Sunscreen is safe and effective — if you choose correctly
The anti-sunscreen movement, primarily housed on TikTok and social media, has labeled the summer staple as toxic for users. Last year, social media personalities spread misinformation that sunscreen causes cancer rather than prevents it.
However, experts maintain that sunscreen is a crucial part of preventing skin cancer, provided you apply the right type. Here's what to know.
Sunscreen is not inherently dangerous, but certain ingredients and chemicals could have adverse effects.
For example, ingredients oxybenzone and octinoxate are commonly used in chemical sunscreens but lack GRASE — 'generally recognized as safe and effective' — classification from the Food and Drug Administration.
The ingredients work to absorb and break down the sun's rays rather than shield or reflect them. The FDA recommends avoiding sunscreen that contains more than 5% of the ingredients, though there is no official warning against either.
While some chemicals may be questionable, foregoing your SPF could result in skin cancer — the most common kind in the United States. The American Academy of Dermatology estimates around 20% of the population will be diagnosed with the disease in their lifetime.
But what about that claim that sunscreen causes cancer? According to dermatologist Anisha Patel, M.D., there's no evidence for that correlation.
Instead, Patel said sunscreen protects your skin from harmful UV rays — if chosen carefully.
What SPF you slather on is all up to preference, though chemical and mineral sunscreens can offer different kinds of protection.
Known for its thicker texture and potential white cast, mineral sunscreens help reflect the sun from your skin and act as a shield, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
Compared to chemical formulas — which absorb sunlight and could contain those aforementioned ingredients — mineral sunscreen is easier on sensitive skin and provides immediate protection.
But mineral sunscreen isn't as effective at water-wicking as chemical compositions and may come off after some time in the pool or ocean.
Interested in mineral sunscreen? Keep an eye out for zinc oxide and titanium dioxide on the ingredients list. The pair is the only active sunscreen filter with GRASE status.
Whether you go chemical or mineral, dermatologists typically recommend finding a formula that provides both UVA and UVB radiation with an SPF of 30 or higher.

Americans' faith in food safety plummets
Over the past several months, the federal government has made extensive cuts to instrumental food health and safety organizations like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the Center for Disease Control. And now, Gallup polling released this week says American confidence in the government to ensure food safety is at a new low. Shocker. Only 53% of Americans say they have a 'great deal' or 'fair amount' of confidence in food safety. This number has been dropping since 2006, however, there was a sharp decline starting in 2019. Despite this, 84% of Americans still report that their diet is at least 'somewhat healthy,' a number that has stayed consistent since Gallup started this reporting in 2001, but there hasn't been much — if any — increase in how many people are paying attention to nutrition labels and food warnings. Something that has become increasingly necessary as new food recalls are being announced almost daily. The USDA and FDA release public notices when they become aware of a recall, however, some of these notices aren't released until weeks or months after a contamination was reported. These recalls aren't always the easiest to find, sometimes they're hiding in the FDA Enforcement Report, which is completely different from the Recall, Market Withdrawals, & Safety Alerts Data Base. For example, in this week's enforcement report there are six ongoing recalls from the same company (King Cheesecake Company Inc.) because various products included pecans that were potentially contaminated with salmonella. This is listed as a Class I recall, the most serious from the FDA. The recall was initiated on July 18, but not classified by the FDA until August 7. To make matters worse, there is no listed press release for the recall even though it affects products and consumers in six different states including Alabama, Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Illinois. Despite the cuts, officials have maintained that the number of inspectors and other food regulators will not change. Other experts are saying these cuts are a massive threat to public health and safety and could lead to dangerous disease outbreaks and consistent food recalls. Who's to say which is true, but it's clear the majority of Americans aren't confident in our food systems right now. All in the name of making America healthy again — apparently. Rocket Pharma's shares soar after US FDA lets gene therapy trial resume
The U.S. health regulator has allowed a study of Rocket Pharmaceuticals' gene therapy to resume, less than three months after halting it following a patient's death. The drugmaker's shares were up 21% in midday trading after soaring more than 30% earlier Wednesday morning. Rocket's mid-stage trial, testing its experimental therapy, RP-A501, for a genetic disorder called Danon disease, was halted in May by the Food and Drug Administration after a patient died from a rare complication. The company said on Wednesday that the FDA has lifted its clinical hold on the trial, to be resumed with a revised pre-treatment regime and a lower dose of the gene therapy. Rocket said it will discontinue prophylactic use of drugs that inhibit the C3 protein, which is part of the immune system, as part of the pre-treatment regime. The patient who died in the May trial was one of two who were administered the C3 inhibitors. The patient had suffered from capillary leak syndrome, which can cause organ failure. In the new trial, three patients, at least four weeks apart, are expected to receive a lower dose of its therapy. Rocket said the adjusted dose was proposed based on data from an early-stage study, which showed a better safety profile. Danon disease, which affects males more severely than females, causes heart muscle damage and progressive muscle weakness. Fewer than 1,000 people in the United States are currently known to have the condition, according to National Institutes of Health.
