78% of our borrowers are first-generation entrepreneurs accessing formal credit: UGRO Capital
, a data tech NBFC specialising in MSME lending, has highlighted a 48% credit gap in formal MSME financing in the country while emphasising the feasibility of creating a large MSME institution dedicated to MSME financing. The findings, released recently in the third edition of its Social Impact Report, also revealed that 75% of Indian MSMEs still rely on informal credit, despite the sector being the backbone of the country's economy.
UGRO Capital
, through its data-driven lending solutions, has supported over 135,000 MSMEs across diverse geographies. It has partnered up with 10 major banks and NBFCs to make lending solutions more accessible to the MSME sector.
According to the report, 78% of UGRO Capital's borrowers are
first-generation entrepreneurs
tapping formal credit for the first time. The report additionally revealed that the number of
women-led enterprises
had increased to 74% of the total portfolio. It further noted that businesses led by women have the potential to generate 150-170 million jobs and form a significant segment to tap.

The report stated that the MSME sector in India is the second-largest employer and benefits from a majority of government policies. The sector contributes approximately 30% to the nation's GDP and provides employment to over 2 million people, which makes it a crucial pillar of the Indian economy.
The research report was based on a randomised sample of 508 borrowers, selected from different states and business categories. Speaking on the report findings, Irem Sayeed, Chief Credit Officer, UGRO Capital, said that it is particularly encouraging to note the participation of women-led businesses and borrowers adopting ESG initiatives. 'These are not just milestones; they are signals of a more resilient and equitable future being built through responsible financing. The 42% rise in women's employment within our borrower network is a testament to how capital, when directed thoughtfully, can deliver tangible social dividends,' Sayeed stated.

The report also spoke of the whopping Rs 103 lakh crore shortfall in credit for the MSME sector, while highlighting that the government is looking to bolster the sector to increase financial inclusion. 'Due to the traditional player's inability to assess MSMEs creditworthiness, the credit gap of Rs 103 lakh crore exists. The MSME credit gap is a barrier to growth and inclusion in the MSME space. UGRO Capital is targeting the credit gap using an innovative mix of data and technology,' it said.
The report emphasised continued innovation in data analytics and alternative credit assessment models to improve risk profiling and unlock new lending opportunities, particularly for new-to-credit and women-led enterprises. 'Strengthening digital capabilities will not only enhance operational efficiency but also provide MSMEs with faster, more seamless access to capital,' it stated.

From The Hindu, August 5, 1975: Direct dialling facility to benefit rural areas
New Delhi, Aug. 4: The Posts and Telegraphs Department is working on a rural dialling plan to benefit subscribers in small towns and villages. The plan is based on the traffic pattern obtaining in the rural areas. It will enable the subscribers in a district to have automatic dialling of calls between the towns and with the district headquarters. Sixty per cent of the calls in the rural areas have been found to be within a revenue district. Subscribers also put through more calls to the district headquarters rather than among themselves. Most of the calls are within a range of 50 kms. The rural dialling plan will provide quick communication in an economic way. Calls from places outside the district will be initially on a manual basis, but will become automatic in course of time. Several advantages are claimed for the plan from the pattern of traffic. The cost of handling a short distance trunk call is Rs. 3 on average, while the revenue earned remains around one rupee only. Hence it is more advantageous to provide STD service in a revenue district. Already exchanges of 100 or 50 lines are automatic whereas the trunk service is manual. Under the proposed scheme, there will be more customer satisfaction as 60 per cent to 70 per cent can dial themselves. The loss to the Department will also be reduced. The Telecommunication Research Centre (TRC) is fully equipped to meet the demand. It has already evolved a new technique in telephone exchanges or switching centres which will bring down the cost of the network.

Infopark Phase III: GCDA to pool 1,000 acres, to issue notification soon
Kochi: Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) initiated procedures to publish the notification for land pooling for the much-awaited Phase III of Infopark GCDA is planning to pool nearly 1,000 acres to establish the new campus across 300 acres in Kizhakkambalam and Kunnathunadu villages of the district. The project will be the first land-pooling project in Kerala. Govt tasked GCDA with land pooling through an order last year. Following this, GCDA engaged in discussions with Infopark at various stages, conducted site inspections and began efforts to identify suitable land. However, GCDA faced technical hurdles as the identified lands were outside GCDA's jurisdiction. The authority approached govt, which subsequently issued an order last month assigning GCDA a special task for land pooling in the area. The first step for land pooling is issuing an initial notification by determining the suitable land. The area intended for pooling, along with details including survey numbers, will be published with the help of a boundary map. Subsequently, a meeting of landowners in the area will be convened to present the project details. If 75% of total landowners agree to pooling, GCDA will proceed with the project. Following this, a draft project document will be prepared for govt approval. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo After gathering public opinions and necessary changes, the final project document will be prepared before commencing work. If 75% of landowners do not consent, steps will be initiated to identify other suitable land, said GCDA authorities. A press note issued by GCDA on Monday said Phase III campus will feature six key components: carbon neutrality, self-sufficiency in water resources, a complete waste management system, road, rail and airport connectivity, an inclusive IT park and a maintenance system that doesn't disrupt the functioning of IT companies. Besides IT companies, there will be residential facilities, commercial establishments, sports and cultural facilities, recreational areas, hospitals and educational institutions, it said.

20 years on, GDA may file FIR against officials for 134 extra flats in society
Ghaziabad: GDA will take action against several current and former officials who allowed a private developer to construct and sell 134 extra flats beyond the sanctioned 400 units at Express Garden society in Indirapuram's Vaibhav Khand in 2005. A GDA panel, set up on the direction of the Allahabad High Court, is set to submit its report to the Authority's additional secretary later this week. The high court is due to hear the matter in Sept. Officials, privy to the content of the committee's findings, said the panel has recommended "FIR be filed against the architect, developer and the then GDA officials under whose watch the additional units were constructed". Last Feb, TOI reported that the internal probe by the GDA had zeroed in on some officials deputed mostly at the development authority's enforcement wing between 2008 and 2012, and notices had been served to them. Developer Pankaj Goyal, meanwhile, said he was not aware of any probe by a GDA-led panel against the project. "We did not tamper with the covered area but subdivided bigger flats to carve out 134 extra units," Goyal said. "We are for regularising the extra units as per the provisions of Building Bylaws, 2016, for which we approached the state govt and got the necessary sanction. This will be presented in the court." In 2005, the GDA approved the layout of Express Garden, allowing the construction of 400 flats on plot number 6 of Vaibhav Khand. The construction was completed between 2008-12.
