US envoy Witkoff visits Tel Aviv protest calling for release of captives from Gaza
US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff visited a protest Saturday in central Tel Aviv, where families of 'Israeli' captives held in the Gaza Strip are demonstrating to pressure the 'Israeli' government for a deal to secure their relatives' release. Witkoff spoke with several families in the 'Hostage Square', expressing his country's solidarity with their demands and reaffirming that the United States continues to support mediation efforts to reach an agreement that would lead to the captives' freedom. Witkoff was greeted with applause before going into a meeting with representatives of the families, Hebrew media reported. The visit comes amid mounting internal pressure on the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with families demanding intensified political action and a prisoner exchange deal to end the suffering of their loved ones.

Egypt rejects Trump's call for free passage through Suez Canal
The head of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), Osama Rabie, has stated that Egypt will not grant any preferential treatment to US ships or others, emphasizing that Cairo is committed to the 1888 Convention of Constantinople, which prohibits discrimination in fees or services. Rabie's remarks came in response to a call from US President Donald Trump, who recently demanded that American military and commercial vessels be allowed to pass through the Suez Canal for free. Rabie said that Egypt respects international agreements and charters, confirming that its position aims to ensure fairness and non-discrimination among nations. "This is not a position against the United States, but rather to preserve the principle of equal treatment," he said. The authority's chairman noted that the canal is facing a major crisis due to Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, which have caused a more than 50% drop in the number of transiting vessels. Currently, 30 to 35 ships pass through daily, compared to more than 65 before the crisis. This has had a severe impact on revenues, which fell by 61% in 2024 to $3.9 billion, down from $10.2 billion in 2023. The number of transiting ships also decreased from 26,434 to 13,213 during the same period. Egypt has refused to join any military alliances against the Houthis. "It is not Egypt's policy to enter into alliances against any Arab country, as the Houthis are part of Yemen," Rabie said. In an effort to mitigate the crisis, the Suez Canal Authority has announced discounts of up to 15% for giant ships in a bid to attract maritime traffic. Rabie also called on international insurance companies to reduce insurance fees for ships passing through the Red Sea, noting that the stability of navigation would return with a cessation of the war in Gaza, which would end the justification for targeting ships.

Marjorie Taylor Greene becomes first Republican lawmaker to decry Gaza genocide
A recent X post by US House lawmaker Marjorie Taylor Greene has sparked a public dispute with fellow Republican Representative Randy Fine (R-FL), condemning his controversial remarks on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and accusing him of fueling antisemitism. Greene's post directly challenged Fine's earlier statement, where he responded to reports of malnutrition deaths in Gaza by writing, "Release the hostages. Until then, starve away. (This is all a lie anyway. It amazes me that the media continues to regurgitate Muslim terror propaganda.)". Fine, a freshman lawmaker, has a history of extreme anti-Palestinian rhetoric, including using hashtags like "#StarveAway" and stating there are "no such thing as innocent Palestinian civilians". In her rebuke, Greene called Fine's statement "disgraceful" and asserted it "will actually cause more antisemitism". Notably, Greene, a prominent figure in the MAGA movement, also used the term "genocide" to describe the situation in Gaza, a significant departure from the typical Republican stance of unconditional support for 'Israel'; making her the first Republican lawmaker to use the term. This comes despite Greene's own past controversies involving antisemitic tropes and Holocaust comparisons . The public spat highlights emerging divisions within the Republican Party on the Gaza aggression. Even former President Donald Trump has "recalibrated" his stance, acknowledging "real starvation" in Gaza and stating, "We have to get the kids fed". While some Jewish advocacy groups, like the American Jewish Committee, condemned Fine's remarks, others, such as AIPAC, denied pulling his endorsement . Greene's post also resurrected a past personal disagreement, recalling Fine's alleged desire to live in Washington D.C. rather than his Florida district, adding a layer of personal animosity to the political clash. Fine, who assumed office in April 2025, represents Florida's 6th congressional district and has opened multiple district offices . In another recent post, MTG questioned whether 'innocent Israeli lives more valuable than innocent Palestinian and Christian lives?' 'And why should America continue funding this?' 'The secular government of nuclear armed Israel has proven that they are beyond capable of dealing with their enemies and are capable of and are in the process of systematically cleansing them from the land,' she continued. She added that she will continue to 'push for world peace because that is the type of world I want for my children and all the world's children.' As of July 2025, UNICEF indicated that over 320,000 children under five in Gaza are at risk of acute malnutrition, with thousands suffering from severe acute malnutrition. The WHO documented 74 malnutrition-related deaths in 2025 alone by July, with 63 occurring in July, and Gaza's Health Ministry reported 82 deaths in July, including 24 children.
