Drew Brees mentored a second-year QB this summer, but not for the Saints

USA Today23-07-2025
Drew Brees hasn't had a quiet retirement. The legendary New Orleans Saints quarterback has taken another swing at broadcasting, but he's also offering his knowledge to the next generation of passers. One young gun who sought him out was Denver Broncos starter Bo Nix. His head coach Sean Payton was pleased by Nix taking initiative to learn from the best.
"Yeah, him just reaching out (is good to see)," Payton said after Wednesday's training camp practice, acknowledging the challenges of coordinating Nix's busy schedule with Brees and quarterbacks coach Tom House. The second-year pro learned a lot in the four or five days he spent with Brees this summer. "All of that is stuff he's doing on his own. And that's what you're looking for."
Nix went 10-7 last year as a rookie, including a mid-October win over the Saints in New Orleans. He was invited to the Pro Bowl as a fourth alternate but wasn't able to make the trip due to offseason ankle surgery. Clearly he's eager to level up in 2025.
Hopefully some of the Saints' own quarterbacks make time to team up with Brees in the future; young guys like Spencer Rattler, Tyler Shough, and Jake Haener could use any edge they can glean from a week of training with a future Hall of Famer. But as was the case with Nix, they'll need to take the step to call up Brees themselves.

36 days till the Arizona Cardinals' 2025 season opener: Who has worn No. 36?

With 36 days till the Cardinals open the season against the Saints, we look at the players who have worn No. 36. We are counting down to the start of the 2025 regular season for the Arizona Cardinals, and we are less than six weeks away. They will open the season on the road against the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 7. That is 36 days away. As we count down the remaining days of the offseason, let's look at who has worn that number uniform over the years for the Cardinals. Who has worn No. 36? Cardinals players to wear No. 36 Safety Kitan Crawford, a rookie drafted in the seventh round, wears No. 36. We will see if he can make the team. The Cardinals have had a few solid players with No. 36. Budda Baker is probably the best but is known more for No. 3 now. Sikahema was very good and grew up in Mesa, Arizona. Lane was a good running back and Reaves was also good. And more recent Cardinals fans will remember how fun a player Stephens-Howling was. Indianapolis Colts LB Zaire Franklin making training camp debut

Colts' LB Zaire Franklin is set to make his training camp debut on Saturday. Indianapolis Colts' linebacker Zaire Franklin was on the field and warming up prior to Saturday's training camp practice. Franklin has yet to practice during training camp up to this point as he continued to recover from offseason ankle surgery. Earlier in the week, Shane Steichen expressed his optimism that Franklin would be able to return fairly soon. It appears that time has now come. Now, there may still be a ramp-up period for Franklin. Just because he's warming up may not mean that he goes through team drills today. We will have to wait and see what the practice plan is. Franklin is coming off a career year in which he led the NFL in tackles, while also setting career highs in sacks and interceptions. He made his first Pro Bowl and was named a second-team All-Pro as well. Being paired with Jaylon Carlies, who brings a coverage element to the position as a former safety, and operating in Lou Anarumo's defensive back-heavy scheme, should all benefit Franklin, who could, as a result, see added opportunities near the line of scrimmage this season, which is where he's at his best.

Marques Colston's game-winning touchdown catch is the Saints Play of Day 36

There are just 36 days until the New Orleans Saints kick off the 2025 regular season. Marques Coltson's 36-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown against the rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers is our Saints Play of the Day. You can watch the touchdown-scoring play for yourself here. Heading into the final week of the 2014 season, New Orleans was playing just for pride. They had a 6-9 record and were facing a 1-14 Buccaneers squad. Things got off to a pretty bad start for the Saints, as they were down 20-7 heading into the final frame. Mark Ingram was able to score a touchdown to make it a one-possession game just a minute into the fourth quarter. Later in the quarter, Keenan Lewis intercepted a Josh McCown pass to set New Orleans up at midfield with about five minutes left. On third down, Drew Brees connected with Colston over the middle of the field. The receiver ran the ball about 20 more yards into the endzone, 36 in total, setting up the eventual game-winning PAT. The Saints would go on to win 23-20 after a safety. Coincidentally, this score and eventual New Orleans victory helped the Buccaneers land the first overall selection in the 2015 NFL draft. They would go on to pick Jameis Winston, who became a fan favorite for the Saints from 2020 to 2023.
