Putrada Ekadashi 2025: The Vrat Katha of King Mahajita
According to Drik Panchang, the Putrada
Ekadashi Vrat Katha
dates back to the Dvapara Yuga. It speaks of Mahishmati's King Mahajita, who was a just and virtuous ruler but deeply saddened by the absence of a child. Despite his noble rule and virtuous actions, the king remained childless and expressed his sorrow before his court.

'I have not committed any sins. I have never taken wealth unjustly from my people, nor have I caused them any harm. I have always honoured the Gods and Brahmins. I treat my subjects as if they were my own children. I have never been jealous and have always acted fairly. The laws in my kingdom are not made to create fear, but to ensure justice. Despite all of this, I suffer. I do not understand why. I ask you all to help me find the cause of my suffering. Will I ever be free of this pain in this lifetime?' said the king.
To find an answer, his ministers sought the wisdom of Maharishi Lomasha in the forest.

Sage Lomasha's counsel and the power of the fast
The ministers greeted the sage with folded hands: 'O revered one, we are truly blessed to be in your presence.'
The sage responded, 'Honourable minister, I am pleased by your humility and conduct. Please tell me the reason for your visit. I will do my best to help, for our bodies are meant to perform good deeds.'
The ministers explained their king's sorrow. 'O Rishivara, you are more capable than Brahma himself in understanding our troubles. King Mahajita of Mahishmati is virtuous and dearly loved by his people. He treats his subjects like his own children, yet he remains childless. This causes him great sorrow, which we, his people, also feel. It is our duty to share in our king's happiness and sorrow. We do not know the cause of his childlessness, which is why we have come to you. Now that we have found you, we believe our suffering will end. Please tell us what can be done so our king may have a son. This would be a great kindness to us all.'
After meditating, the sage revealed that the king's suffering was due to past karma.
'O noble ones, in a past life your king was proud and committed sinful acts. He wandered from village to village. Once, on the Ekadashi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha, he had gone without food for two days. At noon, he came to a reservoir to drink water. There, a cow that had just given birth was also drinking. He drove the thirsty cow away so he could drink first. That is the reason the king now suffers. The merit from observing Ekadashi in his previous life earned him a royal birth in this one. However, the sin of turning away the thirsty cow caused his present childlessness.'
The ministers pleaded for a remedy.
'O revered sage, the scriptures say that good deeds can wash away past sins. Please show us a way to absolve the king of his past misdeeds so he may be blessed with a child.'
The sage advised: 'If all of you observe the Putrada Ekadashi fast during the Shukla Paksha of the month of Shravan, stay awake throughout the night, and dedicate the merit of this fast to your king, then he will be blessed with a son. His suffering will be removed as a result.'
Blessings after observance
The ministers followed the sage's advice. They observed the fast and stayed awake on the night of Ekadashi. On Dwadashi, they offered the merit of their fasting to the king. As a result, the queen conceived and later gave birth to a son.
This event gave the Ekadashi its name—Putrada Ekadashi—or 'giver of sons.'

‘Situation is bad, will do whatever it takes to save lives. But it's a tough task'
Uttarakhand CM Puskhar Singh Dhami's chopper could land near disaster-hit Dharali only after five attempts on Wednesday. In an interaction with Kautilya Singh, the CM spoke about the current situation in the village and plans on how to take forward the rescue and relief ops. Excerpts: What is the present situation in Dharali? The area has got disconnected from the district headquarters. Due to heavy rains and landslides, roads leading to Dharali are damaged, so is an important bridge nearby. The helipad at Harshil is also hit, making heli operations even more difficult. To top it, communication networks have been disrupted. Power supply has snapped. The situation is adverse, but our rescue teams are putting their best efforts to save lives. It is a Herculean task. How many people are feared trapped in the debris? Some individuals have given wrong information that hundreds got trapped in the debris. This is completely wrong and misleading. According to our information, a total of 190 people were rescued, and 120 are from the right side of Dharali village area and 70 from the left. According to initial information, around five or six locals and some labourers might have got trapped under the debris. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If you have a mouse, play this game for 1 minute Navy Quest Undo Two bodies were brought out. Going by fresh inputs, another dozen odd people might be trapped. Despite the hurdles, what is the progress of rescue ops? Teams from the Army, ITBP, SDRF, police and revenue department are carrying out rescue operations. Relief camps have been set up at Inter College Harsil, GMVN and Jhala. Simultaneously, efforts are underway to restore electricity and communication networks on a war footing. NIM and SDRF teams have begun constructing a temporary bridge at Limchagadh. At our request, the Centre has deployed two Chinooks and two MI-17 helicopters from Chandigarh, Sarsawa and Agra to Jolly Grant Airport early on Wednesday morning. Heavy machinery is being airlifted via Chinook helicopters to restore road connectivity. Around 125 Army personnel and 83 ITBP personnel are actively involved in rescue operations. BRO teams, including six officers and over 100 laborers, are working to clear blocked roads. Are there any tourists trapped at Dharali? So far, there is no information regarding tourists at Dharali. Besides, due to the monsoon, the number of pilgrims coming to Gangotri and other dhams has gone down considerably. I met the locals as well, but they did not give any information about tourists. There was a fair near the village on Tuesday, and it is said that around 100 to 150 people had gone there. With roads disconnected and helipad damaged, how do authorities plan to take the rescued people to hospital? This is a major challenge. We have planned a strategy to take the rescued persons from the Nelong side. A team of four doctors has already reached Harshil and efforts are on to bring them to Dharali at the earliest. Besides, a team of 13 specialists from Dehradun has been moved to Uttarkashi district hospital. A team of specialists has also been deployed at ITBP Matli and two more specialist doctors are scheduled to arrive at Uttarkashi on Thursday.
