Michelle Obama compares ESPN theatrics to watching ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta'

New York Post3 days ago
It is no secret that ESPN programming looks a lot different now than it did even 10 or so years ago.
A network that constantly flooded viewers with some of the best highlights from the day before has turned into lots of talking-head shows like 'First Take,' 'Get Up,' 'NFL Live' and 'The Pat McAfee Show.'

Such changes have even grabbed former first lady Michelle Obama's attention, who said she cannot help but feel like she is watching reality television when she turns on the channel.
'It's all a sociological study. They think that sports is better reality TV, I'm like, 'it's the same thing.' If I listen to ESPN for an hour, it's like watching the 'Real Housewives of Atlanta,' you know?' Obama said on her brother Craig's 'IMO' podcast.
'It's the same drama, and they're yelling at each other, and they don't get along, you know? I mean, Stephen A. Smith, he's just like every other…'

Two of the hosts then joked that he'd be a perfect fit for the show.
'So that's why I'm like, 'what's the difference?' It's just, you know, it's just sociological drama,' added Obama. 'I mean, the fact that people over seasons of working still can't get along.
'They still have the same arguments, you know, and it's not just women. But this happens in sports, too. I find it fascinating.'

ESPN did recently cancel 'Around the Horn' after over 20 years, with one of its former analysts, Jay Marriotti, claiming it had gone too woke.
In one of its final episodes, a former panelist making a return, Kate Fagan, said 'trans kids deserve to play sports.'
In the show's final episode, longtime 'Around the Horn' guest Tim Cowlishaw took a shot at the network for 'hiring athletes instead of journalists.'

Two Buckeyes make The Athletic's \

Bruce Feldman, formerly of ESPN and currently writing for The Athletic, writes a fun piece each year called the "Freaks List." Basically, he finds the players for each college football season that he considers the most absurdly physically gifted. In short, the "freaks." It's always a fun read, and a great way to learn the names of players to keep an eye on during the upcoming season. And this year, Feldman's list of freaks has two Buckeyes at the top. The top spot on the list is occupied by Jeremiah Smith. We all know that Smith is going to be probably the best receiver in the country this year. But what makes him a "freak," exactly? This quote from Feldman sums it up: "Smith's 11-foot broad jump, 38-inch vertical jump and 23.5 mph on the GPS are jaw-dropping for a receiver his size." Add his 550-pound squat and his 20 reps of 225-pound bench press, and it's clear why Smith is atop the list. He's putting up numbers that you see from linebackers, and he's doing it with nearly world-class track speed. On top of Smith at No. 1, there's another Buckeye in the top ten. Linebacker Sonny Styles slots in at tenth on the Freak List. What stands out about Styles to Feldman? "At 6-4 1/2, 243 pounds, he broad jumped 11-0, vertical jumped 40 inches and squatted 675 pounds." He also mentions Styles' speed, quoting Styles that he topped out at 23.2 mph last year. Of course, what will always impress me most about Styles is his block on Jack Sawyer's legendary fumble return. Styles was behind Texas running back Quintrevion Wisner when Sawyer picked up the ball, and Styles flat-out outrun him to get in front them block Wisner all the way down the field. That's Freak-level speed. No other Buckeyes made his top 100, but this isn't a list of best players or or most valuable. It's a list of physical freaks. It's a very fun read in general, and it definitely has plenty to keep Buckeye fans excited for the upcoming season.

Zora Stephenson, Jordan Cornette, and Ashley ShahAhmadi to Serve as Reporters; Grant Liffmann Joins as NBA Insider Focused on Front Office 2025-26 NBA Season Begins Oct. 21 on NBC and Peacock STAMFORD, Conn. – Aug. 4, 2025 – NBC Sports announced today that Jordan Cornette, Ashley ShahAhmadi, and Zora Stephenson are joining its NBA coverage as courtside reporters and Grant Liffmann as an NBA Insider focusing on front office news. Stephenson, who joined NBC Sports in 2021, currently serves as a sideline reporter for Notre Dame and Big Ten Football and a play-by-play voice for Peacock's exclusive slate of Big Ten Women's Basketball. She worked as a basketball and gymnastics reporter for the 2024 Paris Olympics and as a social media host during the 2022 Beijing Winter Games. From 2019-2023, she served as a sideline and digital reporter for the Milwaukee Bucks on Bally Sports/Fox Wisconsin, and in April 2021 became the first woman to handle play-by-play for a Bucks game. Additionally, Stephenson was a four-year member of the basketball team at Elon University and a team captain. Cornette currently serves as a college basketball analyst for NBC Sports, regularly appearing on Big Ten College Countdown. A four-year member of the Notre Dame basketball team from 2001-2005 and the program's all-time leader in blocks (201), Cornette was a two-time team captain and helped lead the Fighting Irish to three NCAA Tournament appearances. Before NBC Sports, Cornette spent time at ESPN, appearing on programs such as Get Up, First Take, NFL Live, The Huddle, and more. In addition to his college basketball duties at NBC Sports, Cornette has also appeared as a studio host and field reporter on GOLF Channel. ShahAhmadi previously served as the Charlotte Hornets' sideline reporter for Bally Sports South for multiple seasons. Her prior basketball experience also includes being an ESPN Radio NBA postseason reporter and, while previously at TNT Sports, an NBA host and reporter. Aside from basketball, ShahAhmadi has served as one of ESPN's college football sideline reporters since August 2023, primarily working with SEC Network. Grant Liffmann served as an executive in the Atlanta Hawks' front office for three seasons. Liffmann held the role of VP of Basketball Operations, as well as most recently the VP of Pro Personnel, overseeing the pro scouting department. Prior to his time in the Hawks' front office, he spent nearly six years at NBC Sports Bay Area primarily covering the Golden State Warriors, where he hosted the Warriors Outsiders show. Liffmann will serve as NBC Sports' NBA Insider focusing on front office news and will also occasionally serve as a game reporter. 'Our reporting roster is loaded with former captains and leaders who are lifelong hoopers and who understand the game from the inside out,' said NBC Sports Executive Producer Sam Flood. 'Zora, Jordan, and Ashley are uniquely positioned to tell the inside story unfolding on the court. With Grant, we've got a voice fresh out of the front office. He can break down not just what's happening, but why it's happening when the news drops.' The NBA returns to NBC and debuts on Peacock on Tuesday, Oct. 21, when the 2025-26 season tips off. Throughout the course of the season, NBC Sports will present up to 100 regular season NBA games -- including five games a week for portions of the season -- plus the playoffs and All-Star Weekend. NBC and Peacock will present coverage on Tuesday nights beginning in October. After Sunday Night Football coverage concludes in 2026, NBC Sports will launch Sunday Night Basketball across NBC and Peacock. Peacock will livestream national Monday night games starting Oct. 27.
