NDTV reported that the fraud began in April 2023 when the victim connected with a woman named Sharvi on Facebook.
The woman claimed that she had separated from her husband and sought money for her children's medical expenses.
Over time, other women, named Kavita, Dinaz, and Jasmine, contacted the man via WhatsApp, each asking for financial assistance under different pretexts.
The fraud intensified when Dinaz told the victim that Sharvi had died and demanded money to cover her hospital expenses. She allegedly threatened to take her own life if he refused.
By January 2025, the man had exhausted his savings, paying her a total of ₹8.7 crore. He then borrowed money from his son and daughter-in-law, continuing the payments until his son grew suspicious and stepped in.
The revelation that he had fallen prey to a cyber scam left the man severely shocked; he was hospitalised and later diagnosed with dementia. A cybercrime case was filed on July 22, and investigations are underway, NDTV reported.
Fake call centre busted in Delhi
In an unrelated incident, the Lucknow police has arrested two men from Delhi for allegedly operating a bogus call centre that defrauded people by posing as bank representatives and luring them into credit card renewal scams.
The gang is suspected to have committed cyber frauds amounting to over ₹50 lakh in the past year, they said.
Addressing a press conference, deputy commissioner of police (South) Nipun Aggarwal said a local resident, Jitendra Kumar, had filed a complaint in June at the Sarojini Nagar police station. He reported receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be a bank official who told him that his credit card was about to expire and needed renewal.
The fraudsters then accessed his card and siphoned off ₹1.6 lakh, he said.
"Acting swiftly, our cybercrime team and Sarojini Nagar police traced the suspects to the Jaitpur area in South Delhi and arrested two individuals – Vikas Kumar (28) and Rahul Lakhera (31)," Aggarwal said, speaking alongside additional DCP Rallapalli Vasanth Kumar.
The police said they recovered 25 mobile phones, nearly two dozen SIM cards, a laptop, and other digital tools from the accused. Investigations revealed that the duo operated out of Vikas Kumar's house, which also served as the fake call centre.
Several women were employed there, making fraudulent calls to unsuspecting victims. They were paid monthly salaries ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹15,000.
DCP Agarwal said the gang used personal data provided by an accomplice referred to only as "Dubey ji" from Bihar, who supplied credit card information of potential victims at the rate of ₹10 per customer.

Complaint alleges BJP MP Suresh Gopi is 'missing', student leader seeks probe

A Kerala Students' Union (KSU) leader on Sunday accused senior Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Union minister Suresh Gopi of being 'inaccessible' to the people of his constituency and district for an extended period, and filed a 'missing' complaint with the police. Kerala Students' Union leader Gokul Guruvayoor files 'missing' complaint against BJP minister Suresh Gopi, alleging he is "inaccessible" to his constituency.(X-@TheSureshGopi) KSU is the student wing of the Congress party. The leader, Gokul Guruvayoor, raised concerns over Gopi's alleged absence from Thrissur, where he serves as the Lok Sabha MP, PTI reported. He alleged that Gopi has not visited the constituency in the last three months and has remained silent on the recent arrest of two Catholic nuns from Kerala in Chhattisgarh. 'Even if Gopi was a leader who had completely concentrated on the Christian vote bank during the last Lok Sabha polls and gifted a golden crown to a church to woo the community votes, he kept mum when the nuns suffered humiliation and arrest in the BJP-ruled state,' Guruvayoor told PTI. The two nuns and a co-accused were arrested for alleged human trafficking and forced conversion and were released from Durg Central Jail in Chhattisgarh on August 1 after a court granted them bail, saying the case was based on 'mere suspicion.' The Catholic nuns, Preethy Mary and Vandana Francis, were welcomed outside the jail by several leaders from Kerala, including LDF MPs. The KSU leader further charged that Gopi was unreachable even when authorities sought his presence for inaugurating a major central government project implemented under the Thrissur Corporation. 'The union minister was inaccessible not just to ordinary people of the constituency, even those in responsible positions in the state could not reach him,' the KSU leader alleged. Gokul said he sent the missing complaint to the East Police via email on Sunday morning and plans to submit a hard copy at the police station on Monday. He added that the KSU would launch a poster campaign across the district starting Monday, demanding action to locate the 'missing union minister.' With PTI inputs

How a new SIM card connects Chhattisgarh youth to Kohli, de Villiers, Rajat Patidar

Raipur: What if a new SIM card suddenly connected you to Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and an IPL captain? That's exactly what happened to a young man from a remote Chhattisgarh village, who thought he'd just bought a routine SIM card—only to discover it once belonged to cricketer Rajat Patidar. What followed was a whirlwind of celebrity calls, confusion, and an unexpected brush with fame. At first, they dismissed it as a glitch—until calls started coming in from Kohli, de Villiers, and Yash Dayal. Manish Bisi, in his twenties, from Madagaon village in Gariaband district, purchased a SIM card on June 28 from a shop in Deobhog, around 8 kilometres from his village. His friend Khemraj, while helping him set up WhatsApp, noticed the display picture was of India cricketer Patidar, who had captained Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the 2025 IPL season. At first, they dismissed it as a glitch—until calls started coming in from Kohli, de Villiers, and Yash Dayal. Thinking it to be a prank by friends, they even played along—until Patidar called him on July 15, requesting to return his SIM. In no time, a police team arrived at his doorstep. Gariaband deputy superintendent of police Neha Sinha explained that the SIM had been deactivated after 90 days of inactivity and reassigned to a new customer, in line with telecom policy. 'Manish was actually getting calls from cricketers who were in contact with Rajat Patidar. Patidar informed the Madhya Pradesh Cyber Cell that his number had been allotted to someone else and requested to have it back,' she said. The Madhya Pradesh cyber cell contacted Gariaband police, who spoke with Manish and his family. With their consent, the SIM was recently returned to Patidar. 'There was no legal issue or fault on anyone's part—it was simply a result of standard telecom procedures,' Sinha added. For Manish, Khemraj, and their families, the incident has been nothing short of 'a dream.' Khemraj, an ardent Kohli fan, recalled Manish passing the phone to him. 'The callers, who identified themselves as Virat Kohli and Yash Dayal, asked why we were using Patidar's number. We explained that we had bought a new SIM and this was our number.' 'Talking to legends like Kohli and de Villiers is something we can't describe. Even if it happened because of a mix-up, we were lucky. People just dream of seeing them, but we got to speak to them,' said Manish's brother, Deshbandhu Bisi.
