NRL fans rally around Sam Thaiday after Broncos legend goes public with awful news
NRL fans are praising Sam Thaiday for his bravery after the Brisbane Broncos legend revealed on national TV on Tuesday night that he once contemplated suicide. The Broncos and Queensland Maroons icon is one of a number of Aussie sporing stars on this year's season of 'I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here'.
On Tuesday night's episode, the celebs were asked about why they'd decided to enter the jungle and the charities they'd chosen for the potential prize-money to go to. The 39-year-old spoke bravely about wanting to help the 'Find Your Feet' charity because of how it had helped him.
Thaiday, who played 304 games for the Broncos as well as 29 State of Origin games for Queensland and 32 Test matches for Australia, said he could have benefited from such a charity when he was younger. 'My charity is called Find Your Feet. It's run by a guy named Tommy Herschel,' he told the other celebs.
'He goes into schools and helps young boys, and he gives them a safe place to share their feelings and talk about how they're feeling. I sat in on one of his sessions and to hear how brave some of these young boys were in opening up and sharing their stories about what was going on in their lives.'
Thaiday made the heartbreaking admission that he contemplated suicide when he was a teenager. 'As a 13-year-old boy, I wanted to take my own life, and I wish I had someone like Tommy around to let me know that it was okay to talk about my feelings. As a young kid, I really struggled to find my place.
'I found myself too white to be black and too black to be white, and didn't know where I fit in. And if I had someone like Tommy Herschel in my life as a young kid, maybe I would have shared a lot of these stories a lot earlier in my life.
'He's a bit of a one-man band at the moment, and I just thought he needed help. So that's why I'm in here. And hopefully even, like, I don't even have to win it, I just want to raise some awareness for him, I want people talking about it.'

Thaiday first spoke about his troubles in 2020 and revealed how therapy helped him. 'I had bottled up my feelings for so long not knowing how to express them," he said. "I told her (the therapist) my story and I left that session somewhat motivated to tell people my story. Hopefully by getting my story out I can encourage people to speak up.
'I still have moments now where I second guess myself. Self doubt is the loudest voice in your head. That kind of was an ongoing thing throughout my whole life. I want to learn and grow and get better to make that the quietest voice in side my head. I see myself right now as being a little bit lost and lonely at times."

Broncos make brief appearance in 'Madden NFL 26' trailer
EA Sports has released the first trailer for "Madden NFL 26," and there's no love for Bo Nix or any members of the Denver Broncos' offense. The only time the Broncos are shown in the trailer comes at the 0:35 mark when Las Vegas Raiders rookie running back Ashton Jeanty is tackled by a Denver defender. It appears to be safety P.J. Locke, who wears No. 6, making the tackle. Early in the trailer, Dalton Risner is shown in the tunnel with teammates before a Minnesota Vikings game. Risner is actually still a free agent, and this isn't an announcement of a signing from EA Sports, but an oversight. The 29-year-old guard played for the Broncos from 2019-2022 and spent the last two years in Minnesota before hitting free agency this spring. Later in the trailer, former Denver quarterback Russell Wilson is shown being sacked by Dallas Cowboys pass rusher Micah Parsons. Wilson, who took 100 sacks in 30 games with the Broncos from 2022-2023, now plays for the New York Giants. Check out the full trailer below. The popular video game will be released on Aug. 14, available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC devices. Related: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans. St. Agni's Minimalist Separates Are a Vogue Editor Go-To
Photo: Courtesy of St. Agni When searching for elevated essentials with a twist, St. Agni is one of the first labels Vogue editors look to for minimalist pieces that feel both edgy and on-trend. Artful draping and nonchalant tailoring is what the Aussie-based brand founded by Lara Fell does best (Kendall Jenner is a noted fan of its ruched dresses), but our team also swears by its lineup of sleek accessories—think timeless woven bags and slick, sculptural footwear—for packed days that stretch into the night. The brand's woven tote is a daily must for senior beauty writer Kiana Murden, who has the plum color of the large size. Senior shopping writer Cortne Bonilla recently picked up two pieces from the brand for her own summer uniform: a gathered strapless dress (in her favorite color, chocolate brown), plus a pair of finely-strapped red kitten heel sandals to style it with. 'I just received this dress in the mail, and although it's not quite peak summer weather outside just yet, I've tried it in a million different ways at home—from with a light layer and mesh flat, to leather flip-flop and basket bag, everything looks A+ with it as the foundation.' Rugby league legend Mal Meninga set to be inaugural coach of NRL expansion club Perth
BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — The National Rugby League's newest team will have one of its oldest coaches when it begins play in 2027. Australia head coach and ex-Kangaroos and Queensland Origin star Mal Meninga was unveiled Friday as the Perth Bears ' inaugural head coach. The 64-year-old Meninga signed a three-year contract with the new franchise, meaning he could be 69 when his contract expires in 2030. NRL coaching great Wayne Bennett — now in charge at the South Sydney Rabitohs — is the oldest coach at the sport's elite level at 75. Craig Bellamy, who is 65, confirmed this week that he will continue coaching the Melbourne Storm into his 24th consecutive year next season. Meninga is one of the most decorated players and coaches in rugby league history, having coached Canberra (1997-2001) and Queensland (2006-2015) after playing 46 test and World Cup matches for Australia's Kangaroos, 32 State of Origin matches for Queensland and captaining the Raiders to three national titles. Before becoming Kangaroos coach in 2016, Meninga led the Queensland Maroons to their most successful period in Origin history, winning nine of his 10 series in charge. Meninga will relinquish his Australia national team coaching duties later this year in order to have 18 months to begin putting together the Bears' initial lineup of players. 'This is bigger than me,' Meninga said Friday. 'This new pioneering venture over to WA (Western Australia) and the opportunity to be involved in the growth of the game, to grow a club — the Perth Bears — is too good to refuse. I feel very honored, very nervous, and I think it's a huge responsibility.' The sport's premier competition originated in Sydney but has expanded to include a team in New Zealand, a team in the Australian capital, Canberra, a team in the Victoria state capital, Melbourne, and four teams in Queensland state. Perth Bears will enter the NRL from Australia's west coast before a team from rugby league-mad neighboring Pacific country Papua New Guinea, which is due to join in 2028 and make it a 19-team competition. The league's ambition is a 20-team format. ___ AP sports:
