Maserati 'cancelled' the electric MC20 - but don't write it off for good...

Auto Car29-07-2025
The electric version of the Maserati MC20 supercar could still see the light of day if the market picks up, says Maserati, after it cancelled the model earlier this year, citing insufficient demand.
Promising huge power and similar dynamics to those of the V6 car, the MC20 Folgore would have been the first electric supercar on sale – the circa-2000bhp Rimac Nevera, Pininfarina Battista and Lotus Evija meriting full-bore hypercar status.
Its potentially seminal status was ultimately its downfall, though, with nothing comparable on sale against which it could be benchmarked. Maserati wasn't confident it would attract a sufficient number of buyers away from V6 and V8-engined alternatives to recoup the substantial development costs.
Maserati CEO Santo Ficili stands by the decision and told Autocar: 'I don't think it's the right time to take this kind of supercar in the electrification direction.'
But he added that the MC20 Folgore project was on pause, rather than cancelled, and the car could yet make production as the MCPura Folgore.
'Let's say we will see,' he said when asked if the firm's supercar could yet go electric. 'The project is [advanced], but we decided to wait to understand what is going to happen.'
There are no immediate plans to begin development again. Ficili said: 'We have this fantastic [V6] engine that is to the satisfaction of our customers. We hold a different kind of power. This is our engine at this time.'
He added that he did not have the 'crystal ball' to see when there will be a market for an electric supercar, and that it was crucial 'to have the customer ready to buy a car like this' before investing further.
In the meantime, Ficili went as far as to suggest Maserati could launch a new ICE-powered, manual-shifting super-GT flagship, in partnership with Alfa Romeo. This would be likely to use the 3.0-litre twin-turbo Nettuno V6 that powers the MC20 and Granturismo.
The firm's technical boss Davide Danesin Maserati engineering boss Davide Danesin said "there are still customers looking for pure mechanical cars,' because they have a 'bad feeling' about having a battery on board a supercar, due to the heightened complexity and extra weight it brings.

Check out about what makes Maserati's latest evolution of the MC20 different than its predecessor. A proven formula for family SUV goodness The first-generation Hyundai Palisade nailed the three-row family SUV formula masterfully. It provided a powerful V6 engine, fresh styling, and a premium interior for less than its competitors. Along with its platform and powertrain sharing with the Kia Telluride, the Palisade pulled buyers away from more expensive competitors, doing so in its first year, a rare feat for a brand-new model. The Palisade didn't simply provide an excellent value; it did so in premium fashion and also earned high praise from critics, along with top-tier safety ratings from the IIHS and the NHTSA. Previous Pause Next Unmute 0:00 / 0:10 Full screen 2025 Honda Accord: 4 reasons to love it, 2 reasons to think twice Watch More The 2025 Palisade comes in seven trim levels with the base SE starting at $37,200. It's characterized by a large dark grille, slim LED daytime running lights, and vertically-oriented projector LED headlights. Every Palisade is powered by a 291-horsepower 3.8-liter V6 engine mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. EPA estimates are 19 city, 26 highway, and 22 combined for front-wheel drive versions, while all-wheel drive drops those numbers slightly to 19, 24, and 21 combined. The Palisade's main competitors in the three-row SUV space are the Kia Telluride, Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer, Subaru Ascent, and the Toyota Highlander. The second-generation Palisade was recently announced, and it will debut in showrooms before the end of this year, but the current 2025 model is still a tremendously good value, and Hyundai is offering a great lease deal in August. 2025 Hyundai Palisade lease deal for August Hyundai is offering a great lease deal for August on the 2025 Palisade SE for $369 per month for 36 months with $3,999 due at lease signing (excludes registration, tax, title, license, processing or documentation fees, insurance, and any emission charge). The offer is based on $3,999 due at lease signing (includes $369 first month's payment and $3,630 capitalized cost reduction). No security deposit is required. The generous cargo area provides 18.0 cubic feet behind the third row, 45.8 cubic feet behind row two, and 86.4 cubic feet with both rows folded flat. It's a spacious SUV for people and gear, not compromising on either. Final thoughts There's a lot to love about the 2025 Hyundai Palisade. At the end of its first generation, the family hauler has proven itself to be stylish, reliable, comfortable, and feature-rich for those who want value without sacrificing luxury. The Palisade is big enough for large families without occupying a massive footprint that can make it hard to maneuver a larger SUV in tight spots. The August lease deal makes the Palisade affordable and even more attractive, making it the right time to get in on this critically acclaimed SUV. These are all the electric cars being discounted to beat the new EV grant - and one is almost £10k cheaper...!

Car makers from Hyundai to Volvo are offering up to £3750 off new electric cars as they wait for the arrival of the UK government's new Electric Car Grant (ECG). Announced earlier this month, the ECG has been introduced as a way of stimulating EV sales in the UK, following a period of stagnation since the previous government's Plug-in Car Grant (PiCG) was pulled in 2022. The new ECG, backed by £650 million of government funding, will yield a discount for qualifying cars of either £1500 or £3750, depending on their environmental impact. To qualify, car manufacturers themselves must meet science-backed emissions targets, while the individual model lines must start at below £37,000 in entry-level trim. Which discount a model receives is determined by how much CO2 is emitted in an EV's production, assessing the energy used in vehicle assembly as well as battery manufacturing. Threshold levels have yet to be made public. While any manufacturer can apply for their car to be included in the scheme, it's thought that, due to this criteria, cars produced in Asian countries, such as China, South Korea and Japan, will not be eligible for the ECG. This would include cars from Hyundai, MG and GMW – all three of which have already launched their own equivalent discounts, likely pre-empting that their cars will be denied access to the ECG. Below are the discounts already being offered by car makers as they await the results of the ECG applications. Alfa Romeo The Alfa Romeo Junior Elettrica – the Italian marque's first EV – can now be had with £1500 off its list price. This leaves the Polish-made compact crossover retailing for £32,405. Fiat Italian car maker Fiat has brought back its £1500 Fiat E-Grant as it awaits its models eligibility decision. This discount is applied to the 500e, 600e and equivalent Abarth models. This drops pricing to: 500e £23,535; 600e from at £28,535; Abarth 500e £28,485; Abarth 600e £35,485. The upcoming Grande Panda EV, which starts from £20,975 is not included in the grant. GWM Chinese firm Great Wall Motor has launched a £3750 grant for the Ora 03 hatchback. The MG 4 EV rival, which was previously named the Funky Cat, now costs just £21,245.
