Japan PM Shigeru Ishiba signals he'll stay amid resignation calls

He is set to speak at a meeting of
Liberal Democratic Party
lawmakers on Monday. Party members have been calling on someone to take responsibility for the July 20 elections that saw the LDP lose its majority in Japan's upper house elections. It marks the first time since 1955 that a leader from the storied Japanese party will govern the country without a majority in at least one of the legislative bodies.

Photos recovered from an encounter site in 2024 helped identify Pahalgam terrorists
The three Pahalgam terrorists who were killed during Operation Mahadev on July 28 were identified and tracked with the help of photographs recovered from a mobile phone seized by the security forces after an encounter in south Kashmir in 2024, a senior government official said. The phone contained several pictures of the three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists identified as Suleman, alias Faizal Jatt, Hamza Afghani, and Zibran posing with guns and ammunition. Hid in Dachigam forest The photographs were then matched with the accounts of eyewitnesses present at the Baisaran meadow on April 22 and a search was launched for them in the Dachigam forest, around 20 km from Srinagar, where they were hiding after the terror attack. The terrorists were using a LoRa (long range) wireless module to communicate, and its signals helped the intelligence agencies track their device was likely assembled, and has been sent for forensic examination, the official said. Home Minister Amit Shah informed the Lok Sabha on July 29 that indigenous technology was used to track the three terrorists in the Dachigam forest. The Minister said that on May 22, the Intelligence Bureau (IB) received information about the presence of terrorists in the Dachigam area through human intelligence. He said 'continuous efforts were made by the IB and the Army from May 22 to July 22 to confirm the information with an equipment made by our agencies to capture ultra signals in Dachigam'. 'While all three are Pakistanis, Hamza Afghani belongs to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region in north-west Pakistan,' the official said. The official said the terrorists were sighted multiple times in the forest but they always managed to get away. Security forces combed the forests and monitored areas close to streams and rivers as the terrorists came there to fetch water. As reported by The Hindu, a group of 20-25 hardened terrorists from Pakistan infiltrated around three years ago and are said to be operating in the forest and mountains across Pir Panjal in Jammu and the forests in south Kashmir. In 2024, the foreign terrorists split into two groups, one led by Suleman who was killed during Operation Mahadev on July 28 and the other group led by another Pakistani identified as Musa. Since 2021, around 150 security personnel have been killed in Jammu and Kashmir, likely carried out by the same group. 'After Operation Mahadev, we have received crucial information about the other foreign terrorists and we have launched operations to track them down,' said the official.

The videos, released by militant groups Hamas and the Palestinians, depicted Israeli hostages Evyatar David and Rom Braslavski in a visibly fragile state, sparking widespread outrage and concern. The undated footage of David is juxtaposed with images of starving Palestinian children. They are among fifty hostages that remain in the territory, at least 20 of whom are believed to be alive, as per CNN. The videos were released as ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas have stalled, and Palestinians in Gaza face a mounting starvation crisis. According to CNN, the United States' special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, attended the protest in Tel Aviv, one day after visiting a controversial US-backed aid distribution site in the Gaza Strip. Witkoff later held a nearly three-hour meeting with around 40 representatives of the hostage families, which was described as "very emotional". During the meeting, Witkoff emphasised that ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas should be "all or nothing," with all 50 hostages in Gaza being returned to Israel in one go. "The plan is not to expand the war, but to end it. We think the negotiations should be changed to all or nothing. End the war and bring all 50 hostages home at the same time - that's the only way," Witkoff reportedly said. "Someone will be to blame" if the remaining living hostages do not return to Israel still alive, Witkoff said, according to the forum. According to the forum, Witkoff said that the US will "get your children home and hold Hamas responsible for any bad acts on their part" and "do what's right for the Gazan people." ‘If kanwariyas can be showered with flowers, so should Urs devotees'
Bareilly: With the 107th Urs of Sufi saint Ahmad Raza Khan Fazile Barelvi set to be held from Aug 18 to 20 in Bareilly, religious leaders associated with the prominent Ala Hazrat dargah have urged the Yogi Adityanath govt to arrange a flower petal shower from a helicopter, similar to the one seen during the kanwar yatra. On Saturday, representatives of the dargah met UP minister Danish Azad Ansari at the Circuit House in Bareilly and submitted a memorandum. The minister assured them he would take up the demand with the state govt. "This request has been conveyed to both the district administration and the chief minister," said a scholar associated with the dargah. Farmaan Hasan Khan, national general secretary of Jamaat Raza-e-Mustafa—an organisation linked to the dargah—told TOI: "The govt showers flower petals on kanwar yatra pilgrims. Lakhs of devotees from around the world come to attend the Urs. We are only asking for equal treatment." He cited two previous occasions when such a gesture was made. "In 1999, late PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee arranged a flower shower during Urs-e-Razvi. Former Union minister Santosh Gangwar delivered his congratulatory message and offered a chadar at the dargah on his behalf. That year, seven quintals of flowers were showered along the Islamia Ground to Mohalla Saudagaran route," Farmaan said. The second instance, he added, was in 2015, after cleric Maulana Tauqeer Raza secured special permission for the flower shower. This year, the dargah anticipates a footfall of over 25 lakh devotees from across India and abroad.
