Pune student held for obscene texts, calls to minister
MUMBAI: A 24-year-old student from Pune has been arrested for sending inappropriate text messages and making repeated phone calls to a woman BJP minister. The Maharashtra Cyber Police arrested Amol Kale and charged him under Section 78 (stalking) and Section 79 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS) and the Information Technology Act, 2000.
Kale was arrested on a complaint filed by BJP officer bearer, Nikhil Bhamre, who had approached the Maharashtra cyber police two days ago. Police traced the caller to Bhosari in Pune. The local police finally picked up Kale, who hails from Beed district. He was taken into custody on Thursday, brought to Mumbai, and been remanded to police custody till Friday.
Police said Kale had allegedly been stalking the minister for the last few days, by making repeated phone calls and sending her offensive messages, said a police officer.
Kale has confessed to making the calls and police have also found the messages he allegedly sent the minister in his mobile phone. Police are yet to figure out why Kale was harassing and stalking the minister, said the officer.

Vasai revenue officials file FIR against 28 ready mix cement plants
VASAI : The Vasai revenue officials have filed an FIR against 28 ready mix cement (RMC) plant owners for polluting the environment, deteriorating the water quality and operating without any permissions at the Naigaon police station last week. It was the revenue officials who filed a complaint while the implementing and supervising body, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) was found napping. The activists were upset that it was the revenue official who took the pain while it was the basic job of the MPCB. Apart from polluting the environment the RMC trucks are often seen driving on the wrong side, day and night, on the Mumbai Ahmedabad national highway (NH48) without any fear from the Mira Bhayandar Vasai Virar (MBVV) cops or the Highway police. The FIR filed on May 7 has been filed under the BNS sections 223 (disobedience to orders issued by public servants), 270 (public nuisance) and 279 (offences concerning the quality of public water sources). The FIR also mentions that these 28 RMC plants and Dambur Plants (Asphalt plants or Asphalt mixing plants) are the source of pollution for Air and Water. The FIR clearly mentions that the effluent generated by these RMC plants have been openly discharged in the water bodies further deteriorating the potable quality of streams and ponds, used on a daily basis by the locals and the villagers. Sushil Morale, Talathi (revenue official) said that on April 22 2025, we conducted survey of RMC and Dambur plants in two villages - Sasunavghar & Maljipada, in Vasai Taluka, after orders from our Tehsildar Avinash Koshti, as he had received several complaints about illegally operated RMC plants and pollution arising from them. He also said that these 28 units didnt produce any documents showcasing permissions from various government agencies who issue permissions to operate these units. We also gave them two weeks, but since they didnt turn-up with legal documents, we proceeded with the FIR. Now they will have to produce those documents to the cops post which their legality would be exposed. Deepak Rao, an activist in Vasai, who has filed PIL's regarding safeguarding the reclaimed waterbodies and escalating issues like illegal construction on forest land, said that, this was the job of the MPCB and not the revenue officials. What checks does the MPCB have in place while other government agency filed FIR against RMC's for polluting the environment, he questioned. We have acted on 20 RMC plants in MBMC and VVCMC jurisdiction in the last eight months and this is an ongoing activity, said Kiran Hasabnis, Regional Officer, MPCB, Thane. Filing FIR against 28 polluting units in one single day and taking action against 20 RMC units in eight months only speaks about the lackadaisical approach of the MPCB, added Deepak. In the first week of May, two natives from Uttar Pradesh had died after falling into a well, 30-feet deep, at a RMC unit located at Naigaon. The Naigaon cops had registered an accidental death report (ADR) in that case and have said that the investigation is still on.

West Bengal govt to allow residential consumers to opt out from power smart meters: Official
KOLKATA : Amid protests over alleged inflated electricity bills following the installation of prepaid smart meters, the West Bengal government has decided to allow residential power consumers to opt out from the system and revert to traditional devices, an official said on Tuesday. The government had on Monday temporarily suspended fresh installations of smart meters for domestic consumers, he said. "The installation of smart meters for residential consumers has been temporarily suspended, but there is no plan for a mass recall. Consumers can choose to switch back to conventional meters," the official said. The prepaid smart meter installation will continue for commercial and government establishments, the official said. The decision comes after the BJP and the Left Front have been accusing the Trinamool Congress government of "burdening households with sudden tariff hikes and opaque smart meter installation". There had been protests in districts such as Howrah, North 24 Parganas, and Bardhaman, where people alleged their bills doubled or tripled after smart meter installations. The Mamata Banerjee government had earlier approved large-scale smart meter deployment to help the cash-strapped utility, West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd, recover dues. The state government departments alone owed over Rs 1,500 crore to the discom, which has a total debt of Rs 15,400 crore in the 2023-24 fiscal, the official said. In May, Polaris Smart Metering secured a Rs 2,246-crore contract to install 2.2 million smart meters in West Bengal under the Centre's Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).

49-Year-Old Man Dies After Cement Mixer Detaches from Tractor, Hits Moped
Nagpur: A 49-year-old man lost his life in a freak road accident on Tuesday morning after a cement mixer reportedly detached from a speeding tractor and collided with his two-wheeler at Vaishno Devi Chowk, near Deshpande Layout. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The deceased, Attasingh Ramdas Verma, a resident of Bhagat Nagar, was exiting from the chowk on his moped around 11.30am when the incident occurred. According to the police, a tractor being driven recklessly by Santosh Mangal Shahu (29), a resident of Garib Nawaz Nagar, was moving in the same area when the iron bar of the attached cement mixer reportedly broke loose. As per the initial police complaint, the detached cement mixer barrel violently struck Verma's moped, causing him to fall and suffer serious injuries. He was immediately rushed to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for emergency treatment, but the doctors declared him brought dead. The complaint was lodged by Verma's son-in-law, Swapnil Khobragade (35). Based on his statement, Nandanvan police registered a case against the tractor driver under Sections 281 ( ), 106(1) of the BNS and Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act, which pertains to dangerous driving, endangering life or public safety. Nandanvan police confirmed the case and stated that further investigation is underway to determine whether the tractor was structurally unsound or if the cement mixer was improperly secured. The tractor and the mixer have been seized for inspection.
