewhat unusual" given India's relatively small trade surplus with the US and its "very important geopolitical relationship" with second tranche of 25% tariffs appeared linked to New Delhi's purchase of Russian oil."China has been buying much more oil from Russia but has not been sanctioned in the same way," he said. "The singling out of India in this fashion is not what most people would have predicted."According to Wood, Donald Trump has succeeded in bringing China, Russia, India, and Brazil together like never before."Indeed, BRICS as a grouping has been regalvanised."Wood said India's equities had recorded the biggest underperformance relative to other markets in 15 years in the 12 months to July. He attributed the weakness to "very high valuations" and "a heavy schedule of equity issuance."According to him, it is too late to cut India with valuations now back near the 10-year average 63% Price to Earnings (PE) ratio premium over emerging market said the slightly better-than-anticipated July inflation data has marginally lifted expectations of the US Federal Reserve easing. The base case remains for a rate cut by the American central bank in September and for the US dollar to remain in a downtrend."Still, for a data-dependent Fed not willing to project forward, which is more or less where the Powell-led Fed has been of late, there is still an argument to stay on hold since the reality is that reported inflation is still well above the 2% YoY target," he said the prime driver of the Trump administration's criticism of Jerome Powell is not concerns about the state of the economy, but rather to get the cost of debt servicing down.
