On3 shares coaching hire grade of Ben McCollum to Iowa basketball
Ben McCollum is off and running as Iowa's new head men's basketball coach.
The 43-year-old sold forward Cooper Koch on withdrawing his name from the transfer portal and returning to Iowa. Then, McCollum signed five former Drake Bulldogs to Iowa in guards Bennett Stirtz, Kael Combs, Isaia Howard and in forwards Tavion Banks and Cam Manyawu.
As McCollum continues to reshape Iowa's roster, other major coaching vacancies around the country have been filled.
With more clarity nationally, On3 released its coaching carousel grades. Iowa hiring McCollum earned an A- grade from On3's James Fletcher III.
Iowa made the bold choice to capitalize on a rare influx of Iowa-connected head coaches atop the college basketball landscape by moving on from long-time leader Fran McCaffery. The Hawkeyes now turn to a perennial winner across multiple levels, Ben McCollum, who will bring a change of pace they hope can break through the difficult Big Ten standings.
After backing up four Division II national championships with an NCAA Tournament run at Drake, McCollum quickly moved toward the top of coaching hot boards across the country. The biggest questions facing his jump to Drake were squashed early. However, with another jump, questions about his ability to recruit at a high level and utilize resources to handle yet another jump in competition remain. - Fletcher, On3.
McCollum led Drake to Missouri Valley regular season and conference tournament titles during his lone season in Des Moines. The Bulldogs finished with a 31-4 record and upset No. 6 seed Missouri in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, 67-57, before falling to third-seeded Texas Tech in the round of 32.
Stirtz was named the Missouri Valley Conference Larry Bird Player of the Year after averaging 19.2 points, 5.7 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game while shooting 49.8% from the field and 39.5% from 3-point range.
While McCollum is indeed making another jump up, Iowa fans should be encouraged that McCollum has won everywhere that he's been.
Indiana also earned an A- grade for hiring former Drake and West Viriginia head coach Darian DeVries as its new coach. Minnesota likewise received an A- grade for hiring Colorado State's Niko Medved. NC State earned an A+ for hiring McNeese head coach Will Wade as the new head coach of the Wolfpack.

Veteran race car driver Robbie Brewer, 53, died following a crash during a race Aug. 9 at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina – his daughter confirmed in a social media post. Courtney Marquette wrote that her father was a mentor and best friend to her in a tribute posted to Facebook on the morning of Aug. 10. 'There wasn't much my dad couldn't fix/do when it came to his cars & racing was his absolute life which was no secret to anyone,' Marquette wrote. 'He left this world doing what he loved but it was just way way too soon.' FloRacing reported that Brewer's car veered towards the outside wall in the center of turns three and four with four laps remaining in a race in the Sportsman division. 'Unfortunately, I had a very direct line of sight into Brewer's vehicle,' Tom Radulovic, who was in the stadium as a fan when the crash occurred, told the Winston-Salem Journal. 'When they put him on the stretcher, I was able to see his hands, looking for that little wave athletes often give. There was no movement. My heart sank.' Bowman Gray Stadium said in a statement provided to the Journal and the Associated Press that Brewer was taken to an area hospital following 'an on-track medical incident.' 'Robbie was a talented and passionate racer, and highly respected competitor among his peers. Our thoughts and prayers are with Robbie's family and friends at this time,' the statement reads. USA TODAY has reached out to the track for the statement and did not receive an immediate response. The Journal reported that Brewer's death was the first at the track since 2002. Driver Brad Lewis, whose race shop is close to where Brewer lived, told the Journal that Brewer was 'like a big brother' and added that he was 'a wheelman through and through.' 'I'm bet everybody in that pit area has a Robbie story and that's a testament to what he meant to that place and to all of us who compete over there,' Lewis said. Randy Smith, who has worked at the stadium for 16 years and was the track's chief flagman Saturday night, told the newspaper that, 'I don't think there is one person that can say anything bad about Robbie.' Brewer was an 11-time winner in the Sportsman division at Bowman Gray and made 311 career starts at the historic stadium across all divisions, according to FloRacing. The racing outlet noted that Brewer was twice a 602 Modified Tour champion and a 602 Super Limited (Late Model) Series champion. Marquette said in her tribute that her father had 'a smile that was contagious' and an offbeat sense of humor.

Former Spartan defensive back waived by Chicago Bears

Former Michigan State football defensive back Ameer Speed came to the Spartans from Georgia in the transfer portal. The Jacksonville (FL) native played for MSU in 2022 after spending the first four years of his career with the Bulldogs, where he won a National Championship. Following his collegiate career, Speed was drafted in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. Now, trying to make a career for himself in the professional ranks, Speed is looking to latch on with an NFL franchise. Speed spent his first two seasons with the Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts, and had most recently signed with the Chicago Bears, but it appears that his time in the NFC North has come to a quick end. The Bears waived the former Spartan on Monday, ending his training camp in Chicago.
