Former India batter Ambati Rayudu, calling for peace at the time Pakistan launched a fresh attack on Indian cities on Thursday, has not gone down well with Indian social media users. The former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) cricketer, Rayudu, warned against the dangerous repercussions of escalating the conflict a little later after Pakistan targeted Indian cities across the north and west borders for a second consecutive time.
While India's Air Defence System neutralised all the missiles and drones directed toward cities in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Rajasthan, Rayudu called for restraint on social media. He wrote the famous quote 'An eye for an eye makes the world blind,' which is often attributed to Mahatma Gandhi, on X.

In his next post, Rayudu also wrote that his prayers are with every Indian affected by the conflict in Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab and other parts. 'Prayers for peace and safety in Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab and other parts of India along the border. Hoping for strength, security and swift resolution for everyone affected. Jai Hind,' he shared.

Rayudu, however, faced a lot of flak on social media from Indian users who criticised his stand.
'Pathetic tweet, Ambati,' the popular cricket news handle Mufaddal Vohra wrote..
Another user instructed him that Rayudu should delete his social media post, as the first and only mistake was made by Pakistan with the Pahalgam terror attack.
'The best time to delete this tweet is now,' the user wrote. 'India didn't blink first but after what happened in Pahalgam, it can't keep its eyes shut.'
A few users also pointed out that Virat Kohli made the right decision by dropping Rayudu from India's 2019 World Cup squad. 'Kohli ne tere sath sahi kiya tha jo Vijay Shankar ko le gaya tha (Kohli did the right thing with you that he took Vijay Shankar),' he wrote.

Rayudu clarifies his 'An eye for an eye' remark
Despite the constant criticism, Rayudu clarified that he doesn't see his message as a 'call for weakness' but a reminder that we need to have compassion in our hearts.
'An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.' Let's remember — this isn't a call for weakness, but a reminder of wisdom. Justice must stand firm, but never lose sight of humanity. We can love our nation fiercely and still hold compassion in our hearts. Patriotism and peace can walk hand in hand.'

In a separate post, he also lauded the Indian armed forces for protecting our borders.
'In moments like these, we stand united not in fear, but in resolve. I feel immense gratitude to our Indian Army who are the real heroes who carry the weight of a nation with unmatched courage, discipline, and selflessness🙏🏻 Your sacrifices don't go unnoticed. Your bravery is what keeps the tricolour flying high and our borders safe. May your strength always lead us to safety, and may your service continue to pave the way for a more peaceful tomorrow. Jai Hind.'

The former batter made another post on Friday morning where he admitted that peace should not come at the cost of dignity.
'I can't even comprehend what our families at the borders are going through right now. I stand with my people and I empathise with the families at the borders. India stands united not in hate, but in unwavering belief that justice must prevail. We are a nation that cherishes peace, but not at the cost of our security or dignity. May this moment lead us not only to Justice, but also hope that this ordeal will end soon for our families at the border.'
It appeared that constant criticism may have forced Rayudu to alter his statement.

India has 8.52 million tonnes reserves of rare earth elements: Jitendra Singh

New Delhi: India has approximately 7.23 million tonnes (MT) of Rare Earth Elements Oxide (REO) contained in 13.15 MT monazite (a mineral of Thorium and Rare Earths) occurring in the coastal beach, teri and red sand and inland alluvium in parts of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Gujarat and Maharashtra, while another 1.29 MT rare earths are situated in hard rocks in parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan, the Parliament was informed on Wednesday. The Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD), a constituent unit of Department of Atomic Energy, is carrying out exploration and augmentation of minerals of rare earth group elements along the coastal, inland and riverine placer sands as well as in hard rock terrains in several potential geological domains of the country, said Minister of State Dr Jitendra Singh in a written reply in the Lok Sabha. Additionally, Geological Survey of India (GSI) has augmented 482.6 MT resources of REE ore at various cut-off grades in 34 exploration projects, the minister informed. The quantum of rare earth minerals exported during the last 10 years is 18 tonnes, while there have been no imports of rare earth minerals, he further stated. The minister also said that the Ministry of External Affairs is actively engaging with relevant stakeholders to alleviate the challenges arising from export restrictions on rare earth magnets imposed by certain countries. "There have been continued engagements at bilateral and multilateral level to increase cooperation in peaceful uses of nuclear energy, including in rare earth minerals and related technologies. These efforts aim to mitigate disruptions in the supply chain and safeguard the interests of Indian importers," said the minister. Ministry of Mines has been working to ensure supply chain resilience for critical minerals, including Rare Earth Elements, as they are key materials for sectors such as electric vehicles, renewable energy and defence. In the interest of developing bilateral cooperation with countries having rich mineral resources. The Ministry of Mines has entered into bilateral agreements with the governments of a number of countries such as Australia, Argentina, Zambia, Peru, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, Cote D'Ivoire and International organisations such as International Energy Agency (IEA), Dr Singh said. The Ministry is also engaging on various multilateral and bilateral platforms such as Minerals Security Partnership (MSP), the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF), and initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET) for strengthening the critical minerals value chain, he explained. He further stated that the Ministry of Mines has set up Khanij Bidesh India Limited (KABIL), a joint Venture company with the objective to identify and acquire overseas mineral assets that hold critical and strategic significance, specifically targeting minerals like Lithium, Cobalt, and others. KABIL has already signed an Exploration and Development Agreement with CAMYEN, a state-owned enterprise of Catamarca province of Argentina for Exploration and mining of Five Lithium Blocks in Argentina. KABIL is also having regular interactions with Critical Mineral Office in Australia with the primary objective of acquiring critical and strategic mineral assets. Further, the Ministry has initiated the process of entering into Government to Government (G2G) MoUs with Brazil and Dominican Republic for developing cooperation in the field of Rare Earth Minerals and Critical Minerals. The broad objectives of these MoUs are to provide an overarching framework for cooperation in research, development and innovation in mining, with a particular focus on rare earth elements (REE) and critical minerals, the minister pointed out. Critical minerals such as lithium, graphite, cobalt, titanium, rare earth elements etc., are demand intensive due to their strategic uses in various sectors such as electric vehicles, renewable energy and defence. The Ministry of Mines has also undertaken significant steps including various policy reforms to ensure supply chain resilience for these critical sectors, the minister added.

Congress flags 'serious questions' over impact of India-U.K. FTA on domestic industry

With an India-U.K. free trade agreement likely to be signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Britain, the Congress on Wednesday (July 23, 2025) claimed that serious questions have emerged on its impact on India's domestic industry. The Opposition party's attack came after Prime Minister Modi on Wednesday left on a four-day visit to the U.K. and the Maldives, expressing confidence that this would boost India's ties with the two countries. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said, "The Super Premium Frequent Flier jets out of India again today -- this time to the UK and the Maldives. The London trip is for the signing of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which will in fact have pernicious consequences for numerous stakeholders." The FTA's significant consequences would be on the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which are the backbone of India's economy, the largest employers of India's workers, the object of neglect and the subject of distress in the last 11 years of the Modi government's policy of favouring a couple of big business groups, Mr. Ramesh claimed in a post on X. He said automobile manufacturers will similarly be impacted, as will the pharmaceutical industry. Citing the key issues that have been raised by the noted Delhi-based think tank Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), Ramesh said the FTA would allow British firms to participate in the procurement of goods and services of non-sensitive central government entities. This opens up a huge market of an estimated $600 billion to U.K. firms, he said. "This FTA is a marked shift in government policy -- previously, India had kept government procurement out of trade deals. This is one of the last few remaining arenas of industrial policy available to India to spur local enterprises. That avenue is now endangered," Mr. Ramesh said. "The Modi Government has agreed to cut car import duties from 100% to just 10%, marking our first ever auto tariff concession. This will undermine the already feeble Make in India narrative even further and lays the ground for similar concessions with trade partners like the US and the EU," he claimed. This blow to the domestic industry comes at a time of a generational opportunity in automobile manufacturing due to the electrical vehicle transition, he said. "For the first time, India has agreed to patent rules that go beyond the WTO's Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights. This is a historic shift in the Indian Government's policy and signifies a submission to the big pharmaceutical lobby," Mr. Ramesh said. This will impact access to affordable medicines within India and endanger our position as a global leader in manufacturing generic drugs, he said. "India has failed to secure an exemption from the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which will allow the UK to impose carbon taxes on Indian products even as we grant them duty-free access. The same precedent will now roll over to the EU, with whom India is currently negotiating," he contended. "Whatever the spin that will be given to the FTA by the peripatetic PM and his drumbeaters, serious questions have now emerged on the impact that this agreement will have on our domestic industry," Mr. Ramesh said. In his departure statement, Modi said India and the United Kingdom share a comprehensive strategic partnership that has witnessed significant progress in recent years. He noted that the collaboration between the two countries spans a wide range of sectors, including trade, investment, technology, innovation, defence, education, research, sustainability, health and people-to-people ties. "During my meeting with Prime Minister Rt Hon Sir Keir Starmer, we will have the opportunity to further enhance our economic partnership, aimed at fostering prosperity, growth and job creation in both countries," Mr. Modi said. The Prime Minister will also meet King Charles III during the visit. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and his British counterpart Jonathan Reynolds are likely to sign the FTA in the presence of the two prime ministers. In May, India and the U.K. sealed the FTA that is expected to benefit 99% of Indian exports from tariffs and will make it easier for British firms to export whisky, cars and other products to India besides boosting the overall trade basket. The trade deal, firmed up after three years of negotiations, is expected to ensure comprehensive market access for Indian goods across all sectors and India will gain from tariff elimination on about 99% of tariff lines (product categories) covering almost 100% of the trade values, according to officials. Mr. Modi will then travel to the Maldives at the invitation of President Mohamed Muizzu.
