MILWAUKEE (AP) — Making his third major league start, Jacob Misiorowski threw five shutout innings and the Milwaukee Brewers earned a 4-2 victory against the Pittsburgh Pirates and Paul Skenes on Wednesday.
Misiorowski (3-0) allowed two hits, walked two and struck out eight and threw 74 pitches and lowered his ERA to 1.13 for the Brewers, who took two of three in the series and climbed a season-high nine games over .500.

Misiorowski, 23, entered the game having given up one hit and two runs in 11 innings over his first two outings since being promoted from Triple-A Nashville on June 12.
Skenes, also 23 and the reigning NL Rookie of the Year and a starter in the 2024 All-Star Game, allowed all four runs in the second inning. Skenes (4-7) gave up four hits with two walks and four strikeouts and threw 78 pitches for the Pirates.
The Brewers sent nine batters to the plate in the second inning. After loading the bases with no outs, Milwaukee scored its first run on Joey Ortiz's ground out dribbler to Skenes. Eric Haase followed with a bloop double to drive in another. The Brewers extended the lead when Sal Frelick grounded into a fielder's choice, while Christian Yelich capped the scoring with an RBI single.
Trevor Megill earned his 18th save for the Brewers.

Oneil Cruz, who was in the starting lineup for the Pirates after being removed from Tuesday night's game for failing to run out a double play grounder, reached on a two-base error in the seventh and scored on Tommy Pham's single. Spencer Horwitz's double scored the other run for the Pirates in the eighth.
Key moment
The Pirates threated in the fourth when Bryan Reynolds led off with a single for the first hit off Misiorowski and Horwitz followed with a walk. But Misiorowski got Nick Gonzales to ground into a double play and then struck out Cruz to end the inning.
Key stat

Rasmussen and the Rays bullpen shine in 3-0 win over Royals, extending their road win streak to 5

Associated Press KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Drew Rasmussen tossed five innings of two-hit ball, Tampa Bay scored three times in the second on an array of singles and bunts, and the Rays held on the rest of the way to beat the Kansas City Royals 3-0 on Wednesday night. Rasmussen (7-5) struck out five and walked two before turning it over to the Tampa Bay bullpen on a hot, humid night. Three relievers combined to allow one hit and one walk before Pete Fairbanks handled the ninth for his 14th save. The Rays (45-35) have won five straight on the road, nine of their last 12 overall and are a season-best 10 games over .500. Jose Caballero had an RBI bunt single and Danny Jansen laid down a sacrifice bunt against Michael Wacha during the decisive second for Tampa Bay. Christopher Morel, Josh Lowe and Chandler Simpson had singles in the inning. Other than that, Wacha (4-7) was tough on the Rays. He went six innings and struck out nine while walking just one. His biggest problem has been the Royals' biggest problem: They aren't scoring. Not only have they managed four runs total amid a four-game losing streak, they have given Wacha two runs of support or fewer in 13 of his 16 starts this season. Kansas City has lost nine straight at Kauffman Stadium since beating Detroit on May 31, its longest home skid since dropping 10 in a row in April and May 2023. The Royals also have lost 10 of their last 14 games overall. Key moment The Royals put runners on the corners in the fourth, but Salvador Perez popped out on his first pitch to end the threat. Key stat Kansas City has not hit a home run in its last 54 innings at Kauffman Stadium. Up next Rays RHP Shane Baz (7-3, 4.79 ERA) starts the series finale Thursday. RHP Michael Lorenzen (4-7, 4.81) starts for the Royals. ___ AP MLB: recommended

Fried becomes first 10-game winner as Domínguez and Grisham power Yankees to 7-1 victory over Reds

Associated Press CINCINNATI (AP) — Max Fried became this season's first 10-game winner, Jasson Dominguez and Trent Grisham had four hits apiece and the New York Yankees defeated the Cincinnati Reds 7-1 on Wednesday night to avoid being swept in the three-game interleague series. Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered for the Yankees (46-34), who remained one game in front of Tampa Bay in the AL East. Elly De La Cruz had two hits for the Reds. Fried (10-2) went seven innings and allowed an unearned run, four hits and seven strikeouts. The left-hander is the third Yankees pitcher since 1962 to be the first in the majors to reach double-digit victories, joining CC Sabathia in 2011 and Tommy John in 1979. Domínguez and Grisham each had two doubles. The four hits were a career high for Domínguez while it was the third time Grisham has had at least four hits in his seven-year career. Chisholm, ejected in the ninth inning of Tuesday night's 5-4 loss in 11 innings after arguing a strike call, bounced back with a two-run, third-inning drive off Brady Singer (7-6). Giancarlo Stanton led off the inning with a single and Chisholm sent Singer's slider 433 feet into the stands in right-center to make it 3-0. Four of Chisholm's 17 homers have come since he returned to the lineup on June 3 after missing 28 games due to a right oblique strain. Key moment The Yankees struggled with runners in scoring position throughout the series, but broke through in the second when Grisham lined an RBI single to right with the bases loaded. They were 4 for 22 on Wednesday and 5 for 43 for the series. Key stat Fried is 8-1 with a 0.93 ERA in 10 starts after a Yankees' loss. He has gone at least six innings in all those starts and didn't allow an earned run for the sixth time. Up next Yankees: Return home to host Oakland in a weekend series. RHP Will Warren (4-4, 4.66 ERA) gets the call on Friday. Reds: RHP Nick Martinez (4-8, 4.45 ERA) goes on Friday when San Diego comes in for three games. RHP Dylan Cease (3-6, 4.43) starts for the Padres. ___ AP MLB: recommended

Moms take centerstage at NBA draft as sons appreciate all the effort they've put in

NEW YORK (AP) — It was mother's day at the NBA draft Wednesday night. The moms of the NBA draftees took centerstage, receiving hugs and wiping away tears as they heard their offspring's names called. Kelly Flagg, whose son Cooper went first to the Dallas Mavericks, was a strong player in her own right. She starred for the University of Maine in the late 1990s. The 1998-99 team she was on made school history when it won the program's first NCAA Tournament game, upsetting Stanford. Asked what she helped instill in her son, Kelly Flagg said: 'I just hoped that he loved the game as much as we always have, and we're just thrilled that he did love it and he got to this moment. It's incredible.' As far as the last time they played one-on-one, mom said the outcome wasn't a victory by her son. 'It's not a loss. It was a timeout in a game. It's just been an extended timeout,' she said. Maria Harper also got the first hug from Dylan Harper after being taken at No. 2 by San Antonio. Appropriate because she coached his first AAU team and was an assistant on his high school team. She played Division I basketball herself with New Orleans between 1993 and 1996. 'She means the world to me, coaching me from first grade to senior year,' Dylan Harper said. 'For her to see this moment, probably means the world to her. I love my mom and everything I do is definitely for her.' Maria Harper echoed Kelly Flagg's sentiments. 'His flat-out love for the game, his determination, his humility and his hard work day in and day out,' she said. VJ Edgecombe's mom was wiping at tears when they talked to ESPN. 'Bimini to the world,' Bendra Rolle said after her son went No. 3 to Philadelphia and capped the family's journey from the Bahamas to the NBA. ___ AP NBA:
