Ronald Acuña Jr. homers in return from injury, does Ja Morant grenade celebration
Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. couldn't have scripted his return any better.
Acuña, who earned the 2023 NL MVP award after becoming the first player to record at least 40 home runs and 70 stolen bases in a season, suffered a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury on May 26, 2024. Acuña went down after he appeared to twist awkwardly while on the base path, marking his second major knee injury in four seasons.
Friday's matchup between the Braves and the San Diego Padres marked Acuña's first game back on the field in nearly a year. Acuña led off for the Braves in the bottom of the first inning and went yard on the first pitch from Padres pitcher Nick Pivetta.
Acuña dropped his bat and took a page out of Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant's book. Acuña did Morant's grenade celebration, throwing an imaginary grenade and covering his ears as the crowd erupted in applause.

Acuña's 467-foot homer marked the Braves' only run of the entire game. They ultimately lost 2-1 to the Padres and dropped to 24-26 on the season.
Acuña made headlines earlier this month after making a controversial social media post, where he accused Atlanta Braves manager Brian Snitker of having a double standard. Acuña was critical of Snitker in a viral post on April 19 when he didn't remove Braves outfielder Jarred Kelenic from the game for not hustling after he didn't run out a ball and was tagged out at second. "If it were me, they would take me out of the game," Acuña wrote.

He deleted the post and issued an apology to Snitker and his team, admitting that he was frustrated with being away from the team while working his way back from injury.
'I was just frustrated with my situation in the sense of my being able to return to the team,' said Acuña. 'I'm coming off a second major injury. I'm in Florida away from my teammates, the team is struggling. Those were sort of the things that were frustrating me. … I wanna be here (in Atlanta) my whole career. So just seeing the team and my teammates going through that and not being able to help and not being able to be with them was where the frustration was coming from.'

The NHL scrapped its traditional All-Star format in February for a international tournament that was a big success among fans and players. It was held up in contrast to the debut NBA's four-team mini-tournament that drew widespread scorn alongside the coverage of the event.

The Rockies established themselves as possibly the worst team in baseball history on Sunday, during yet another loss. Colorado has now played more games in a season than any team in Major League Baseball history without getting a 10th win, per USA Today. Advertisement The club set this record of futility on Sunday by losing to the New York Mets, 5-3. The Rockies led after three innings, but couldn't hold on to win. Colorado has now played 59 games this year, with wins in just nine of them. Only four other teams have played at least 55 games before getting a 10th win, per the outlet. They are: the 1895 Louisville Colonels, the 1904 Washington Senators, the 1886 Washington Nationals, and the 1899 Cleveland Spiders. All four of those teams picked up a 10th win by their 59th game. But not the Rockies, who are now 9-50 on the season. The Rockies could set the MLB season record for losses this year The futility of the Rockies this season is quite remarkable. Colorado is on track to lose more than 130 games, which would be a MLB record. Just last season, the Chicago White Sox lost 121. Advertisement The Rockies fired manager Bud Black in the midst of this nightmarish season. Colorado's interim manager is former third-base coach Warren Schaeffer, who also may not last the entire season. It doesn't help the club that they play in the National League West, with some of the best teams in baseball this season. Colorado currently trails the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in that division by 27.5 games. The lowly Rockies have won just three games so far this season away from Coors Field. Colorado's struggles are due in part to their offense. The team is dead last in MLB this year in batting average, runs batted in, and hits, per MLB stats. Colorado gets their next chance to finally pick up a 10th win on Monday. The Rockies play the Miami Marlins.

The San Diego Padres have done well to stay neck-and-neck with the Los Angeles Dodgers atop the National League West to start the 2025 campaign, but if they intend on making a championship run this season, they are going to need some reinforcements. According to a recent report, the team is showing interest in trading for Boston Red Sox star left fielder Jarren Duran to fill arguably the biggest hole on their roster. Advertisement The Padres have been struggling to get any sort of production from the left field spot this season, as they have primarily used a combination of Jason Heyward and Gavin Sheets at this position to this point. While Sheets has been a revelation at the plate, he suffered a slew of injuries after crashing into the left field wall during the team's win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday, and while he may not end up missing much time, the team has set their sights on Duran once again. There's still time for them to turn things around, but if they continue struggling, they could consider trading Duran since the top prospect in baseball, Roman Anthony, appears to be more than ready to be promoted to the majors. Duran enjoyed a breakout season in 2024, but he has taken a step back so far in 2025, as he's posted a .264 batting average with four home runs and 34 runs batted in. Still, he's one of the Red Sox best players, and he'd be an immediate upgrade for the Padres in left field. Even if Boston struggles, though, they may be more interested in trading either Ceddanne Rafaela or Wilyer Abreu in order to make room for Anthony, so it remains to be seen whether San Diego will be successful in their efforts to land the former All-Star.
